Yeah, I’m annoyed by the return to Fallout 3 on Bombcast, too. Especially given that they neglect plenty of other games pretty regularly.

Since I just bought a PS3 again, I’m going back to IGN! Their morning zoo has never let me down.

But here’s the thing: the Bombcast never talked about Fallout 3 in the first place, so this is just catching up. All they ever mentioned was that it was big and long, and that there were console commands to get all the achievements.

Why are those guys such unrelenting achievement whores?

I, for one, am glad that there’s a major gaming podcast that doesn’t assume that the listeners all play every game the week it comes out.

They feed off of each other.

But they DO assume that! They just keep going back to this other game, and it’s annoying if you don’t plan on playing it.

bought Fallout 3 PC for the achievements too, thinking maybe he’d have some time to play it some day but never will

But they also routinely talk about games that they’re playing that are more than twenty minutes old.

That’s interesting that you find it annoying. To what extent do you plan to play the majority of games that come out? I guess if you plan to play most of them, it makes sense that you wouldn’t be annoyed by the different current games they discuss. For myself (and I’m not claiming you should listen to podcasts the way I do), I find a lot of their discussion interesting in and of itself; I’m never going to play Tekken anything, or Trash Panic, etc., but I enjoy listening to them talking about it.

I don’t mind if podcasters themselves happen to play every new game as it comes out.

What annoys me is when they deliberately avoid talking something that’s “old” (meaning: older than 2 weeks ago), and comment on the podcast saying something like “oh everyone already talked about that let’s not talk about that because x and y just came out/is coming out soon!”

Furthermore, this obsession with playing every single new game the second it comes out gets more annoying when the same people start complaining about “slow periods” when nothing is coming out…yet they can’t possibly be bothered to go back and play the billions of other games that came out 6 months previously. They’re too old!

Nah, during slow periods, they definitely have no problem going back to old games.

Hearing a podcast go through a newer game for a couple weeks is fine. But Fallout 3, which has spawned discussion now for over a year, is another thing entirely.

… since losing my gainful employment before the new year i’ve been listening to a ton of podcasts (can also do alot of strategy games while listening to podcasts!). best ones for me right now are Joystiq, GWJ, Fall Damage and Geekbox… and the Qt3 ones are good too.

oh and Brainy Gamer and Rock Paper Shotgun to add.

Anything as consistently energetic and goofy as Idle Thumbs?

I’m not familiar with Fall Damage. What is it about?

Hahaha. Seconded.

People are looking at me funny for cracking up at my desk at work.

I think I found the Idle Thumbs replacement that you have all been waiting for. It’s called Bits and Bytes and it is quite fantastic. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been updated in a while, but the archive is available. All episodes are worth a listen:

Hey, am I allowed to mention that I’m on Pixel Revolt at www.bitmob.com this week?

Because I am. :P

don’t know if any of the podcasters are gaming journalists… but it resembles geekbox… laid back (without the Lost talk which is good!). generally i prefer gaming podcasts with some pc gamers… and one of the main guys on that podcasts has some pc gaming preferences. gotta stick with the old timers sometimes! though its hard to find general strategy gamers on these podcasts… only qt3 related ones are close… like 3 moves ahead.

If you read Gameshark (a site I occasionally write for), they’ve just started podcasting. The inimitable EIC Bill Abner appears, but the rest of the panel is also top notch. Give them a listen. They are just starting out, so it’s a little rough in places but I think the chemistry is there.

Knowing each other helps a ton. Hopefully our audio issues are behind us.

Holy crap! There’s a new Idle Thumbs!

Oh wait, it’s only 1 minute 42 seconds long… hmm.

And it’s a solo guitar piece. Huh?
