I don’t think there are concrete rules and I’m not an arbiter, but I’d declare defeat if no one has any guesses after a fat obvious tenth clue.
For the record, it’s not The Professional or Godzilla or some of the other guesses, right?

Oh, my stupid guess is The Depahted, which features President Bartlet dying unexpectedly. But the other clues don’t fit as well to me.

Uh… Godzilla? Sorry - “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”?

Gonna swing twice…I dunno about #6 or #7… but Get Out certainly fits #9 and several others :)
Uh… I haven’t seen it so just going off #10 cause of the casting… The Irishman?
Well, I have tried Godzilla, so I may as well throw King Kong.
“A ‘Piano’ player tries and fails for another Oscar” is Tom Hanks right? And his character in Saving Private Ryan is a former schoolteacher, did Hanks get an Oscar for that one? And maybe one of the guys who die in SPR was in The West Wing?
It might work.
I couldn’t even figure it out by IMDBing the resumes of the Oscar-winners in The Piano, so I’m stumped. But I’ll guess Raising Arizona because I’m pretty sure there’s extravagant weeping in that.
Good try, but on the wrong track, sorry.
Hmm, so maybe clue 10 refers to The Piano, in which case the player might be Holly Hunter, Sam Neill, Anna Paquin, or Harvey Keitel. Holly won an Oscar there
Or maybe it’s The Pianist, in which case the player would be Adrien Brody and a bunch of other people who didn’t mind working with Roman Polanski. Adrien won an Oscar.
But still, I can’t make those clues jam together. Therefore… The French Dispatch?
I’m going to riff again on the West Wing clue and go with… The Lost World: Jurassic Park. I’m betting someone from that show got eaten on it :).
Sorry, you guys are way off. I’ll admit defeat soon.
I came up with Tom Hanks because the scare quotes on ‘piano’ made me think it’s not an actual piano. So, any other movies where an Oscar winner plays something that resembles but is not quite a piano?
I’m also trying to connect Piano to Jeffrey Tambor, but I may have Arrested Development on the brain.
Ray? Maybe he plays a keyboard at one point.
So we have a modern-ish era movie (City Bus), that was filmed in the last 25 years or so, has a West Wing cast member, and features on-screen violence (tourniquet, said cast member dies horribly). Assuming #10 isn’t sarcastic, then it may have a whiff of prestige film around it.
“Gordon is going for another movie that featured Matthew Broderick as a teacher” was noted as “getting warmer”
So uh… The Stepford Wives? That has Broderick, right? And people who died horribly?
I’ll end the agony. It’s Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘Margaret.’
(Moderate spoilers follow, but it’s not a super plot-driven movie anyway)
- King Lear - They are reading Lear in Lisa’s (Anna Paquin) high school English class
- Tourniquet - Two men try to save a terribly injured woman with a tourniquet.
- Cowboy hat - Lisa distracts a bus driver (Mark Ruffalo) because he is wearing a cowboy hat and she wants to know where he got it.
- Operatic weeping - While attending the opera with her mother, Lisa suddenly bursts into tears.
- Damages - A subplot involves lawyer discussions to sue the transit company.
- Leon in love - Jean Reno plays a Latin American businessman who romances Lisa’s mom.
- A Flickless schoolteacher - Matthew Broderick is one of the two famous actors playing schoolteachers. (Matt Damon is the other.)
- City bus - Runs over…
- West Wing alum dies horribly …Allison Janney
- A ‘Piano’ player tries and fails for another Oscar - Paquin (who won Best Supporting Actress for the Piano) gave a big, ‘best actress’-caliber performance, but was not rewarded this time around. Perhaps momentum was blunted by the six years the movie spent in post-production/litigation hell.
Don’t think I’ve even heard of it. Any good?
