Ha! Out of the Game never really came into its own and certainly never achieved anything close to a regular release schedule. Luke Smith couldn’t be bothered to show up for most of the podcasts and when he was on he couldn’t have sounded less interested. Robert Ashley never seemed very interested either. Shawn Elliott, Jeff Green, and N’Gai Croal all seemed pretty engaged, which was usually enough to carry the podcast, but even so, they couldn’t all be wrangled to do it on any consistent basis.
Yeah, but there seemed to be new hope after their recent return. Maybe not.
As much as I like Jeff Green, N’Gain Croal and Shawn Elliott as podcasters, Out of the Game never became a favorite of mine. All of the participants seemed very constrained and it was boring to listen to them not actually comment on games.
This. Smith was a nice counter balance to Shane’s dickery back in the day when 1up was listenable, but I had no use for him here, even when he did bother to show.
Its funny, I really like Rebel FM still and I deleted OoftG months ago. Go figure.
I discovered Idle Thumbs kind of late in their run, but listening to the old episodes is a pretty timeless experience. I’m new to 8-4 as well and I’m liking the new perspective. Aside from some of the more popular ones, Brainy Gamer is great but certainly speaks to a certain audience. I didn’t see it mentioned here recently. I’ve also been checking out Flap Jaw Space from the digitalchumps site, the last few episodes are decent and sometimes pretty wild and they could be hitting their stride.
New Out of the Game is up. Fifty minutes in and the only game they’ve talked about is Call of Duty 2, albeit humorously. It’s a lot of Walking Dead talk.
The GWJ guys seem to really not get Fallout NV at ALL. I get tired of how uninformed they are before they start talking about a game, it’s happening more and more lately.
And on Giantbomb, was anyone else turned off by guest Alex N’s constant negativity? That guy dislikes just about everything, apparently…?
Haha, if only he were here to get your first impression of him. He’s always been like that, ever since the Gamespot podcast even.
I loved the Gamespy Debriefings this week. Topics included early 90s Nickelodeon shows, Ryan Scott cosplaying with his wife, and how drinking bum wines actually makes you start looking and acting homeless.
That’s too bad, he was a real bummer on EVERYTHING. I think next time I see him attached to a podcast I’ll take a pass that week.

Agreed on GWJ my favorite cast for sure, but sometimes I just want to be able to IM then or something and explain a very basic idea of a game.
Back when Fallout 3 was released they ranted endlessly about how it wasn’t like their rose-tinted memories of Fallout 1 & 2. I stopped listening to GWJ at about that time – they basically don’t play games anymore, and when they do they are usually unable to say anything intelligent about them. It’s like they completely lost interest in the hobby but can’t let go of it for some reason.
If it makes you feel any better, after a while you get used to it and start to pick up the beats. I’ve been listening to the Screened podcast for a while now and after initially having been put off, I’ve started to figure out when he’s being him.

Yep, this is one of the reasons that I haven’t listened to GWJ in a year or so. They are wrong often, and it is all coated in a very off-putting pretentiousness.
Yeah. I’ve mentioned this before, but I ditched GWJ ages ago because at one point their snootiness about games becomes less than enjoyable to listen to. I don’t mind the PC-centric coverage, Idle Thumbs is still a favorite of mine and it hasn’t been on in months. What I couldn’t stand was a combination of pretentiousness and bullheaded ignorance. Really, I can deal with a bit of pretention, but when it’s immediately followed by someone asking if Ocarina of Time was the cel shaded one, it’s time to turn it off before the migraine starts.
Listened to the new Out of the Game podcasts over the weekend. I’m not sure if it’s because the Gamespy guys have taken his schtick and gone way overboard with it, but Shawn Elliott’s not quite as funny as he used to be. A lot of his jokes just fell flat. Still, I listen because Jeff Green could be one of the most charming dudes in the gamine business, and even if I don’t always agree with him, everything Robert Ashley has to say is worth listening to.
Edit: If someone were to setup a feed to upload the old CGW/GFW podcasts in the order originally aired, one a week so as to recreate the original run, would there be a possibility of them ending up in trouble? Would 1up shut them down with speed?
Nor will it be. Theoretically. Until another con where they all show up, anyway.
Thing is, Hot Scoops just took a job with Irrational, so now you’ve got Big Bird, Boost, and Scoops on the East Coast (though one’s in Bethesda, which I assume is a non-trivial distance from Boston, but I live in Texas so any two cities that are within a four hour drive of one another seem “close” to me) along with Shawn Elliott. I assume that Remo and Elliott are both getting their talking rocks off with the Irrational podcast and Out of the Game, but now I’m kind of rooting for Video Games to quit his job and move out there so that I can start pestering all of them incessantly to start casting again.
I’m about to do another podcastening (since so many of my shows seem to have been canceled - I’ve only listed to, like, one and a half episodes of Fall Damage and it’s gone now) - is there anything that I’m not listening to that I absolutely need to be?

No. Boost is in Irrational, Hot Scoops is in 2K Marin in CA, I think. They’re pretty much split equally among the coasts. At most, we can hope to instigate an East Coast/West Coast rivalry and document the events.
Nope. Recent development.
I’m still enjoying the GWJ podcast, and don’t get any the snootiness our pretentious vibe that some of you are feeling. They do make an effort to get the hosts that been playing more recent games on, but it’s not always possible.
On the Gamespy Debrifing I’m probably out for good, since they became an all comedy podcast I’ve listen to very few episodes, and while occasionally there is a funny bit, most of the times there stories just fall flat with me and I find the overwhelming amount of personal stuff that Scoot and Brian share with the world a bit unconformable. I have to point out in contrast the Out of the Game podcast they do there funny bits that I find more entertaining than the Gamespy, and although they don’t always work for me they don’t over do it and provide other interesting discussions about games and other stuff. A warning if you are following the Walking dead series and haven’t read the comics episode 18 can be a bit of a spoiler.
Yeah, I put his snarky sniping down to his being the substitute on that podcast. He may have felt compelled to speak up, and sarcasm is the go-to mode when you’re trying to break into a conversation for the sake of breaking in. I like him on the Screened podcast just fine.
Speaking of Giant Bomb, anyone know what actually happened to “injure” Ryan?
Watch the Kinect quick looks. It’s somewhere in there.
