Some extremely brief footage of Season 4 in the 2013 “Yearender”:

Includes Tyrion in chains, Joffrey at… something (I’m guessing his wedding), a nearly unrecognizable clean-shaven Jamie (with golden hand) thumbing through the Kingsuard book, Sansa, and something off in an arid desert (or for some reason I keep thinking that’s the Red Viper but it doesn’t feel right).

HBO announced that they have hired Neil Marshall to direct the climax episode of the next season.
He directed the “Blackwater” episode previously, so book readers may presume to know what happens in the episode he’ll direct.
April 6 is the premiere date.
Full trailer this Sunday, before True Detective.
So yeah, that 6th book needs to hurry the fuck up.
Yeah, and isn’t there supposed to be one after that?
Yeah. It’s called the 5th book.
— Alan
The fifth book was A Dance with Dragons, the 6th is supposed to have Winter in the title, and the 7th something about Spring, so I’m not sure what you mean, Alan.
I think its a forgone conclusion that they catch up to Martin before he even gets the 6th done let alone the 7th and they have to make their own ending.
Uh, me neither!
Season 4 trailer comes out this Sunday. They put up a bunch of short clips on Vine:

RED VIPER!
All of a sudden I’m hoping the fight choreographer watched Seirei no Moribito.

I worry more about Martin’s age and Santa Claus shape taking him from us before he finishes the last book. I don’t care how much of a detailed outline he’s got worked up, it’s just not going to be the same if someone else writes it.

It would be interesting to see how the other guy would do with it, though. Did Brandon Sanderson copy Jordan’s prose style when he took over Wheel of Time?
I think he tried to, with some limited success. But GRRM is a better writer than Jordan by several orders of magnitude, so while it would be easy to say a future imitator would only be required to throw out lots of “much and mores” I think GRRM’s prose, especially his dialogue, can really shine when he’s on. I never felt compelled to reread pages of anything by Jordan so as to enjoy the quality of the wordmanship-i-ness.

Yeah, that’s what would be so fascinating – if you’re trying to channel Martin, what has to be carried over? Obviously there are certain catchphrases, but there’s also the particular things that Martin pays attention to. The heraldry, food, and so on… wonder what else.
I forgot how serious/in jest the comment was, and Woolen Horde will probably correct me, but supposedly, Martin said that upon his death, his notes/research burn with him. So that someone else can’t attempt to finish A Song Of Ice & Fire in his place.
I got the sense Martin was pretty serious about not letting anyone take over the books.
I’m not sure I’ve heard that. A former co-worker of mine was college friends with Ty, GRRM’s assistant for the last handful of years, and he’s convinced that Ty and Daniel Abraham will finish the series if someone dies off too soon. Ty apparently knows how everything ends/resolves, more so than HBO’s two producers, at least insomuch as GRRM has worked out himself. My co-worker likes to boast that GRRM now recognizes him, he showed up at GRRM’s hotel room during Chicon last year and said GRRM was all, “hey, it’s Ty’s college buddy.”
It really hinges on his will. If his wife inherits all rights/properties, then it’s ultimately up to her and she’ll be under enormous pressure from fans and the publishers to allow the series to be finished. Whether she honors her husband’s final wishes or caves to the pressure depends on her personality.
Edit: Yes, I’ve suggested more than once that we have Ty to Dayton and get him drunk. Really, really drunk. :P
That makes sense. They’ve collaborated on a lot of stuff and from what I understand it was Abraham who revised and expanded on Hunter’s Run.

It was also Abraham’s idea to split books 4 and 5 geographically rather than chronologically.
This is more reassuring. I don’t even remember where I heard that. It just sounds hella funny/extreme to me. But the Ty and Daniel thing makes a whole lotta sense.
…which was definitely a controversial choice, as it left fans waiting years after the publication of AFfC to find out what happened to Dani and Tyrion after ASoS.
