Thanks for the heads up!

I’ll add another point then:

  1. Shakespeare
  2. Succession
  3. Candle
  4. Mouse
  5. Wall
  6. Star

Stardust?

Indeed!

Ah obvious now that you said it. I should have thought of that one more

Your turn, @CraigM!

Also, but only if you want, @Cormac, you can explain those clues in some words (for example, like ArtVandelay did for Streets of Fire).

You mean @Gordon_Cameron surely.

Also the plot is siblings fighting for the crown as succession is handled by ‘whichever sibling is left alive after they murder each other’ which the gif I posted shows the bloody results of

Oh, my bad!

l haven’t seen Stardust, so l’m glad you explained the gif!

Ah, of course!

I really enjoyed Stardust and the joy and sense of fun that it brought. It just seems that we don’t have that much anymore. When they made it they apparently aimed for Princess Bride territory and I feel they definitely lived up to that classic.

When it came to selecting words, I didn’t want to be too obvious and go straight for the shooting star, as that was my first association. Since DeNiro and his Captain Shakespeare make quite an impression I decided to go with that and possibly use that as a minor obfuscation attempt. Especially with the royal family succession that seemed like a fitting theme and also a decent red herring in relation to the Shakespeare genre.

Then the more practical terms the babylon candle is a prominent mcguffin, so that was a relevant touchstone and similarly the Wall plays a big role in establishing the fantastical world. Even though the mouse doesn’t play a big factor in the film, I thought it might be helpful thread to set this apart from the earlier Shakespeare red herring (whereas my first idea of “witches”, wouldn’t have had the same effect).

Lastly the central conceit of the film is that Claire Danes is a star that has fallen to earth, so that was a very important clue and presumably help bring this across the finish line!

PS None of those things are particularly spoilery, so for everyone who hasn’t watched it, treat yourself to a fantastical adventure movie with Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Charlie Cox (now better known as Daredevil), Claire Danes, Henry Cavill, Sienna Miller, Mark Strong, Rupert Everet, Peter OToole, Ricky Gervais… And its based on a Neil Gaiman story.

PPS Personally I hate trailers since they are pretty much guaranteed to reveal way too much for my liking. For those that do not suffer such reservations heres a link:

Photo credit to a buddy of mine whose wife brewed up a batch, unless Gordon’s movie isn’t Speed, in which case never mind.

I confess I didn’t think it would be that easy!

  1. Dennis Hopper minus thumb
  2. Sandra Bullock is taking the bus because her license was suspended for … SPEEDING
  3. Bus jump
  4. Pram full of cans, not baby
  5. Cop retirement gold watch used as a bomb timer

Pop quiz, hotshot! Which movie contains these elements?

  1. camphor
  2. ear (as in corn)
  3. professor of archaeology
  4. unusual conveyance
  5. sandal(s)

My Neighbor Totoro!

That’s right, My Neighbor Totoro! The clue “a movie my two year old has seen over, like, a hundred times” might have been too obscure. So I’m glad you got it as is.

The camphor tree is a big-ass tree suitable for hosting giant furry forest spirits. The ear of corn is a little totem carried by one of the characters, determined that the vitamin-rich veggie can cure her ailing mother. The archeology prof probably shouldn’t leave his two young daughters alone as much as he does. But his wife is sick and he has a job to do, and a neighbor lady checks in as often as she can, so what else can he do? The unusual conveyance is a giant and sometimes invisible cat, similar to the Cheshire variety, except it is also public transit. Sandals are worn in warm weather and, when one is found in a pond, might lead a community to a terrifying conclusion.

You’re up, Gordon!

To this dad of a 5 year old it’s like a fantasy of some golden age of free range parenting.
