Lamentably, no - ever since my portable hard drive got fat folded into oblivion I’ve been using Orb from my home machine, and Orb doesn’t seem to like it too much when I jump around a lot, and it’s sort of like trying to follow a lecture on quantum physics while you’re slipping in and out of a coma.

And, really, for me it’s less about absolute length and more about not wanting to reach through the internet and slap the dudes wagging their face holes on the other end of the line. Most drunk people just annoy the living shit out of me, which was my problem with the latest 4 Guys, and was really disappointing because before Ryan got loaded they were clicking along just fine. I don’t mind topic derails as long as they’re entertaining (my favorite gaming podcasts ever are GFW and Idle Thumbs - I think it’s required that I enjoy that sort of thing).

Yes, drunk people are not entertaining unless you are also drunk. FFS, I don’t want to listen to drunk people slurring their way through some aimless conversation. My time is worth more than that.

On the latest 4G1Up I felt like I listened to an hour of talk about games I’ve never heard of and quite honestly don’t care that much about. Just as they started talking about Darksiders and other things I wanted to hear, I had to bail because of the drunken meander factor.

I listen to podcast in bursts, so I’ve just finished listening to all of December’s GWJ podcasts and I’m now listening to Three Moves Ahead from maybe mid-November to the present.

I know each of the TMA’s has their own thread, but the threads for these episodes are long gone, so just wanted to comment here.

I listened to the EU3 episode, and, given that it’s an episode dedicated to a game series I’ve never played and probably won’t ever play, probably the first 3/4 of it held my attention wonderfully. Hearing the guest (Jack?) talking about his English empire that extended into the low countries was a treat. Sometime after Tom and Troy started to explain to him that he didn’t understand the Stability slider the discussion went way too inside baseball and lost me. I hit FF to the next episode.

But I just wanted to point out that the discussion was good because there was a relative neophyte on the panel. Tom and Troy alone would have gone into esoterica much faster and lost me. It’s worth keeping in mind next time you’re putting together a game-specific episode, Troy.

Also my favorite moment from all podcasts in this group is Troy singing musical theater. Not bad. I’m happy you left that in.

And there are times when Dr. Bruce sounds so tired that I just wish you would tell him to go get some sleep. You’ve done that once before, but this latest time you let him stay and whenever you directly addressed him I could swear you were waking him up.

It’s Rob and he’s now a swing panelist. And he’s actually an EU3 sort of vet. I mean, he hasn’t been with the series as long as Tom and I, but he’s no rookie.

Duly noted. Mind you, when we do an Imperialism episode, expect it to get pretty nerdy pretty fast. This is a niche podcast, and I’m sure the effect on many people is like me listening to a WoW podcast (of which there are hundreds). When I can, I ask for explanations for listeners, but a game like EU3 is just so deep that no basic discussion of its mechanics would be remotely interesting in an hour time frame.

I was terrible. It will not happen again. It might show up in the anniversary clip show.

I feel for Bruce, and not just because I forgot to call him and wake him up for our most recent show. But the bitter Bruce of the year end wrap show was at the tail end of a very long stretch of work. Once he got some sleep, he became the old cheerful Bruce that regularly schools me at board games.

I hope he can take the lead next week.

My problem with the Geekbox is the problem I have with a specific subset of geeks in general: Dudes who think anything they personally are not into must therefore be worthless. It’s a maddening trait of far too many people - the ridiculous condescension to anything that doesn’t fit their exact standards for viewing/gaming/reading/whatever.

I expect that sort of nonsense from the non-geek community, because non-geeks are sorta stupid. But I expect better from my fellow nerds. Because, honestly, unless you spend your nights combing over the intricacies of Ozu’s film oeuvre whilst reading Cervantes in the original Spanish, somebody somewhere thinks the thing you love the most in the world is totally fucking retarded. Ditto all the stuff most beloved by the Geekbox.

I think the total wahjah introduced by Fitch talking about his way of handling girls and dates alone makes it worth listening to the podcast. It’s hilarious and makes me feel so damned great about myself.

Anyway, the solution to podcast-you-want-to-listen-to-but-has-some-annoying-parts - if you happen to have an iPhone or another device that supports it, listen to the podcast at 2x speed.

It’s basically the only reason why I listen to RebelFM anymore. RebelFM would be unlistenable without the 2x mode, but with the 2x mode, I’m still able to hear the parts I want to hear without wasting all the time I have to listen to podcasts.

This. This. This.

Can you cite some specific examples, because I just don’t get this. this. this? They will certainly make a lot of fun of each others’ enjoyment of certain things, but I don’t think that any of that is true, mean-spirited condescension. It’s just good-natured ribbing.

I remember Fitch dismissing comics and TV shows instantly and then would go on to talk about some kawaii shit.

Fitch is a total weeaboo. He’s frequently dismissed all western comics.

My favorite Fitchism would be when Karen said that no one on the Geekbox could really speak as a person who understands the black experience, and Fitch insisted that he has a good understanding of black culture. I mean, yikes.

I have a pet peeve with those who dismiss western comics and don’t understand that basically shonen=MU/DCU books. And as we all know all manga does not equal shonen and all comics are not Marvel Universe/DC Universe books.

It goes with what Madkevin said but that is a specific peeve of mine. Also the amount of fanservice and loli in manga these days is ridiculous.

I don’t really listen to the Geekbox anymore because they talk so much about comics, which I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about. Keep it to video/computer games, LOST and Burn Notice (even a passing Psych allusion!) and I’m fine.

We liked doing longer shows, and a lot of listeners liked it when we did longer shows. There is such a thing as “too long,” which we absolutely did break from time to time, but 2-2.5 hours was our comfort zone.

Jeff Green I require more EA podcasts, what the hell am I paying you for.

Also, out of the game.

I don’t understand people’s issue with longer podcasts. You either had 1-3 breaks during the taping or added the musical breaks in post-production. Just hit pause during one and pretend it’s like three podcasts in one! Just all in one file!

At least…my cheap $30 Sansa Clip mp3 player can remember where I left off on podcasts, bunches of 'em, and by default. I honestly don’t know if iPods and such can do so, but I assume they can.

Yes, they can. My own previous cheap-ass non-Apple players couldn’t, and that was the best new feature of the iPod for me…

That’s unfortunate. The Sansa e200’s will remember where you left off in a podcast when you turn it back on, but if you want to stop mid-show and listen to something else you have to use the really sloooooow seek to find where you were.

Luckily, Rockbox supports bookmarking, and the seek feature is dynamic - the longer you hold it the faster it goes, until it slows itself down near the end of the file.

Unfortunate? That it remembers EVERY podcast’s place in it, and gives me the option to resume or start over?

Since you were replying to me, I assume you didn’t understand what I said.

That’s what I get for reading Qt3 at work when it’s busy. Read that as “can’t” for some reason.
