The Gamespy Debriefings is slowly becoming one of my favorite shows. The addition of Scott Bromley has made it become less and less about games, but more and more about hilarious tangents. Of course, to most this is probably even more reason not to listen, but I’m enjoying it.

I just finished listening to the latest unnamed 1up flagship podcast. I wasn’t expecting much when I heard that Ray Barnholdt was hosting because the guy is usually so quiet. I mean, he can completely disappear on a podcast. I was pleasantly surprised with the job he did though. It was genuinely funny quite a few times throughout. I hope he sticks as the permanent host.

So I downloaded a few podcasts in my backlog to my iPad for my recent trip instead of lugging my laptop with me and used the double speed feature for the first time, it’s absolutely hilarious hearing chris remo talking in doublespeed about his star craft 2 exploits. I don’t know if I can go back to regular speed, hopefully there is a a way to get it to play doublespeed on iTunes so I can keep my iPad free of podcasts.

I just listened to the most recent (5/7) Gamespy Debriefings and it was absolutely hilarious. I will be listening henceforth. I probably looked like an absolute crazy person cracking up while I was cutting my front lawn.

Not even by accident are any of their voices the same volume! One dude’s so loud that even when he’s barely above a whisper he’s almost as loud as anyone else. Another guy seems to either not have a mic or it’s switched off. Is the sound check guy on vacation or is it always like this?

I had to shut it off and switch to the DS9 podcast. A podcast for a tv show that’s been off the air for 10yrs has better audio!

I’m half way into the latest episode and it has already made me unsubscribe from Rebel FM. This takes its place. The characters totally crack me up.

RebelFM also suffers from the recording-levels problem sometimes. Arthur’s lower pitch doesn’t come through well, especially in my noisy VW Jetta.

I listened to last weeks Rebel FM on the way in this morning. I know alot of people here like A Life Well Wasted. But I found Robert Ashley to be unbearable on Rebel FM. He seems to have the “too cool for school” gaming hipster attitude and tone that makes me want to fast forward every time he starts talking.

“I want to call all first person shooters Doom clones !!!”

Ugh.

I feel like this is pretty much his MO most of the time. As good as ALWW is, couldn’t it only have come from someone with his type of perspective? Am I a douche for saying so?

RebelFM has only continued to improve over the last few months IMO. Robert Ashley is Robert Ashley wherever he is…which I love. Obviously he has a different persona on ALWW, but I’m talking about any unscripted unplanned podcasts - GFW Radio, RebelFM, or otherwise.

RFM used to be the last podcast I’d listen to when I was done listening to everything else, but it’s definitely grown to be one of my favorites now.

To me RebelFM does a decent job on previewing new games, working for IGN gives them lots of access. The letters section I usually skip although some times they can be entertaining.

Heh, those last 2 GameSpy Debriefings were pretty funny in spots. I listened to the most recent one driving to work and I laughed so hard when whatshisname did the Wilford “Oatmeal and Diabetes” Brimley impersonation that I almost wrecked my car. Then I listened to the podcast prior to that on the way home and almost wrecked again when one of them did the character of Little British Boy With Cholera Who Wishes to Speak to the Velveteen Rabbit.

I just really wish they didn’t play it so blue and sophomoric the rest of the time. I don’t mind cursing, but I really don’t need repeated references to Dr. Manhattan’s blue penis or three minutes of Viva Pinata sex euphemisms. The podcasts would have been really great if they checked that stuff at the door.
