The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance?
Only going of the last clue…
Fair enough. If I overthought it really hard, I could also make some other clues fit (e.g. family/friends) but I’m not in the least surprised I was wrong!
Edit: is that a word, overthought? I meant: thinking something through way too far…
It’s not Stagecoach or Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or a literal John Wayne and John Ford movie.
Works for me, and it’s better than underthinking things, right?
Definitely! And good to know it is a workable word. English not being my first language (as demonstrated by the now fixed to instead of too), I know I sometimes run the risk of using words that might be way too literal translations of their Dutch equivalents…
The big-screen version of the TV show Maverick, with Richard Donner directing Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster? Screenplay by William Goldman? No. Jeez, I haven’t seen that or thought of it in nearly thirty years, is it worth a rewatch?
Dunno - it was a trifle, but it was a pleasant trfile
Sorry for the late answer, I was away for a few days.
The first option, clearly. But we never found a convincing explanation. However, since we have a Dutchman here, maybe he has one? (or completely disagree with me on that).
I have to admit I don’t know anything about progressive rock and metal. And I clearly don’t know much more in many artistic fields. Plus, I’m probably biased towards literature and painting, which is what I know the most. It’s just that overall, there seems to be something weird happening culturally there. That’s however a country that is quite good at art conservation and has good classical orchestras.
Right?! A movie by the acclaimed director of such classics as The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption and Death Race 3: Inferno!
@mjgreeny75, don’t hesitate to suggest us some other good Dutch movies! Spoorloos is pretty great!
The last Dutch movies that I remember making a splash over here were Black Book, Borgman, and of course New Kids Turbo.
I haven’t seen any of these. Which ones do you recommend?
I know I’m taking some liberties with the concept of “Dutch cinema”, but in recent years, I have seen some nice movies from Flanders (so in Flemish/Dutch): Rundskop (lit. “Bullhead”), Ex Drummer and De Helaasheid der Dingen (I’m not sure how to translate that one, but probably “The shittiness of things” or something similar). The latter is probably the most Belgian thing I’ve seen. The Belgians are great at making (dark) comedies.
I honestly cannot really recommend any of those, Black Book is solid by the numbers film making on Hollywood level but did not stand out, and New Kids Turbo is sort of a Dutch Trailer Park Boys in movie form.
Borgman is the best of the bunch, but I left a bit disappointed after having high hopes after seeing the trailer and being really intrigued. Not a bad film by any means, but it did not reach the heights of my probably too lofty expectations.
Thanks! I will try to get my hands on Borgman then. Of the three movies I mentioned, Rundskop is probably the better - the main character is played by Matthias Schoenaerts, that guy from Audiard’s Rust and Bone/De Rouille et d’Os. De Helaasheid der Dingen was pretty funny (but the Flemish accent alone is enough to make me laugh).
Well,to be honest I’m not a big fan of Dutch movies myself. I find the acting under par compared to other (hollywood) movies, and listening to my own language doesn’t really improve things for me. I suppose Turks Fruit was one of the better ones, especially considering when it was made. And I quite liked New Kids Turbo, in all its absurdity. Spoorloos was also nice (a lot better than the American remake that actually had a happy ending I think?). But I do not think I have ever watched a Dutch movie in the cinema, and that is not likely to change anytime soon.
Music is a different story. Lots of world class dj’s over here (Tiesto, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, just to name a few), I like most of what Within Temptation and Floor Jansen (Nightwish) made and I’m a huge fan of Ayreon.
And of course we have the best painters! Although had is more accurate…
I have no idea, so I’m going to say Rush, as I can kinda sorta get it to fit some of the clues if I squint.
Yes, Turkish Delight/Turks Fruit has to be the most famous Dutch movie. Don’t spoil the original Spoorloos though! Yes, the American remake has a happy ending - to my knowledge, the only American remake that doesn’t have one is Funny Games.
True that, although just after Italy! I was only talking about more recent history. My point was that for a country with historically such an impressive culture, recent times have been quite poor culturally, which puzzles me a lot.
