I loved the 1Up Yours and Listen Up era of podcasts. I wanted them to run long because for a long time I listened to them at work and it helped pass the time. Garnett, John, Luke and Shane I could listen to for 4 hrs. All very intelligent, opinionated and well spoken about games. It even stayed good after Shane and Luke left because of the chemistry with Garnett and John.

I feel the same thing with Three Moves Ahead. I don’t pay attention to the length. I just enjoy the show and could listen to it whether its 1hr or 3hrs. I hope some day they can do a podcast with them all in the same room together. I think that is one thing that made 1Up Yours and Listen Up so good and above and beyond a lot of podcasts out there because they were in the same room together and makes the chemistry so much better. I can’t judge 4Guys 1Up yet because I haven’t listened to it yet but its in my que.

It would be nice if we could do that. Being in the same room adds better pacing since you can read body language and play off each other more easily. Tom and I recorded the E3 show in the same room and - background noise aside - I think our rhythm was improved. In fact, I think I felt better on the show after that episode.

There’s a chance we’ll record a PAX East episode (Julian and Rob will both be there at least) and I’d like to do a webcam live video episode type thing like the GWJ guys do from time to time.

Troy,

This has probably been suggested to you, but I think an interesting podcast in the same room or even short series would be if at the next E3 you could get Julian and Bruce to make the trip and you record a Tom vs Bruce vs Troy vs Julian game(s) at Tom’s home. From what I recall I believe he’s mentioned on the podcast that he has several computers setup in a Lan configuration at his home.

I’m not sure how talkative you all are when playing games together and against each other but the idea of it sounds fun from a fan of the show perspective and the nostalgia I have for the CGW/GFW Tom vs Bruce articles.

It would even been fun to hear something like that if you just recorded it over skype the next time you 4 play a game together like that.

Actually, we did record our Dawn of War 2 game, and you can find that on the TMA page.

If there were anyway to get us all to a Shoot Club, that would be a lot of fun.

Troy

So does anyone know what’s going on with Out of the Game? I know Shawn and Jeff and Robert have their own little podcast projects, but the best of them is when they all get together on OOTG :(

I liked them that way initially, although mostly because in the early days of those shows, I spent my summers working shitty temp jobs where I had nothing to do but listen to podcasts all day. I guess my taste started to diverge from the main audience, but by the end, I really couldn’t stand sitting through the hour-long whatcha been playing segments. Hearing people talk for an hour about a handful of games most of which aren’t even out was not my idea of a good time. Ditto the news - rarely if ever did I hear anything on a news segment that I hadn’t already read, and since it was at the end of the show, it often felt like people were trying to blast through it, so there wasn’t much meaningful discussion of it. And dear god, NPDs.

All that said, the second segment was almost always very enjoyable, in that it focused on discussions that weren’t exactly like all the other video game coverage out there.

I have the c200 rock-boxed. I luuuuurve the bookmarking feature.

Thanks Troy! I totally missed out on that because I download the podcast via iTunes. Looks like the link to the replay file is dead though. That would have been fun to see I think in sync with the setup/gameplay audio file.

I’m definitely going to give this a listen even though 8 months LTTP on it.

This is Game Informer’s interesting 50 minute discussion with Irrational Guys Ken Levine, Joe McDonagh, and Nate Wells. At one point, Ken mentions the Qt3 Movie Podcast and calls out Tom for making an astute observation about how shitty 2012 was. I am continually impressed with how thoughtful the guys from Irrational come off, and here they talk about a wide range of subjects with lots of enthusiasm and a dash of authority. Now, Ken, let us know what’s going on over there.

On a related note, the latest Irrational Games podcast is pretty entertaining. That said, I can’t imagine how many episodes they’re going to be able to make on in house stories, especially with Shawn Elliot’s punchy editing putting so much into so little time.

Another (this time final) plug for Idle Thumbs, which stopped recording for good several months ago, but whose back episodes represent the finest gaming podcast I’ve ever heard. They’re so damn funny, goofy, astute, and totally in love with gaming, and their chemistry is awesome. They obviously get a giant kick out of each other and from doing the show.

And as a bonus, they keep getting me re-excited about games from last year, which are now cheap on Steam! Yay!

I heard Chris on a random PC Gamer podcast, and he said they were going to record some short episodes sans Nick but his recording equipment had died. It sounded like they might be getting together again. I would expect something around GDC time.

I checked out the Gamespot Hotspot podcast on a whim, and to my surprise, it wasn’t entirely terrible. More research is required…

Recently tried out the Gamespy Debriefings for the first time, and so far so good. It’s probably because I like listening to Ryan Scott and Anthony Gallegos, but the cast of characters in the background are fairly funny at times, too.

Oh shit, they do it now? Tempting…

Yes - when you put Anthony and Ryan together on a podcast, it sort of nullifies the annoying habits that each of their individual podcasts have. I definitely like Anthony on the GameSpy podcast better than I like him on RebelFM.

Here I was hoping it would just amplify their individual traits.

“When you’re a spy, fat penis.”

Meh, Gamespy from last Thursday was Anthony and two supporting cast. Nothing special from what I heard. Still talking about Fallout 3. Really? Really?

Don’t listen to Bombcast, then - apparently now Brad has started the game. I’m pretty sure that you’re going to be able to find a podcast where some dude talks about his experience in Fallout 3 until the next generation of consoles hits.

Fallout 3 was the runner up for Giant Bombcast’s 2008 Game of 2009.
