Stevie Case has a podcast? Who is Stevie Case? I dare one of you to listen to it.

Huh, didn’t know about this. That’s really nice.

I don’t think its that they’re ‘pretentious’… well maybe a little. More like some of these gaming podcasts, not just GWJ, they really don’t sound that excited about games or gaming… more about the culture at most. Plus some of the hippy indie cred… or contrarian view of games. maybe a bit too much posturing with little about games it seems.

These days, seems I’m listening to podcasts from less ‘professional’ gaming sites.

Right now the two general gaming podcasts I listen to are Giant Bombcast and Weekend Confirmed. Both podcasts pretty much follow the same formula: a small group of guys talk about what they’ve been playing, the news, and reader mail. But I love the Bombcast while I seem like I’m always on the verge of canceling WC.

I recently realized the reason for this disparity in my enjoyment of the two: Weekend Confirmed has too much of an antagonistic tone to it relative to the Bombcast. Consider, for example, this week’s discussion on the Bombcast about simultaneous digital and disk releases. This is a nuanced and controversial topic, but the GB crew talked it out, joked with each other, let everyone have a say, found some common ground, and while they disagreed on some stuff, it was civil if animated.

Now consider the recent discussion on Weekend Confirmed about the closing of Bizarre Creations. They’re bickering like children, and each one of them seems more intent on presenting an opposing viewpoint than they are on having a discussion about the topic. They just couldn’t grasp each others’ point of view. This is endemic to that particular podcast, where they generally rag on each other, call each other out on verbal flubs, and question each other on the legitimacy of their opinions.

So basically Giant Bombcast is like a group of friends hanging out and having a conversation about games. Weekend Confirmed is like three people reading Internet forum threads in real-time.

Which is why, despite being a Shacker, I dropped Weekend Confirmed.

Agreed on Giantbomb - the “friends hanging out” vibe is what keeps it as my top “immediate listen” 'cast.

GWJ used to be that, but either I’ve changed or they have - Cory and/or mtkafka have the problem nailed down pretty squarely. I still listen to them, but only after the bombcast and it’s easier and easier to skip chunks of “discusssion”

I also MUCH prefer a podcast that doesn’t have a pre-canned topic - I’m a fan of a more free form discussion, and letting a topic come around naturally. Many of the GWJ topics feel forced or don’t interest me.

On that note, I do like the IGN Gamescoop and the Gamespy Debrief (even though the latter isn’t very game related) - those guys also feel like a bunch of close friends just talking, and they get a laugh out of me more often than not.

Lastly, the PC Gamer UK guys seem cool too - though they update very infrequently, sadly. The US PC Gamer crew also seems like a decent bunch, but I’ve only recently added them to the rotation.

Weekend Confirmed is definitely lacking in the drunken video game rambling that made 1UP Yours fun to listen to. The Bombcast is my favorite of the regulars, but I feel like if Garnett brought in some liquor occasionally, like almost every episode of 1YU, it’d be a better show for it.

Hey, the unrestrained ranting is the best thing about Weekend Confirmed!

Recommended while you’re basting the turkey is the new Three Moves Ahead, as Troy, Bruce, Rob and guest star Dan Stapleton wax nostalgic about X-Com.

Have to agree about this. WC is a slog after listening to the vastly superior Giant Bomb and Game Scoop casts every week. It just doesn’t have “it.”

I really groove on Three Moves Ahead. Troy’s such a genteel host!

I feel like some liquor (but not getting hammered while recording) adds a bit of fun to the discussions. I do enjoy WC because I like Garnett, and I feel the show only gets better through each recording.

I dropped TMA from my rotation a couple of months back because I was just listening to too many gaming podcasts each week. But a roundtable on X-Com? That’s what I listen to gaming podcasts for! Thank you.

Oh, and another thumbs up for the Bombcast.

What’s in your rotation besides Bombcast lately? I’m hoping to find something new.

What the hell? The newest Irrational Interviewee is… Zack Snyder!?

Why not?

Not complaining, just surprised.

Oh, I was surprised too. It wasn’t as good as the Cliffy B. one but I love witnessing people that make me geek out, geeking out themselves.

I want Ken Levine to interview Sam Raimi so I can’t tell who is saying what.

My current mix:

  • Giant Bombcast
  • Joystiq [my favorite by far]
  • GameSpot HotSpot
  • GWJ [waning interest]
  • Qt3 Games [especially the latest one, which was pure genius :)]
  • Drunken Gamers Radio
  • IGN GameScoop
  • GamerCast: Video Game Show [on the odd weeks where they actually still do a show]
  • PC Gamer
  • Chatterbox [also waning, very hit or miss]
