Okay. So. If you like the format of A Life Well Wasted, you might try the first episode of the newly revamped Joystiq Show. It’s a little more conventional, but it’s different. I pass no judgments - only information. I am, however, pleasantly surprised with it thus far.

There’s a guy that’s been doing 1UP Yours recaps on the this year podcast. Maybe not everyone’s thing, but it’s enjoyable to re-tread some of this stuff at 2x speed on my iPod.

What I thought was pretty amazing though was that back in 2008, they were talking about alternate environments they’d like to see AAA games released in. They specifically mentioned the Renaissance and Old West, which as we now know ended up being fully explored (and tremendously successful) in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and upcoming Revelations, and the other in Red Dead Redemption.

For all the silly predictions they got wrong, they were sure right on the money with those!

Is it just me, or does the PC Gamer US podcast do an incredibly poor job of discussing PC Games?

Quick, name the most important PC game exclusives to hit the market during from February onwards to now. Were I to do that list, it’d be Witcher 2, Shogun, Terraria, Frozen Synapse, and The Sims Medieval.

Of those games, Frozen Synapse rated a brief “strategy” discussion on one podcast. That’s it. None of the other games have merited any sort of impressions, reviews, design philosophy discussions…anything.

Seems odd.

Heh, you listen to the PC Gamer US podcast.

Well no. I don’t.

But I could be persuaded if they’d actually discuss some PC games. Instead, reading the podcast summary descriptions it sounds as if one needs to put one’s monocle in and sit back for some industry insider jokes and design theory discussions by folks who probably are in over their heads in such a discussion.

There’s very little consumer appeal to any of it.

I find the UK PC Gamer casters to be alot more likeable anyway.

There are some personalities (Logan, Luke) on the PCG podcast that rub me the wrong way, and even though I’m as big a fan of PC Gaming as you can just about get, even I can’t help but roll my eyes every time the discussion turns to consoles. I subscribed to it, but I only listen when I’m out of options.

PCG UK is tremendously better, as Tony points out the crew there is much more likable and the discussions seem more relevant. It’s a great podcast, though it seems to be only monthly, sadly.

Still no word yet from Gamespy Debriefings or Rebel FM about the whole Bromley situation. It’s really pretty irritating when something you expect to listen to every week suddenly disappears without a trace. You’d think they could at least spend five minutes typing something up to explain the whole mess. I guess it’s cooler to be spooky and mysterious about everything though eh?

I heard there were some layoffs at Gamespy - is that the “Bromley situation” you were referring to, or was there more to the story I missed?

I miss that show as well, and I hope to get some info on it soon.

Mixture of bad timing. The last Debriefings was recorded before the firings, Gies is moving, Ryan Scott is AFK due to his father being in hospital (the last Geekbox was recorded without him).
It isn’t a pretty story so it’s understandable why they aren’t being overly candid about it.

Back when Kristen Salvatore was the editor and the table was normally her, Gary Whitta, Logon, Norman Chan, and Dan the pc gamer us podcast version was pretty good.

I can see that - it’s a pretty solid line up for sure, especially with Mr. Whitta on the list.

I wonder if some of the problem is they seem to be overrun with interns doing the podcast, perhaps?

I would agree that PC Gamer podcast is better when is not only interns, I’m guessing the magazine schedule interferes with the recording.

Also some props for the Joystiq show for doing a well produced podcast and with so far two good editions. Glad someone is trying something new in the games podcast. I enjoy the round tables discussions podcasts but doesn’t need to be the same in 99.9% of the podcasts. I also would like someone to do a games podcast similar to Filmspotting by far my favorite movies podcast.

I thought the PC Gamer Podcast (US) has been doing a great job talking about free-to-play games and such. They don’t discuss everything, but I still like what they do discuss.

I’m really impressed, particularly given my experience with their podcast before, which was mostly Justin McElroy trying to be funny, and since he’s gotten his own podcast where he’s funny on purpose he apparently used up all his goof bucks on that one every week. I like the segment format, I don’t feel like I’m not hearing discussion, and I’m actually finding out shit. Like things about Jon St. John. Or games I have never understood what they were (revelation - Rock of Ages is apparently Marble Madness meets Rampart with crazy art). Even the Brazilian (?) guy that I’m having a hard time understanding (I suspect he’d have subtitles if he were on the History Channel) is interesting.

Unfortunately there seems to be an overwhelming amount of negative comments on the Joystiq page on the new podcast, apparently some people just want people talking and being funny podcast instead of more informative and though out podcast.
I’m fan of both types, but fear that round table podcast besides being a lot easier to do have a lot more fans.

I’ve been trying to give Andrea Rene the benefit of the doubt on Weekend Confirmed, but after the last episode I’m finally proclaiming that I do not appreciate her presence on the show. Not only are her opinions typically half-baked at best (like, ya know) but Garnett’s constant fumbling attempts to flirt with her are grating on my nerves. No more, I say!

I did a Google image search. Damn, but I cannot blame the man, if she’s the one most commonly identified with the name. I’d probably be awkwardly trying to flirt with her too if I were him. Of course, I’m a crazy, socially inept emotional retard, so that’s not saying much for him.

It struck me as I considered the question that Garnett never worked for G4 or IGN, so he might not be used to having a preternaturally hot woman (i.e. Jessica Chobot, Morgan Webb…basically, any on-camera talent) on the podcast with him on any kind of regular basis. Or, hell, a woman at all - did any of the ladies at 1Up show up regularly on shows with him?

They used to have Tina Sanchez on the 1up shows. She was even worse than Andrea Renee to listen to. Alice Lang was also pretty terrible to listen to. Jenn Frank (who was awesome) was on Retronauts all the time, but I don’t recall her ever being on a podcast with Garnett. And of course there was Jane Pinckard who was the absolute best.

While I agree about Rene’s poorly substantiated opinions, she’s getting major pints from me for calling Garnett out on his stupid, churlish comments. Several times on the most recent ep she basically just brought him to a halt by saying something like “Really? I’m tring to make a point here and you interrupt with such a stupid joke?” he needs someone on that show to swat him on the nose when he talks or interrupts just because he can’t stand not controlling the conversation.
