A preface: obviously I have a different opinion from you guys, and you can’t accept this so I’ll try explain to everyone.
Robert: I’m from a working class redneck family in small town Pennsylvania, and just got my PhD this past week. I’ve seen a ton of really stupid people get their PhD’s the past few years, and knew plenty of stupid people back in small towns. I ‘get’ your background, and then some; I’ve seen and been in both cultures. You imply that I’m a stupid jackass, perhaps a psychopath (lacking that certain something)…I’m an uppity genius, huh…all this about someone you have zero background for or knowledge of…for not liking TAL…
Rather than being too empathic and being pained seeing some (NOT ALL) of those stories and how the people could have done things differently, you pick the option that makes you look as good as possible in comparison.

JD and Zengonzo: Again, I tried about a dozen, and while I can respect the production values, that’s about it. I don’t like the voice of the host particularly, the shows don’t grant me new insights on matters. I’m not like you, it doesn’t do it for me.
I’m not hurting anyone by not liking it. I’m not endangering you, I’m not judging you, I’m not prejudiced or anything here. I’ve never said that YOU are a bad person for not liking it. I gave my personal opinions on the matter.

Because you still haven’t given one example of what you are calling “stupid” in terms of the subject matter that TAL chooses to discuss. You’re just being argumentative and snarky.

So only news shows and videos about exciting new discoveries are what you watch? If things don’t have new insights on matters they aren’t worth your time.
It is fine you have an opinion, but people are taking issue with the way that you are stating your opinion. The way you are talking makes it seem like you are above all of us and coming down to listen to TAL is too much hassle.

Regarding This American Life - come on, guys, really? It’s far from universal, but they do love to cover their quirky minutia when they get the opportunity. Like that entire episode dedicated to what’s-his-face who’s writing the book about Antelopes or whatever and not doing radio anything right now. On a grant, no less. Or the entirely uncritical examination of how some anti-vax loony managed to infect not just her child but an entire neighborhood with the measles (though to be fair, the only way I would really have been satisfied with that story is if it had ended with the subject being stoned to death - bad health science these days is getting to be a bit of a hot topic with me). I can think of reasons why a person who caught the wrong stories on the wrong episodes would think that the program skewed towards the moronic. There’s no need to start setting dudes on fire, and there’s DEFINITELY no need to go starting up that old “Ph.Ds are arrogant dickmonsters” chestnut.
Regarding the actual subject of the actual thread: More ex-1Up staff have a podcast. The BitMob venture from Hsu et. al. (Demian Linn, other ex-1Up folks) appears to have spawned an audio thing, as was mentioned briefly earlier in the thread. Link here. They have an iTunes feed, apparently, but they also have the slowest site on the face of the Earth, so expect this link to take a while.
I would also like to say that dwolfe is getting piled on here. I think we can all walk away with our separate,different, and valid opinions.
Having never listened to the episode, I will now point to it as exactly the kind of precious, navel gazing, What White People Like, wankery, that annoys me about the show. Sometimes.
This episode, I actually listened to, and is where I realized I was expending more time being angry at TAL than enjoying it. This, along with an episode about little boys who want to be little girls and the parents that indulge them with absolutely no clarification as what, if anything, the children actually suffered from, nor what possible harm the parents could be doing to them. I don’t know anything about pre-adolecent gender confusion, it might be entirely valid, but the lack of any actual critical information on the subject by TAL leads me to believe it is a malady exclusively suffered by the children of overwrought parents who have crackpot therapists. Moreover I couldn’t imagine another show that would present both sets of parents in these cases as sympathetically as TAL did.
Sounds good, I always liked hearing from Hsu, back in the day.

i take it you don’t believe gender roles are a societal construct then? why do you automatically assume that a boy who feels he is a girl inside suffers from some type of ailment?
anyway, the reason these things you mentioned about TAL don’t bother me is because i’ve never seen the need of TAL to be critical. they are just presenting the stories and views of a variety of people. its up to the listener to make up their own minds about the topic.

I can, but if you scroll back a page or two, you can see I addressed this a bit already. :) I forgive you if you skipped past all the recent nonsense in this thread though.
Mostly it was us trying to communicate with each other “off mike”. But at the very least, everyone should have the Skype sounds muted. Hopefully we’ll get it better next time…
