Sweet. Idle Thumbs is the only gaming podcast I can stand listening to.
Just watched the first live episode, and agree that fro the time being I prefer previous model. But as they say in the episode the production was to much time intensive for the money it generates a live show has less editing so they have ore time for other projects, just look at the amount of video giantbomb puts out because they do almost no editing. Hope they find a way to make the sow interesting with this model.
I really enjoyed the return of Idle Thumbs, though I was bummed to hear at the end that they’re not planning to adhere to any schedule at all. I assumed they had really missed casting pods and were coming back on at least a bi-weekly basis or something, but it sounds like it could be as little as once a month.
Live Co-Op, thus far, is just a non-starter for me. If they’re going to dump a file that’s the better part of 1GB into the stream, I am NOT going to be able to download it with my podcatcher. Not going to happen. So they can either do a shorter show at this point or lose a viewer, because I really don’t like watching the lower video quality feeds on my television.
Your favorite band sucks.
Well, I WAS in love with them. Until five minutes ago, when they started…well, attempting to discuss Star Trek Online and managed to get pretty much every single fact about why it’s not finished wrong. How is it that news professionals don’t know the news that they’re supposed to be talking about? ST:O wasn’t finished because they were contractually obligated to release it by the time they released it - NOT because they were trying to beat Cataclysm. Seriously, guys - I know it’s supposed to be all rough and informal on podcasts, but you could at least avoid officially reinforcing one of the worst tendencies of the video game subculture.

I can neither confirm nor deny that statement, but how did you know that? :) I thought that wasn’t publicly out there. I wish it was.
I’ve done a brief web search for a hard citation and come up empty. I know that I originally heard it on another, obviously better-informed podcast, but it also seems plausible to me with my knowledge of how these contracts work. Cryptic picked up the contract from Perpetual after they caved in and, reading between the lines, basically had to chuck everything that they did, but I don’t believe the original contract with CBS/Paramount was renegotiated at the time (I could find no story about it, anywhere, and you would think that at least Variety or a fan blog would pick up news of the contract being renegotiated and the release date likely slipping, because, I mean, putting together this much game in two years is just baffling). The contract on any kind of high value IP like this will come with some kind of delivery clause appended to it. I mean, they don’t call it “The Franchise” over at Paramount for nothing, and we’re not dealing with up and coming comic writers who sign over their latest graphic novel to pay the rent, so it’s not going to be one of those “we’ll take this property now and if we can think of something later to do with it, we’ll let you know, guy” deals. At worst, it’s a pernicious and accepted rumor about the internet, but if I can go back through my podcast logs (it’s been a week or two…that’s about 40-60 hours of searching) I’ll see if I can track down the specific speaker.
Ignoring whether or not that’s true, I’m going to imitate Shane Bettenhausen for a moment: 1up staff does not care about PC gaming, who could imagine?
1up.com has always been subpar in their coverage and understanding of the PC gaming-scene, but ever since the closing of GFW and the mass exodus, it may as well not exist. There are bits here and there, mostly from Scooter and Sharkey, occasionally from Jeremy, but they are mostly console-centric, or at least that is how it has played out.
EDIT: God bless them for trying, though. Giantbomb, as fun as their podcast is for listening, are completely ignorant of the PC world. It was great to hear Dave come on last weeks podcast and interject with the dedicated server issue, even if he was using kid-gloves for the counterargument.

Don’t worry about it too much, I was just curious if there was something I could source when discussing that. But it’s basically correct.
‘Crackdown wasn’t great.’
-Giant Bombcast
No joke. They’ll spend 20 minutes on a super obscure NES title, but then come out and say something like “no one knows what a roguelike is”.

I’m listening to this part as I type, and they didn’t say “Crackdown wasn’t great”. They said “The driving in Crackdown wasn’t great”.
GWJ, on the other hand, can’t figure out which Zelda was the Oak-arina of Time. That’s the cel shaded one, right? No, no! Oak-arina of Time is the one on the Gameboy! No, wait, Oak-arina of Time was the one on the Gamecube, right?

Yeah, my favorite podcasts are the ones with a unique perspective and body of knowledge. I love that I can listen to the Bombcast and learn about 90s console games and professional wrestling, and then turn on Brainy Gamer and get a more intellectual examination of gaming.

I am really enjoying the 4th Jumping the Shark (GameShark) podcast. The whole group is quite knowledgeable, but for me Bill Abner and Danielle Riendeau really steal the show with their insight. I highly recommend you guys give it a listen.
I’m a bit behind on the pc gamer podcast. 2 weeks ago they had Whitta and Greg “cancer man” Vede on. It was great. There was some life on the show again.
Heads up: for some strange reason, my iTunes wouldn’t download the latest version of 4 Guys/1up, despite being subscribed. I only got it to download by going to the podcast’s page on itunes and hitting the DL button manually.
Huh. Weird. It’s not terrible, though - they pull Jaffe through and he admits, in so many words, that it’s kind of his fault that Calling All Cars sucked because he didn’t know what the hell he was doing with that type of game. The segment with Shane I could take or leave, but any podcast that leaves me thinking that Jaffe is less of a loudmouthed asshat has achieved something special.
Thanks for the tip. I had assumed they missed a week.
