I guess is good news for GiantBomb because WiskeyMedia venture money was probably running out. As long as John Davidson is there they are probably alright but off course CBS is a big company they could change at any minute. Apparently the same day 1UP is losing more staff full integration into IGN is probably not far away. There is a difference that GiantBomb was growing when acquired and 1UP was on the way down, hope they have better luck.

Here’s the archive of GDC Radio podcasts. They’re still very listenable and relevant, even if as a sort of historical time capsule. Also, just to be clear, it was technically The Gamasutra Podcast on GDC Radio — it wasn’t a show about the GDC. Tom Kim interviewed a buttload of industry people in person at all kinds of venues, over the phone/VoIP, etc — and talked about their ventures, passions, etc.
Just as an example, the two-part localization panel he put together was particularly impressive and interesting:
Today’s edition of the Gamasutra Podcast, presented by Tom Kim, features the first part of a packed panel discussing game localization, including Atlus’ Bill Alexander, Nintendo’s Nate Bihldorff, Media Sunshine’s Heather Chandler, Gaijinworks’ Victor Ireland, Capcom’s Ben Judd, Mastiff’s Bill Swartz, Namco Bandai’s Hiroshi Tanaka, and Nintendo’s Bill Trinen. The assembled experts talk in detail regarding taking Japanese console titles and bringing them to Western markets.
Basically it was an industry-centered show with none of this seat-of-your-pants “games criticism” malarkey. That’s why I’m liking Jennisodes despite the audio quality of some of the call-ins — there are actual devs talking about their craft, why they do it, etc.
I would tolerate a “we played some games and want to talk about them” show if they weren’t all so laughably, stereotypically masculine and effects-laden and shallow (or, on the other extreme, stuffy and pedantic). I just haven’t found any such show yet. The RPS Electronic Wireless Show would be right up my alley… if it were produced…
This week’s episode of Games, Dammit from 1up about Mass Effect 3 was really good. Which is why it’s a bummer they just liquidated most of the remaining staff.

The Three Moves Ahead iPad episode convinced me to try Ascension. The good news is that Ascension is a great game. The bad news is that my wife wants her iPad back.

A major reason I got an iPhone! Anyone else listen to JTS me3 discussion? They sounded pretty uniformed yet still argumentative, didn’t know the difference between assests and readiness. Big pet peeve of mine because I want to be able to correct them so they can have a legitimate debate.

Is there a feed for just the Qt3 games podcast? I don’t want the movie reviews.
Five days after my mourning the infrequency of the RPS Electronic Wireless Show comes news from RPS that the Wireless Show has been put out to pasture, but in its place has arisen the Rock, Paper Shotcast. Alec said in the comments that this will be a “shorter but more regular” thing. Hopefully it’ll be somewhat consistent.
Ascension is the kind of game that would be terrible to play in person, but really excels in the iOS space. I usually have four or five games going at once and win 1/3 of them.
I learned a lot on that show.

Gee thanks Brian!
All due respect, but you couldn’t be more wrong about this Troy. It’s a great game to play in person. In fact, it’s near perfect for that. It has a reasonable time commitment. It’s fairly simple to teach but still has plenty of complexity. Beginners can compete immediately and the more experienced players still remain engaged. Learning and playing the game in person, with a friend who raises his eyebrows when you end a turn instead of an AI prompt asking you if you’re sure, is nerve-wracking and instructive, and hilarious. Holding those beautiful cards and talking through your turns in real time…pure joy.
Bonus…it’s also fascinating to watch in person.

No offense intended, Christien, I just don’t see movies in the theater very often, nor am I into movies anywhere nearly as much as I am into games. Therefore the movie podcast rarely appeals to me. Nothing personal.

I’m kind of in the same boat. I love the movie podcast. You guys have fantastic chemistry. But the way I use it is to look up each episode after I’ve seen the films myself, which usually happens months and months after the release. In other words, nothing I really need a weekly update for.
The games podcast is the only one I tune into as soon as the episodes are uploaded.
This. I just listened to the True Grit episode. That’s how far behind my movie-watching is.
I’m also in that same boat. While I enjoy hearing other peoples opinions about games, being a game is generally a construct prone to issues (technical, balance, design, etc.) and as such, critical talk is a little more universal.
But sometimes people just fucking HATE a movie I really enjoyed, or the other way around in some cases, and that I find aggrivating, so as I’ve gotten older I tend to ignore movie reviews/discussions.
Not that a movie can’t have issues that everyone can see and critisize as well, of course, but I tend to suspend my disbelief easier with a movie I’m already predispositioned to enjoy I suppose. Movies are also a lot easier to pick apart, too, seems like.
None taken. I was just availing myself of the opportunity to take a dig at you.
I’m way behind on the games podcasts for much the same reason tylertoo describes above. I’m just too spoiler averse to hang in on some of the game discussion, usually because those talking get so passionate about a game that I suddenly want to play it–I’m still halfway through the Bastion podcast from last year, for goodness sake–and I just don’t have the time to play that many games. Probably because I’m always watching movies. This is a real shame as I love the games podcasts. Where I differ is that I just don’t mind them sitting there in my iTunes podcast list until I get around to them.
I get it though, because I do have folks complain to me from time to time from the other direction. “I tried to listen to your podcast and they were talking about video games and you weren’t on it.” So I get why Jambe feels that way.
Also, thanks for the kind words, Thomasch!

Ditto. I almost never see a movie in the theater so I’m years behind anything they review. I do occasionally listen to a bit if I don’t have any idea what the movie is, to get a feel for if I might see it though.
Strangely, I don’t mind listening to people talk about a game I haven’t played or may never play.
I don’t mind having the extra shows in the feed though, doesn’t bother me.
See, I’m weird (pause to wait for gasps to die down), I listen to the movie podcasts faithfully despite rarely having seen the movie they’re discussing first. Christine, Kelly and Tom are like three arguing lobes of some freakish brain that is extremely entertaining to eavesdrop on. The games podcasts are a whole other thing, usually giving you a better insight into one of the community members.
There’s an inverse relationship between the likelihood of me seeing a movie and the likelihood of me listening to a QT3 movie podcast, at least in a timely manner. If there’s no chance of me seeing it (eg Apollo 18) then I’ll definitely listen, because the synopses are hilarious even if you don’t get half of the in-jokes. But if I’m likely to see it but haven’t yet, then there’s no chance, because I don’t want it to be spoiled. So I skip ahead to the 3x3.

The few installments of the movie podcast I heard were fine, but I’m just not into movies (and movie review podcasts) as I am into games and game podcasts.
First episode of the Rock, Paper, Shotcast had terrible audio quality. Sheesh.
So I’m happy to break up the RSS feeds into two separate things provided someone shows me how to do it. Otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll just have to get used to the fact that the movie podcast posts every Monday and the games podcast posts every Wednesday. More or less. :)

Because you’re categorizing things, Wordpress is already doing this for you automatically, you just didn’t know it ;)
