So I want to play my shiny new (used) Gamecube games on my shiny new (new) Wii. I’ve heard that the Nintendo Wavebird controllers are really good. However, are they really $10 better than the Madcatz or Gamestop branded wireless Gamecube controllers? Has anyone tried both?
IMHO, the only company that makes wireless controllers on a par with first-party stuff is Logitech. They don’t make a GC controller, though.
If price is a big factor, look at Gamestop/EB for a used Wavebird. I think they go for ~$18.
good luck, I checked about 3 of them and they said they haven’t seen any come in for a while.
Amazon had a decent price for the wavebirds and free shipping. Ebay’s used wavebirds were a little cheaper, but you don’t know what you’re getting necessarily.
Some of the other 3rd party ones (like the wireless EB game name brand ones) looked to be of a “smaller” variety. Too small for the hands of an adult if you ask me.
The Wavebird is so good, you’d be crazy to go with anything else. It’s worth the extra money.
Basically $26 shipped. I just got this from amazon. It works great with the wii. The only thing I wish it had was rumble. Uses 2XAA batteries so I can use my rechargeable batteries. Seems to work with some of the virtual console games.
I noticed that one virtual console game required it. 5 man Bommerman.
I saw them at EB the other day for $24.99. Never been a better time to buy.
Yes, they are.
I hope Nintendo makes an effort to keep Wavebirds and GC memory cards in production in light of their ongoing usefulness.
Yeah, since the Wii-mote and nunchuck are wireless, it makes a lot of sense to have your gamecube controller(s) wireless as well.
The Wavebird is really good.
I picked up 2 wavebirds, a few GC games and a GC memory card today, all used at gamestop. I never owned a cube so it’s cool to suddenly have access to a huge library of games that I always wanted to check out. I love my Wii.
Wavebird is totally awesome.

… huge… library?
I got a GC last month and have the following: Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. All are fine games, but when I look at the used game racks I see… nothing else. Except maybe Blue Storm (I loved 64).
The GC was a neat little system but it’s not hard to see why it finished last gen in 3rd place.
Rogue Squadron’s
RE4
Mario kart
Paper Mario 2
There are more then a few other really great games for the GC.
Am I gonna have to post the damn list again? I’m not going to bother. Search my post history if you really want recommendations. It couldn’t have been more than a month ago.
Bottom line is if you think the Gamecube library was small or lacking in quality games, you’re wrong. You’ve been on the Internet too long. Take a break. Watch some Fox News and learn how not to believe everything you hear.
Yeah, I agree with BJB. Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Chibi-Robo, Fire Emblem… just to name a few.
Point taken. I guess it’s a matter of perspective. I bought a Wii, and it rocks, but frankly there are like…maybe 5-6 games that I’m into that are out right now, 4 of which I already own. Then I wandered into the used gamecube section of gamestop and saw at least 30 titles there that I was interested in buying, and limited myself to 4. So by huge, I don’t mean the massive amount of PS1+2 games the PS2 could play. I mean suddenly my eyes were opened to a ton of games that I wanted to play but never got around to since I never picked up a gamecube. I had never really thought much of the Wii being able to play GC games, and once I took a look at how much was out there that I was actually interested in playing, I was pretty impressed.
