It all seems obvious once you know the answer, huh? Was I too obtuse? Is Heavy Metal really that obscure?
- an evil glow: The Loc-Nar!
- an unfinished den: Den of Earth (voiced by John Candy) is one of the segments.
- a terrified girl: The Loc-Nar scares the Starman’s daughter.
- a questionable angle: “I told you, Charlie… I got an angle!”
- a bad double-cross: The Girl tries to double-cross Harry Canyon (love that name), and loses.
- a flying fortress: The Loc-Nar possesses dead flyers in B-17
- a bladed tattoo: Starman’s daughter is proven to be the reincarnation of Taarna, possessing the bladed tattoo
- a starman lands: Tesla stole the opening sequence!
- an animated anthology: Heavy Metal is an animated anthology masterpiece from 1981.
Apparently not on this board, as it gets referenced a fair bit, but I hadn’t heard of it until pretty recently. I suspect it’s one of those things that is not obscure to people of an age to have seen it when it was released, but is to later generations.

Yeah I know it by reputation only, because it is older than I am. Like if I saw a still frame? I’d get it. But beyond the visual aesthetic I have nothing for it.
If you have the opportunity, seek it out. I watch it at least once a year. Maybe it’s just nostagia to me, but it’s one of my all-time favorite animated movies.
Anyways, looks like you’re up @JoshL !
No, I know it well. Just for some reason wasn’t thinking in that direction! I don’t usually think of cartoons with 5 Elements, for some reason.
Cute pun on ‘unfinished den’!
I caught it on video about 10 years after it was released. It had a certain cache among nerdy teen types. I never read the magazine in its glory days although I have perused it since. (A lot of issues are on archive.org.)

Correct! Sorry it was too easy. I figured maybe people hadn’t watched it in a long time. I re-watched it recently with my kids, they quite enjoyed it!
- Daddy’s in the bag: Janeane Garofalo’s father’s skull is embedded in a bowling ball (no, she didn’t do it. She had the guy at the pro shop do it), which she carries around in a bowling bag.
- Sandwich or danger: The Shoveler gives a rousing pep talk: Are we going to save the city? Or should I eat this sandwich?
- Singer turned weapons designer: The great Tom Waits designs (non-lethal!) weapons to outfit the team.
- Gangs (but not of New York): Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush!) brings together all the gangs of the city, and of course they all have themes: The Disco Boys, The Not-So-Goodie Mob, The Furriers, etc.
- A nightmare plot: Casanova’s evil scheme is to use his Psycho-frakulator to turn everybody’s worst nightmares real. Or something.
One thing I had definitely forgotten about this movie, there are some really excellent futuristic cityscapes. It’s all backround stuff, but really well done for a movie which, presumably, did not have a big budget.
@Ginger_Yellow up!
I really like the movie, and the two most memorable things are the bowling ball and the “World Changer” business card, so 1 and 3 definitely gave it away.

That is because you are a person of class and taste.
You may not think that after this:
- Future friend
- Moustachio
- No shows
- Japanese synthesiser
- Budget issues

Is this the Mario Bros movie?
No, but it’s not a million miles away from it.
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure?
