Games journalism 2019 - Everything is streaming

Yeah that sounded like it was a bad idea.

E: On reading it, the article is also a trash bare-bones attempt at MST3King some badly done animated rule34.

If the market didnt exist for tabloid-esque trash clickbait then companies like Kotaku wouldn’t be rushing to fill it.

Is that supposed to be a defense of Kotaku?

To be fair, there’s probably an interesting article to be mined from interviewing the people who make Overwatch porn (which is, as I understand it, the most popular genre of videogame-based porn). That’s not what Kotaku was trying to do, but it’s a phenomenon that’s more popular than it is talked about.

Just as much an attack on someone who see’s a trash clickbait headline and clicks it. It takes two to tango in the sorry world of trashy clickjunk.

The thread about this over on ResetEra is savage. I loved reading through it, talk about popcorn.gif.

ResetEra looked interesting and i went to register and it wont accept normal email addresses. I havent had an ISP email account since my modem days. Oh well.

I imagine you do have an ISP email address, assuming you have an ISP. They always come with one? You might need to get it set up is all, probably just a support call.

That’s not the case anymore , at least here in Europe.

Basically since Gmail became the standard for regular users.

Maybe Gmail is fine. I used my yahoo forum/gaming/secondary email. Will try again later

I don’t think Gmail works there. They do it because of people using free e-mail addresses to slip past their bans. It’s been a thing since way back on GAF like fifteen years ago. Maybe use a work e-mail if you have one? They don’t spam you or anything.

Heh. My ISP is google. Of course, my ISP’s email address is a gmail address. Same at work, we have google fiber there as well.

(Edit: And my wireless provider is also Google… ha! I didn’t realize before today how tied in I was to Google).

LOL well, maybe they accept gmail. However, iirc when I tried to register there (right after the GAF blow up that led me to look at the new site) it didn’t take my gmail account. It’s an unfortunate requirement, but it helps keep spam bots out and it’s better than requiring some sort of nominal activation fee. /shrug

I think most wireless companies provide an email-address that can be used to send text messages. This would have the domain of your wireless provider, so might work?

Any confirmation email might be split into like 50 SMS messages though.

No doubt will be a free email address that’s not on their blacklist. We have security policies at work forbidding use of work email for signups.

Boom.

For this story, I wish we’d taken that more rigorous approach. From the comments under the article, it’s clear that’s what many of you said you expected. For example, what does it mean that these parody videos about these particular franchises, many of which feature teenage characters and whose source material is geared towards young audiences, are so popular on websites like PornHub, some with more than 700,000 views? How do the creators and industry around them operate? Is there a moral debate around them, as there often is in fanfiction and fanart communities for any franchise that features younger characters? And so on. We needed more of that level of scrutiny and nuance far more than we needed any explicit screenshots. Those images of fictional characters from Harry Potter and the other series having sex were not just shocking but repulsive to readers. The text of the article begged for a different framing than what people clicking on it got. That’s ultimately on us as editors to have ensured. We did not. Our editorial team is resolved that this will not happen again.

No time to read the article. Hope they’re apologizing for removing the screenshots.

Ummm…

lol you REALLY want to read the thread. Just a helpful hint.

I like Stephen and respect him. But considering this is still a story on Kotaku with images Kotaku made, stored on their servers I rather think his holier than thou attitude to fictional sex is on shaky ground.
