Yeah, fans didn’t really know, had to just guess, but sometime before the 4th book was published Martin confirmed that he was still alive. . .but sort of wished he wasn’t.
Yeah I still wished the show had done the same. I think just going through all the Theon stuff is just a waste of time and mostly worthless stuff. Yeah he’s a tragic character, whatever. Just bring him back as a surprise just like in the book and be done with it. Unfortunately these character return reveals just aren’t executed well in the show, if at all (Barristan Selmy being another).

I think for the tv show the Boltons are about to go A list, as key characters. We, the tv audience, hadn’t really met them, didn’t know much about them. Recently we’ve seen a lot more of Roose and his son, prepping the audience. Now they can use Theon as the audience surrogate so we can sort of live with them. Theon is a character we’ve known from the beginning, so it makes sense to use him to make that transition.

I would imagine those sorts of reveals are quite a bit more difficult to do in the show. Besides, the Selmy reveal in the book is a little silly. How on earth would Jorah Mormont not have recognized one of the most famous knights in Westeros and Lord Commander of Robert’s Kingsguard? Because he had a beard? Come on!
BTW is it just me or was The Hound not mortally wounded in that fight?
Yeah, he wasn’t injured. No biggie; they just have a generic ambush somewhere later and he’ll take a wound. They really wanted to have that scene in the first episode.
No, I don’t think so.
Arya’s already told him what she is going to do to him some day. And unlike the books - I think that is exactly what she is going to do.
The Hound will not survive Season 4, imo. Arya is going to end up killing him. Between now and then we are simply going to find out why.
Nah I think he’s gonna get randomly injured down the road… episode 9 probably… but it’ll happen like in the book, and Arya will just leave him to die.

Maybe. But I don’t think they will leave the Hound’s fate in doubt or save him with an obscure death. That works in the books because GRRM doesn’t have to pay his actors when he parks them for two or three novels.
That is not an option in GoT. They have done it only once, with the actor who plays Ser Barristan. I do not think they will do it again.
So if he is going to go, he’s going to go. They thought it important to put Needle back in Arya’s hands much earlier and to ensure the Hound is not wounded in the tavern fight. Both those changes were for a reason.
What reason? We’ll find out, but I think this will be a real departure from the books.
I have to watch that Kimmel clip at least 3 times a day now.
Yeah I agree, the Theon stuff wasn’t so much about Theon as it was about introducing a key Bolton, to help make the Bolton flavour more present preparatory to the RW. Also, if the reveal about what happened to Winterfell had happened without that, people would have been “wha? who?”, since he’d only been mentioned briefly by Bolton as “my bastard” really early on.
They’re milking the Hound/Arya duo because it seems that putting Maisie together with any actor is fun (e.g. Tywin/Arya the other season). But in order to get rid of the Hound satisfactorily, I think they’ll still have him injured, but have Arya give him the coup de grace at a point where she quite likes him, so it will be painful for her to do so, but it will at the same time tick him off her list.
I like that idea. Arya ticking people off her list should at first be great for her in terms of morale. But at some point the enormity of what she’s doing should occur to her, and what better way than for her to have to off someone who was in her doghouse but earned his way out?

That could be very well executed. Have him stop being in her nightly list chant. At first she doesn’t realize she’s skipped him, then have it dawn on her (not sure how you communicate it to the audience). They bond, things go well, and bam, he gets injured due to some fight she starts with some people that he bails her out of (again).

Well weren’t we all waiting for that to happen?
