3 moves ahead is greatest when it has a disgruntled Geryk on. his being a surgeon i can understand time limits, but he has to be on it more!
i still prefer joystiq for overall best ‘gaming’ podcast right now. chris, ludwig and justin are pretty good to listen to while gaming. I’ll do a few rounds of BC2 or strategy gaming listening to there podcast, they’re an odd mix that works well.
I wonder if the lack of alcohol had anything to do with that. To me Garnett always seemed at his best about 1 1/2 to 2 drinks in. Things went downhill at about 4 drinks but by then the discussion had descended into chaos anyway.
I wouldn’t worry or draw too much from this one episode. That episode and Friday’s are just janky releases where they used their spare interviews and such. Any group of people will improve in coordination with repeated attempts. Like Parish says, they won’t be getting into heated arguments, but they’ll still be good.
I love ATB and Retronauts so I kind of hope they find someone else to lead the flagship podcast since Parish has implied that taking that over might mean he would have to step down from one or both of his other podcasts.
I’m guessing the next one won’t be much different, I curious about the Mark Cerny interview. Matt Leone and Thierry Nguyen will probably be regulars on the podcast considering they do most of the high profiles previews for the site, and that is the main focus of this podcast along with the recent releases and maybe some news. I don’t expect a consistent format until they change the name of the podcast.

I’m not a big fan of the new 4 Guys with Parish hosting. He’s great on ATB and Retronauts, but that’s mainly because those podcasts primarily focus on one subject per episode, which Parsih seems to be better at covering. When you get into as diverse a podcast as 4 Guys 1 Up, he doesn’t seem to have as good a handle on segueing as Garnett or even Eliss did.
It’s all good, though. Weekend Confirmed more than makes up for any shortcomings on the 1UP side.
I’m just not sure that Parish has the breadth of interest, or perhaps more accurately, the level of in mainstream releases, to host the flagship podcast. He’s acutely interested in RPGs and retro games, which makes him an excellent host for podcasts focusing on those subjects. 1upYours has always been a bit of a catch-all discussion about what’s new and what’s coming up. It doesn’t seem to me that Jeremy would even care to bring up the latest Modern Warfare game, for example. Certainly rounding out the cast with people who tend to cover the bigger and more mainstream non-RPG titles (Leone, Scooter, Nelson) would presumably make up for gaps in Jeremy’s interests/knowledge, but I’m a little unsure about how well that will work out.
If they decide to bring in Tina Sanchez as a regular I won’t be listening. I’ll give them a shot if they decide to bring Alice in. I find her to be somewhat annoying, but infinitely more tolerable than Tina. Who else is there? Ray is a helluva nice guy, but will literally disappear for an entire podcast. Justin Haywald is okay, but to me he’d be Jeremy Parish part two and wouldn’t help round out the cast very well.
The most obvious choice would be Sam Kennedy, who meets most of your requirements. I figure I’ll just wait and see what they do at this point.
I left Sam Kennedy out for a couple of reasons. First, I think the guy is way too busy to commit to the podcast on a regular basis. Secondly, he’s very milquetoast and not very dyanmic when he is on podcasts. He’s great when the podcast centers around stories from the old days of EGM, but otherwise I find him to be a fairly forgettable podcast participant.
I had a very similar thought, although I liked Garnett 4 drinks in (it was generally the other people on the show that couldn’t handle their liquor). My other guess is that having been told by so many people (as he mentions a few times in the show) that they want him to get back into podcasting, he was probably feeling a little more self-aware than normal. At least, that’s how I would feel.
I’m a good way through the first Weekend Confirmed and I’m really enjoying it. Garnett is doing a good job hosting, though he tries too hard to be funny at times, especially in the first half of the podcast. He also moves through topics a little too quickly at times. I wish he’d let Cannata finish even a thought on Just Cause 2. I got almost nothing from his impressions because Garnett would not shut up.
Speaking of Jeff Cannata, I’m already loving him. He’s got a great mix of enthusiasm and brains and his voice even sounds good. He seems to consider topics thoughtfully and answer the same way. I really like him on the podcast.
Brian Leahy seems content to be the voice of the internet. He’s cynical and trollish most of the time, though not really hateable (unlike Cory Banks). He reminds me a bit of Shane Satterfield or Michael McWhertor when they make appearances on GTTV’s Bonus Round. I think he mixes in pretty well with Garnett and Jeff.

Yeah I was very happy with the first Weekend Confirmed. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the new 1up Yours, and I’ve deleted the old 1up feed that lived in my podcasts list for the past 3-4 years.

Brian Leahy seems to give a more substantial PC Gamer perspective that was sorely missing from 1UP’s podcast. Shacknews used to be a PC-centric site, so it’s not surprising, but still a refreshing thing to hear.

Damn, GiantBomb never fails to crack me up. Just listening to them talk about WiiWare and DSiWare titles over the store theme music always makes their comments 100x more hilarious.
I loved it when they got complaints that the music was too loud, so they turned it up.
It does seem like you could easily guess his opinion given just about any subject.

Ryan Davis trying to straight read that ridiculous shit they crank out in wiiware/dsiware every week is probably my favorite part of the show.

Awesome Giantbomb Deadly Premonition endurance run that Bahimiron mentioned a few pages back has started. I’d link but I don’t have that privilege yet.
Edit:Brad and Ryan are doing their own endurance run of Deadly Premonition, the runs seem to be independent of one another.
I’ll definitely be checking that out. The chances are fairly slim that I’ll actually be playing through Deadly Premonition myself anytime soon.
In one post, Poe, you have made my day better.
My only regret is that they can’t change Francis York’s name to Chuck Mackeral.
