From the first post:

SPOILER WARNING:

THIS IS THE MOTHER OF ALL FREAKING GAME OF THRONES SPOILER THREADS.

DON’T EVEN THINK OF PARTAKING IN THIS THREAD IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE LATEST BOOK IN THE SERIES.

Well I’ll leave the tags on my post, doesn’t hurt anything, and my apology also still stands, as it doesn’t hurt anything either.

That said, we’ve all (once again) been warned, so non-readers may want to participate in this thread instead.

THIS IS A SPOILERS THREAD, INCLUDING EVERYTHING LEAD UP TO THE LAST PAGE OF THE LAST BOOK AND ALL SPECULATIONS AFTERWARD.

And yes, the speculation as to why Cat’s death was not a graphic is a pretty good reason.

My point about the mom’s death is not that it didn’t follow the book exactly, it’s that it doesn’t jibe with her being driven mad by what she saw. One of Frey’s people in the book even says something like that, that she’d gone mad. Watching the scene on tv, her “aaaaaah!” and subsequent silence is consistent with someone, perfectly sane, simply overcome with grief. It just removes a bit of the horror of the scene imo. It’s still a good scene, I totally buy her desperation to save her son at any cost, it’s just not what I was hoping they’d do with it.

Oh, my bad. I generally assumed the Internet was meant to be spoiler free territory. This is pretty novel!

HAHAHAHAHA! You’re funny.

I agree with this as well. Was really hoping they would take some time to actually create Queenscrown and show the hidden path to it. But I noticed in this episode that Hodor isn’t carrying Bran anymore…just pulls him along in that cart so I guess that is one reason they omitted Queenscrown.

I’m also becoming concerned that my posts are becoming replies to YOUR posts and agreeing about the same things! I am my own person, dammit! :)

The way I expected it to go was that Walder would kill Robb’s wife, and then go “well, you’re not married now, are you.”

Obviously, I haven’t read the books and was completely blindsided by the massacre.

Arya is really surprised

lul wut.

As for the actual episode: The stomach stabbing was very very brutal. I didn’t even remember the mother having clawed out her eyes / gone mad from the book, but her death in the show was kind of awkward. Disappointed we didn’t get to see the wolf head thing as well as the dumping of the mother’s body. I’m guessing next episode will cover that to some degree.

Not at all surprised by the reactions of non-readers. Curious to see if people will actually stop watching the show or not.

So, speaking of Arya–her actually being a witness to all the murder at the Red Wedding is not in the books, right? Instead, she’s headed for the Hall and the Hound catches up with her and stops her from running into a suicidal situation, IIRC.

Some more reactions filmed by canny book readers!

I suspect that is all next week as well. I may be misremembering, but I think the wolf-head thing was conveyed second-hand in a conversation between Tyrion and Tywin rather than actually being “shown”… but I might be wrong.

In the books she sees the Stark troops being butchered under the tents outside the walls of the Twins. I don’t think she sees the wolf get killed, but Sandor does knock her out and cart her off.

I like how it was portrayed in the show slightly better than the book version. Seeing Robb’s direwolf get killed is much more powerful an final that “just” seeing the Stark army betrayed.

In the books Arya sees what is happening outside and is running towards the castle in hopes of reuniting with her family when she is hit in the head from behind and her chapter ends. Its one of those moments, especially given what just transpired with Robb and Catelyn, where you think “WTF?! Did Martin just kill off Arya too?! Son of a Bitch!!!”. Only later do we have another Arya chapter where it is revealed that the hound knocked her out and “rescued” her.

Frankly I was a little disappointed that the show didn’t play on this mystery at all. They simply showed the Hound knock her out and cart her off. Can you imagine the sweet sweet interent tears this week if non-reader viewers thought that there was a chance Arya had died at the Twins as well? On the other hand, “killing” Arya in addition to Robb, Talisa, Catelyn and Grey Wind (among others) probably would have had many viewers following through on their threats to stop watching.

After the Red Wedding I can say that I think Talisa in the series was much better handled than Jeyne in the books.

Why doesn’t George RR Martin use Twitter?

Because he killed all 140 characters.

Bravo.

I think the change in Boltons line as he finished off Robb from the book version which was “Jaime Lannister sends his regards” to “The Lannisters send their regards” made sense given that some viewers might have been confused that Jaime somehow knew about the Red Wedding plot. Especially given the last couple of episodes of making the viewer more sympathetic to Jaime.

Holy shit.

That is why I don’t come into the spoiler thread. Watching that episode without foreknowledge was just surreal, brilliantly punctuated by the empty silence during the credits.

That was such an amazing episode. I read the books so I knew what was coming and I was still affected by that scene - the actors and writers did really well. I liked seeing how Catelyn discovered the betrayl. The quizical look about the Rains song, then the concern, then the ‘click’ and the discovery of the chain mail and finally her decent. For me - she stole the whole scene.

I wasn’t sure if this season would have “all the weddings” and before this episode I was guessing they wouldn’t. Now - I am not so sure. That was very powerful and I could see viewers, not supported by book readers, having a hard time leaving another season off with so much bad stuff happening to ‘good people’. Ned was one thing but I think Robb et. al. was much more powerful in the show than the Ned event (in the books I found the opposite).
