Okay, so this isn’t really a podcast, but it doesn’t deserve it’s own thread and I can’t figure out any better place to put it. It’s the Retrogame Roadshow, an Antique Roadshow homage, but about video games. This one is from the 2013 Portland Retro Gaming Expo, but they’ve been doing them for a few years now at a number of conventions, so search around if you find it interesting. I happen to be featured here with a secret, McDonald’s acquired item (listen closely for a woman gasping “OH MY GOD” when I pull it from my jacket), but there are a few more interesting items, like a set of champange flutes from the release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
Check the poster’s video feed for other, more interesting panels from the Expo, as well.
Also, Jeff Cannata has a new podcast called DLC, with Christian Spicer, wherein they take live “phone” calls. Anyone check that out, yet?

Just wanted to thank everyone who recommended Crate & Crowbar. I’ve listened to the first few episodes, and it’s definitely going in my regular rotation.
Is there a way to make the Game Design Roundtable feed download automatically? I may just be an idiot, but in the podcatcher I use it only shows up as episode info, and doesn’t download the actual audio. I need to click through to the website then play through the embedded player, which I can’t do on the train.
I should look at Crate and Crowbar. I’ve been looking at a couple new podcasts recently, and have tried the Indoor Kids for a couple episodes, but I’m not really feeling it. The banter is fun enough I suppose, and they’re nicely enthusiastic, but they seem to have a very superficial understanding of game design, so I dont’ feel like I really get much out of it.

Weekend Confirmed is getting the boot from Shacknews/Gamefly at the end of the month. They have assured their audience that it will continue on independently, but it’s still disappointing. Sure Garnett drives me nuts half of the time, but I’ve been listening to that podcast for what… 8 years now? I hope it continues on indefinitely.
That’s odd… I’d definitely try using another app, as I haven’t heard of that problem before. If you do, let me know how it goes!
I’m dumb! I deleted the feed and re-added it, but when I searched, this time I found 2 listings, one was just the info, and the other was the actual feed and it’s downloading episodes now. So it seems like it works fine, and I just suck at apps. (Using DoggCatcher, BTW).
Was that from the last episode? I only listen sporadically but I’d also like the podcast to continue, it’s been going on for such a long time.
I’ve listened to the first couple episodes and I think the banter between Spicer and Cannata is pretty great. The part where they take calls is not very appealing to me. For one they’ve been having technical issues with the calls, but even when it’s working it’s still suffers from awkward audience question syndrome, compounded by skype delay awkwardness.
It was in the New Year’s Eve episode. They’re still recording at the professional studio they use through the end of January, but after that it’ll be independent. Lee bought the name and has control of the feed, but they’re probably going to record from his home once he buys some equipment and the podcast will have a new website.

Yeah, given that they’re not having particularly extended conversations with the callers, I’m not sure what they gain over taking written questions, whether live via twitter or stream chat or whatever, or by email beforehand. The technical issues really dragged the last episode down for a while.
Haha, okay, good to hear. No idea why there’s 2 listings though. I’ll bug Dirk about that. Thanks again for looking into it!
I know nothing about how this stuff works, but it seems like there might be 2 separate RSS feeds, one for podcatcher type things, and the other is just a basic RSS feed that contains all updates to the blog (maybe it came with the blog software automatically?). However Doggcatcher searches RSS feeds, it probably just picked up both of them.
The podcast feed URL is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheGameDesignRoundTable
The other one (just links) is http://thegamedesignroundtable.com/feed
Also, great work on the podcasts. They’re definitely right in the sweet spot of the kind of detailed design discussions I’m interested in!

From the way he was talking in the most recent episode, it sounds like Garnett may be losing his job at Gamefly as well. Are they dumping Shacknews entirely?
I’ll second that. I listen to the podcast every week and absolutely love it, even though I never designed a game. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into making a podcast on such a regular schedule!
Thanks guys! I’ll pass your compliments on to Dirk as well.
Yes, great stuff. Its part of my regular stable of podcasts.
I went and tried to download GameDesignRoundtable podcasts, but I can’t figure out where the download links on those episode pages are. Sorry for being an idiot. I’m probably missing something obvious. How do I listen to those podcasts?
EDIT: Oops, I’m really sorry, I didn’t see that the site was using scripts that I had to allow through NoScripts. Once I did, it’s totally obvious. Apologies for the error.
Also not a podcast but I thought people here might be interested in a relatively new youtube channel called History Respawned. Someone named Bob gets together with a historian each episode to play a game for about 45 minutes and talk about how each game portrays the historic period in which it’s set. I’ve found it to be pretty interesting. So far he’s done Assassin’s Creed 4 and Shogun 2: Total war. He’s mentioned he wants to take a look at Europa Universalis 4 and Crusader Kings 2 as soon as he finds the relevant experts and I’m looking forward to those.

So I was right - Garnett is losing his job at Gamefly. The final(?) Weekend Confirmed came out last Friday and was a decent send off to the show. Since he doesn’t know where he’s going to end up location wise it’s unclear if he’ll be able to continue recording the podcast with everyone. Say what you will about Garnett, but I’ve always liked the show and will miss it if it’s gone forever. I’ve been listening that weekly for a LONG time in all of its incarnations.
Did Ariel make it onto the final show? I feel like she hasn’t been on Weekend Confirmed in forever. Are she and Garnett no longer together?
