I don’t think there was a tie…one contestant was clearly there first. He might have come off the bag later, but that’s not going to matter.

I don’t remember the etiquette on how we talk about the show itself in the spoiler-free thread, so I’m spoiler tagging this, but it’s just in case you aren’t up to date on the show. Nothing to do with the books, haven’t read 'em:

"

Was the Mountain dead at the end? I mean, I assume this was considered a loss for Tyrion either way, the Mountain very clearly kills Oberyn before he himself does or doesn’t die, but I wasn’t sure if, after accomplishing that and rolling back over onto his back, we were supposed to think he also died, or was just exhausted and injured.

Looked to me like the second thing you wrote there.

I mean, it was a wound that pierced through center mass. I’m calling shenanigans that he lived long enough to do what he did.

As for thread etiquette, anything that has happened in the show is free game. the no spoilers is for things that happen in the book that haven’t happened yet on screen. At least thats how I have come to understand it while following the thread.

I wonder if Tom’s caught up yet…

Poison is a woman’s weapon. The Hound said so.

Having read the books, I know what happens after the fight.

I have only ever watched the Fight and have never watched anything else.

I like books better.

I wanted to see this fight. I liked how it was done.

This is pretty cool, how the Iron Throne looked more or less in GRRM’s imagination.

Okay. That’s awesome.

What’s up hour long battle? I was not expecting that. I wonder what is going to happen with Jon now. I think this is the first time ever that I have guessed every character’s story arc wrong. “Oh this show is going to be about how Ned rights all the wrong in the world…oh nevermind” “Khal Drogo is going to wreck some Westeros shit pretty soon…oh nevermind” “So I guess Arya is going to pair up with that blacksmith guy and run some shit…oh nevermind” “Aha! Now Robb is going to wreck some shit now that the Twins are back under his control…oh nevermind”

Every time I think the show is going to zig it zags.

Pretty cool episode. They did a fairly good job of stretching that TV budget. A bit dark, and a bit too much reliance on the usual movie courtyard battle where people are in mixed, sword-clangy clumps rather than using coordinated assaults and defenses (see several episodes of Vikings for comparison).

But, whatever. Giants on mammoths? How flippin’ metal is that?

Glad they didn’t kill off Sam (knock on wood).

Agreed. From skimming the spoiler thread and even other sources who swore they weren’t spoiling anything (“it’s in the episode description!” or whatever) I already knew the whole episode was going to be this big fight, but I wasn’t let down. That long shot around the courtyard was impressive, and I think they did a pretty great job in any case, even more so considering the budget limitations.

“Okay, we’re going to need you recruits to install a 2 ton anchor in the side of an ice wall.”

  • Last words I would’ve heard as a new member of the Night Watch.

don’t worry about getting the anchor up there, good old Olly is working the crank.

Almost as bad as having to be the guy to lean over the side of the wall on a rope and shoot people.

It could be worse, you could be shot by a giant’s arrow.

Still, when you think about it - what a way to go.

From a tactical perspective it is nonsensical for the Knight’s Watch to have a forest and tree line so close to the wall they are defending.

I suspect the forest was there to use as a setting device to “hide” the remaining 999,900 warriors who are supposedly part of the battlefield.

Also, why would the Wildlings set the forest on fire as their initial attack move? The forest fire blocks their main line to the wall and also limits retreat capabilities. Not to mention announces their presence. Silly.

The forest line is supposed to be clear cut very far from the wall because of that very purpose. However, with the decline of the Night’s Watch, such activities were substantially reduced. (And the height and perspective just make it seem like it’s closer than it should be.)
