I’ve never seen any of those either. And it’s not any of them.

Next clue:

  • Autobiographical elements to the story
  • Blood in the water
  • Missing charts
  • Car accident
  • A chance meeting in a club ultimately leads to the climax
  • Musical chairs
  • Practice, practice, practice

Shine? Oh, wait, it’s the other musical student under pressure has a breakdown movie, isn’t it?

Or La La Land?

Not Shine. Or La La Land.

But both really good guesses.

Whiplash? Which I’ve never seen?

That was the one I was referring to in my post-guess regret.

It is Whiplash! A great movie that I recommend.

Good job, @JoshL. You’re up!

Autobiographical elements to the story
The director / screenwriter is a drummer and has stated that the story has a basis in a real life jazz band that he played in.

.
.

Blood in the water
The main character practices until his hands bleed. He dumps them in ice water to dull the pain.

.
.

Missing charts
The band leader refers to the band’s music score as “charts.” A key plot point in the film is when they go missing.

.
.

Car accident
Another key plot point.

.
.

A chance meeting in a club ultimately leads to the climax
This great scene in the jazz club.

.
.

Musical chairs
A lot of the early plot of the movie is based upon which chair the performers are in. “First chair” being top performer of course. As opposed to just being the guy who turns the pages of the music.

Practice, practice, practice
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. The final scene in the movie takes place at Carnegie Hall. The clue also works as probably 90% of the movie is Miles Teller practicing his drumming.

Foiled by my trigger happy typing fingers!

I give @Ginger_Yellow the assist. I know what movie I’m gonna do, just gotta come up with the clues.

  1. Jack Nicholson isn’t in this movie, except perhaps in spirit.
  2. The main character is an odd one out, nomenclature-wise
  3. Big Fun
  4. I think this movie is charming, but you can’t deny it is charmed. Well, at least one-third charmed.
  5. Eskimo

Oh! Great movie, and great clues too! l highly recommend it too. Truly impressive for a first film. l don’t know Damien Chazelle, but l happen to know his father, who is a nice fellah and also a music enthusiast, and l actually went to see Whiplash without knowing who the director was. Watched it twice, and want to watch it again!

@JoshL, do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as you can!

Heathers?

Correct! Guess my clues were too easy!

Jack Nicholson isn’t in this movie, except perhaps in spirit.: Christian Slater does a passable Jack impersonation for his “J.D.” character.

The main character is an odd one out, nomenclature-wise: Winona Ryder is in a clique called “The Heathers”, but she’s the only one not named Heather – she’s a Veronica.

Big Fun: The name of the fictional band which performs the fictional song “Teenage Suicide – Don’t Do It”

I think this movie is charming, but you can’t deny it is charmed. Well, at least one-third charmed.: An early role for Shannen Doherty, later to star in the TV show Charmed, along with two other young actresses.

Eskimo: In Veronica’s nightmare of Heather’s funeral, the priest remarks on Heather’s highlighted copy of Moby Dick, in which she has highlighted the single word, “ESKIMO”.

This movie came to mind because somebody in some other thread (or maybe it wasn’t even on here), used the abbreviation “BQ” for something, and that made me remember the scene where the Heathers send Veronica into a convenience store for corn nuts, and as she’s walking in, she yells out “Plain or BQ?” and a Heather yells back, “BQ!” in a tone of voice to indicate that Veronica is stupid for having to ask. It’s weird the things that stick in your head.

Good work, @Djscman! Back to you!

I got the Christian Slater and Shannon Doherty clues, and then it was a mining expedition to the deeper strata of memory from there. Man, there was a time when Slater was one of my favorite actors. I got to spend my 14th birthday watching Kuffs and was tickled pink to see his cameo in Star Trek VI. Besides a recurring voice role on Archer, has he been doing much in the last few decades?

I’ll have another movie up in the next hours.

Well, he was in Alone in the Dark! Ok, that was 15 years ago. More recently, he had a major role in Mr. Robot.

He’s pretty amazing in Mr. Robot, which you absolutely MUST watch if you haven’t.

Last time l saw him in anything, he was playing the main character’s father (!) in Nymphomaniac, which was probably worse than Alone in the Dark (and worse than everything you’ve ever seen)

Wow, I didn’t get any of those clues, and I love Heathers. I can at least get the first two in retrospect.

I thought about putting Eskimo in quotes… “Eskimo” or “Eskimo!”, would that have helped??
