Oh, I can’t wait for the rise of a parallel “conservative” gaming press.

I think some of it is “do-gooder derogation.” When someone in your proximity seizes the moral highground, it can be perceived as competition. The backlash against the “morally motivated minority” is thus an extension of the perceived conflict and an attempt to regain social position. Here’s an explanation of the effect at work in meat-eaters’ perceptions of vegetarians.

Yeah, I think this is totally right on. Leigh Alexander wrote something in TIME Magazine to this effect (and FWIW I think it’s a much stronger piece than her Gamasutra article about the end of gamers or whatever): time.com/3274247/video-game-culture-war/

#DescribeAGamerIn4Words came from the SJW devs and journo community. Check out the tweets from August rather than the last few days, where the #NotYourShield folks are using it.
#NotYourShieldis the latest from the anti-SJW community (probably originating on 4chan, but now adopted by many more) incidentally I’ve been using my sweet, sweet non-white privilege on that particular tag.
A dev on another forum (needs a login and I respect his privacy) has talked about doxxing, real life threats etc against developers… from the SJW community. Publicly supporting a world where male orientated games exist is taboo and many devs are afraid to stick their heads above the parapet to admit their focus isn’t gender politics and changing the world. Of course, EA and the big guys arent for a second stopping development of AAA titles full of tropes but outside the office, on twitter/forums etc you will be crucified if you don’t tow the party line.
It’s not just a handful of female devs/journos getting unwarranted and unacceptable abuse from MRAs in the gaming community, the social justice types are just as bad.

This is a great video. It would convince me If I where a alien that just landed in the planet. I mean, come on, these images of hipesexialized womens are like a matter of everyday everything everywhere.
I still don’t reject everything he say. Is a interesting opinion, but I think is flawed because what is tryiing to fight is hilariously contrary to massive amounts of evidence.
Maddox’s book had me in fits of laughter when I first read it.
The link should be Qt3>Amazon friendly btw, let me know if it isnt

You cite a single anonymous developer who made an unsubstantiated claim that the “social justice types” have sent him physical threats, and from that you make the statement that “social justice types” are just as bad as the massive MRA harassment campaign against Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian?
Seriously?
This kind of argument could be railed against so much of the internet really, it’s can be hard to distinguish between someone with 10 followers (not meant in a twitter way) and someone with 10000, therefore all views can be treated as serious and widely held. A small clique of independent game devs and freelance journalists become a dangerous and restrictive force, a tiny anonymous forum becomes a misogynistic crusade, a tweet by an idiot becomes a representation of a community (that doesn’t really exist).
Probably the most encouraging thing that happened during the last few weeks was PAX. A huge convention that featured panels by the likes of Mike Krahulik and Zoe Quinn, yet added no drama to this situation, as far as I’m aware. I find some solace in that.
Yeah, there are no good sides here, as there are lots of jackasses being vile on all sides, but obviously the people threatening violence or hacking and otherwise breaking the law are a special kind of moron who everyone should condemn and distance themselves from.
I also think that this article, linked to earlier, still summarizes a key perspective that the SJW-types would like to wish away, since it’s much easier to just dismiss everyone as racist and misogynist instead of just recognizing that a significant portion of their potential audience finds them smug, sanctimonious and moronic. http://www.examiner.com/article/the-gaming-community-is-not-a-wretched-hive-of-sexism-and-misogyny
The best part about PAX is seeing the diverse audience. Tons of girls, old guys, kids with handhelds, etc. Some of the presentations are still slathered in old-school hardcore gamerbro marketing “CANIGETAHELLSYEAH!? XBOX ONE, CALL OF DUTY, AND MOUNTAIN DEW! WOOOOOOO!” but it’s great to see the PAX-goers are made up of people from all walks of life.

edit: Made a point this upon closer inspection was wrong.
Yup. Go check out the Gamergate threads in the usual forums who’ve been around since Qt3. You really believe the side that’s full of professionals experienced in media manipulation and have an agenda are completely innocent in this? I’d rather have a bunch of neckbeards hurling abuse at me on twitter than a self righteous SJW contacting my boss saying I’m the next RapeHitler because I like to rescue strippers and fight sexy ninjas in my games.

I was curious and so I read this article and it’s dreadful, lying, cliched garbage that takes a bunch of paragraphs to say “I don’t care what you think, please shut up so as not to disrupt the status quo, which I personally don’t find offensive.” You’re right - that’s a perspective that people who are trying to disrupt the status quo because they find it offensive would definitely want to wish away.
There’s plenty of interesting articles about this brouhaha. There is nothing valuable or interesting in that linked article. Please don’t get suckered into wasting your time reading it (like I did).

I don’t understand the first sentence… are you saying go to octupus overlords and see what the developers who post in there are saying?

When do I get my check? The pay in this conspiracy sucks.
I shouldnt have even said that, its too close to doxing to be honest. You don’t have to believe me, but both sides are being complete dicks over this. The dev is a moderate leaning towards journos and devs, and not subject to any attacks… just reporting stuff from the community.

So, wait, the anonymous developer you cited who made the unsubstantiated claim that they had a physical threat leveled against them by a social justice type actually never had a physical threat made against them by a social justice type?
BUT there is a secret organization that has loads of evidence that shows social justice types threatening violence, but you’ve said too much?

I don’t know who or what Brietbart is but the first two sentences are what many of us feel did happen. I’ve read game ‘reviews’ where the author didn’t even mention the genre of the game he or she was reviewing and instead went for the philosophical/sociological angle that I, as someone who primarily plays games for the gameplay, don’t really care about. Where’s my information on the supported resolutions? Aspect ratio issues? FPS locks? Being able to rebind keys? Stutters? Physics being tied to fps instead of delta time? Length? Replayability? Overall performance? FOV locks? Mouse acceleration? Gamepad support? The list goes on. I used to be able to find this information in the printed pc magazines back in the early 90s and at the turn of the millennium but today, apart from TB and a few other youtubers, I don’t know of anyone in the gaming journalism who focuses on the technical aspect of games in their videos or articles.
So please, mention that women are being objectified in the game you’re reviewing if you feel that’s the case, but can we, for the love of god, get some actual fucking information that’s relevant to the product that we’re buying to go along with it? Preferrably have the article split into sections so I can skip to the parts I’m actually interested in.
