Matt: I would agree that Gearbox partially failed on the loot front. They did not create a system like Diablo 2 that encourages players to trade for sets, MF, jewelry, etc, and over the long haul it’s why there is unlikely to be the same involvement from the Borderlands community. However, this doesn’t speak to Borderlands popularity or how successful it was for Gearbox. 2 million plus copies sold is a tremendous achievement for them, I expect.

That’s true even of the fixed rewards. I just started a new Soldier, and when I got to the Ladyfinger, it lacked a scope. High weapon zoom, but no scope. As a result it’s actually less effective as an early sniping weapon than the scoped repeater I picked up from the very first red chest at level 1.

For people saying the 360 controller is preferable for the PC version - fie, I say. I own the 360 version, but picked up the PC version in the Steam sale because I find shooters are always more precise with a mouse. Just a few levels demonstrated that to me, yet again. I can track charging skags with that scoped pistol, something I find very difficult with a gamepad’s joysticks. Firing while dodging spitter venom is also much, much easier.

There are places the UI is clumsy, but they’re trivial. Quest text seems to have no way to scroll with the mouse, which means I must move my hand to keyboard to use page up / page down. In all the critical areas, though, it seems to be just fine.

Bah, I didn’t pick it up the first time around which is why I removed the post.

My steam name is Morberis, add me if you want some Co-op.

I also have 2 copies left.

I don’t think anyone argued that the controller was more precise, did they?

I’ve seen several comments saying the 360 controller is somehow “better,” even for the PC version. No one said “more precise,” but they did recommend using a 360 gamepad. Having played both now, I can’t see why.

  • Gus

I certainly wasn’t saying a controller is better, I don’t even own one. I was just saying the PC UI is clunky. Outside of scrolling through lists the mouse and keyboard is fine. It just does get annoying when you’re comparing gear/selling etc.

I wasn’t thinking of you, specifically. I searched the thread, though, and couldn’t find what I remembered. Maybe I’m thinking of Batman.

The problem with the loot is actually a fairly common one – you get so enamored of your current weapon and the loot generation is so variable that it becomes difficult to find one that’s an improvement in all of the important areas you want. Yeah, that new sniper rifle has higher damage, but dammit, I don’t want to drop from a 2.4x scope down to 1.0. This revolver fires much faster than my old one, but only two bullets in the clip, WTF?

Those 2-shot revolvers are really annoying. But some of them have a reload speed that’s so high they might as well have an infinite clip. Uh, Cylinder, since revolvers don’t actually have clips…

  • Gus

Yep, my favourite Pestilent Defiler is only a 2 shot but the reload speed is very high.

Unlike, say, Left 4 Dead 2?

Note that the 2 million sales were prior to this big recent sale.

It’s one thing to decide you don’t like a game. After all, tastes vary. It’s another to keep pretending that it’s crappy even after it sells well and develops a relatively happy fanbase. There are plenty of big franchises in gaming I don’t particularly like; but I do respect that others have a valid difference of opinion.

I beat the game last night and loved it to death. That said, I have to admit that it got off to a slow start. It took me 10 hours or so before I really got into my groove with the game. But now I’m totally sold. Now I’m doing the DLC and working on other classes and so forth.

I’m really hoping a proper sequel is in the works.

I guess it’s a bit early to ask this, but Borderlands is really successful at the moment. Is there any chance of a Borderlands 2?

Yes, I can probably confirm that there’s a chance of a Borderlands 2 [laughs]. I mean, with anything, especially a new IP, if people want more and you can make more, and everybody can make money and do good business there, it obviously makes really good sense to do that. Obviously nothing so far is planned. We’re working on DLC. We haven’t really had any talks about a sequel, other than water cooler talk like, “Wouldn’t this be cool” kind of stuff.

But yeah, Borderlands is really exciting. Everyone here loves the franchise, and it seems like the public is really coming back with praise and love. So yeah, if everything makes sense, Borderlands 2 seems like a no-brainer to me.

From this interview.

There were also rumors of an MMO because of this.

I just bought the DLC for the PC version in the recent Steam sale. Since two of the packs contain a heinous Securom activation limit, and Steam automatically adds the DLC to your install, does that mean I’ve just screwed up my Borderlands in the future? Three installs isn’t many. What happens when I inevitably run against it?

Weird, deleted the whole thing and started the slow process of downloading it from scratch and it seems to be behaving fine now.
http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=85874 Slapped the config editor on to remove the uggo black borders, un-mangle the mouse aiming, and fix the FoV.

I’ve played an hour and can’t decide which character. I’m leaning toward Mordecai because I figure I can enjoy the challenge of aiming for headshots. I wasn’t too thrilled with the soldier’s assault rifle or Brick’s shotgun. I know you get better guns, but the mechanics of those didn’t grab me at all during the first few quests. Plus I seem to be stuck playing a lot of shooters and FPS-RPGs right now and I think I would get bored with more assault rifles and shotguns.

But the soldier’s turret sounds fun. Maybe old hat to some, but it reminds me of laying them down in Torchlight. No idea if I’d enjoy Mordecai’s bird or not.

It’s the soldier who has the shotguns skills (but they don’t really change the shotgun mechanics, besides giving them more damage or accuracy). I’m having a blast with the shotguns, I like moving and jumping around while shooting everyone, and I’m also getting the shield skills so I can survive going into the melee.

I should probably RTFM or something, but are certain weapon types innately better for certain classes (like does a soldier actually get a bonus for assault rifles?), or are the good weapon/class combinations just a result of the other ways the classes and their play-styles differentiate themselves?

edit: Oh, I guess belgerog just answered me while I was typing this.

As far as I’ve been able to tell there’s no inherent bonus to weapons based on your class, and the bias comes purely from each class’s skill tree picks applying only to a couple of weapon types for each class.
