Never seen… so apologies if its a terrible guess from clue 6 alone… 8 Mile?
No, it is not 8 Mile (which is surprisingly not bad at all by the way, even for people like me who don’t like rap music). We’re looking for a younger, probably less talented rapper here.
That rapper clue is really throwing me off. Virgin Suicides had some loud music and probably some braces, but that was a debut film and short on rappers. Was thinking something by Kaufman or Gondry might fit the bill and Be Kind Rewind even has Mos Def in it, but he wasn’t super young then and is also pretty talented.
I think Buckaroo is posting Jaden Smith movies again. I’ll guess Be Kind, Rewind however.
No, it is not Be Kind Rewind. Also, no thanks; l had to google Jaden Smith, whom l didn’t know, and l am now very confused by what l just saw. l already didn’t have much love for Will Smith, if not a downright aversion. This won’t help.
l remember now that l had actually heard about that movie. Shyamalam, Smith and Mini Smith, what a combo! lt’s also based on an original idea by Will Smith and produced by him and his wife. That’s an altogether new level of vanity project right here.
Also, l couldn’t resist listening to the podcast, and now l’d be almost tempted to watch it to appreciate the afteropsis even more.
A new clue :
- Braces
- Many actors coming back from the director previous movie
- Loud music
- Drawing on the film (l dunno if i am clear here; think of something like the triangle Mia draws in Pulp Fiction for example)
- A bit of Schnitzler
- Young rapper
and now:
- Estranged daughter and estranged son
Nobody? it’s an easy one!

Well - its sure as hell not The Shootist with John Wayne, LOL. That’s the only movie I can think of where a literally dying man plays a dying man.
Nope, but the actor we’re looking for and the Duke shared a passion for the booze.

I’m curious how you can fit “Young Rapper” into a famously old actor movie ;)
Nope, we’re not looking for Henry Fonda, but you’re getting close!
Fortunately enough, they don’t share a scene! Also, l voluntarily left it a little bit ambiguous, but the clue could also well have been ‘Kid rapping’.

I’m not sure if Schnitzler refers to a medical condition, food, or writer, but I think it’s Magnolia.
Yes! lt is Magnolia. The 10th clue would have been ‘frog rain’, but I’m happy l didn’t have to use such a giveaway clue!
Schnitzler referred to the writer, as the structure of the movie, where all the characters are linked together, reminds me a lot of Schnitzler work.
As for the other clues:
-
Braces : Quiz Kid Donnie dreams of being able to afford braces, believing he will thus land the bartender he’s in love with.
-
Many actors coming back from the director previous movie: many, many actors came back from Boogie Nights: l probably forget some, but l can think at least of Luis Guzman, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Philip Baker Hall, Melora Walters, Thomas Jane, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ricky Jay, Alfred Molina, William H. Macy.
-
Loud music: Aimee Mann’s Momentum, listened very loudly by Melora Walters
-
Drawing on the film : in the movie’s introduction, an drawn arrow to indicate the fall of Sydney Berringer from a building.
-
Young rapper : this lil fella :
-
Estranged daughter and estranged son: both Melora Walters and Tom Cruise
-
A great actor, who had one of his most important roles in a film appearing in this game very recently, had his last role in the movie we’re looking for, where he appropriately plays a dying man: Jason Robards, who plays Cheyenne in Once upon a time in the West, is a dying Earl Partridge in Magnolia.
Well done @Djscman!

I should rewatch it, it’s been a while. P.T. Anderson used to be one of my favorite directors. Now, though I certainly respect his filmography, when I think of him I think of “Mr. Maya Rudolph”. There was also a throwaway line in a recent Fiona Apple New Yorker feature where she reluctantly mentioned her ex that might make me think that at some point I had been watching too much of a good thing.
She had quit cocaine years earlier, after spending “one excruciating night” at Quentin Tarantino’s house, listening to him and Anderson brag. “Every addict should just get locked in a private movie theatre with Q.T. and P.T.A. on coke, and they’ll never want to do it again,” she joked.
Though I would like to hear a recording of that? Anyway, Magnolia. Probably too long, but filled with great characters.
Here’s the next movie.
- A future Indian does two magic tricks
- An immigrant to New York gets the job done
- When it came to finding out a director, a writer, an editor, an actor, and a producer for this movie, it was a pretty easy sale for each one.
- One of the character actors in this has been in just about everything, including very tiny roles in Hudsucker Proxy and New Jack City, where the plots would have been hopelessly derailed without his input.

Well I know what actor #4 has to be as a Huge Hudsucker Proxy fan :)
Question is which of the zillion movies he’s been in… so just gonna blurt out the first one that comes to mind…
The Muppet Movie?

Huh, I wonder which actor you’re thinking of. This one isn’t the Muppet Movie. And the guy I’m thinking of was in “The Muppets” movie but not “The Muppet Movie”, if that helps.
Edit: Oh, I bet you’re thinking of Charles Durning!

Uh… crap. I did mean “The Muppets” - wrote the wrong Muppets movie name ;)
I would describe this actors role in Hudsucker Proxy as… timely.

Yeah, he was in the right place at the right time.
