I’ve seen a two shot zoom capable revolver that was green and around that level with 210-something damage per shot. I gave it to the hunter, who’s actually using revolvers.

I guess it’s a reflection of the extremes of AWESOME and WTF in the game itself, especially the PC version.
Some users on the Gearbox forum have figured out a fix: http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=80932&page=26

Wow, those guys are quick. That wasn’t even there when I checked earlier today. My modification just changes the font to a smaller one.
Awesome.

The phrase “the honeymoon has ended” is usually a highly negative one. It would appear most people are enjoying the game and acknowledging the incredibly irritating faults at the same time. I know I am - we got co-op working only by installing Tunggle, and the list of tweaks to ini files is as long as my arm. Despite all that we’ve had a great time in co-op and I’m enjoying the singleplayer far more than I thought I would.
So, yeah, it’s not really a case of QT3 turning on Borderlands.

Yeah, I had to resort to that stupid/ugly script font before this. The font size hack works great instead, without it looking ugly. Thanks!
I would say the core of the game is very good, and it is exactly what we wanted, the mix of FPS and Diablo, that promised Grial since the years of development of Hellgate London.
But the game lacks a bit of polish, some parts are like bolted a not very well integrated (say… vehicles), a few things should be redesigned, imo the balance between levels/difficulty/quets is not very well thought, with the level playing a role too high in the equation and the game being overall easy if you make too many sidequests, multiplayer can be under-satisfaying if the players levels are too different, etc.
I think it’s the typical game that will show how good can be in the second part.

What’s wrong with the vehicles?

Halo controls suck.
I enjoy the shooting as a sort of Fallout 3 Lite, and from my WoW addiction days I can appreciate the thrill of big numbers and shiny loot drops… but man such a wasted premise, this game might have the least engaging story of all time.
-The controls, will they are decent enough, aren’t exactly good ones.
-The interaction between vehicle and terrain sucks, the car usually stops with every little corner of stone or stupid peeble, instead of just jumping the obstacle or whatever. The wheels, suspesion and in general the whole car doesn’t behave like a car.
-The game itself is focused in moving and fighting on foot, vehicles are more at afterthought. There are only two or three quests thought for cars, and the fight against Mad Mel was pathetic, just a little round arena where you drive in circles again and again while firing with autolock.
-The maps themselves are too big to be walked on foot so you need cars… but in a car the maps feels a bit small. In other words you only use the car usually in shorts burts of 8-12 seconds of driving from point A to point B.

In other words, it’s like every other Gearbox game? Great potential, decent (but not great) execution.
At least it’s tweakable. Thank God for small favors…
(and, for the record, I’m loving the game – it’s something of an unpolished mess in certain respects, but it’s a great premise at the core. Now I need to go kill more skags.)
Heck, I forgot there was an autolock on the vehicle weaponry. No wonder I had trouble with Mad Mel. Well, not really trouble, I just decided to hunker down outside the arena and blow them away with my rocket launcher and sniper rifle rather than play bad car wars.
Yeah, I’d like to see more done with vehicles myself. Think about a whole 'nother level of customization and construction. More loots as well. I don’t find the controls very hard to work with but I do agree the interaction with terrain can be a bummer. Many objects I should just be bouncing over stop me dead in my tracks. As it is my vehicle is purely for transportation and the occasional amusement of running things over. In most firefights with enemies that use cover, for example, it’s too fragile. I do better on foot.
Played most of the weekend and I’m still having fun. The sense of repetition is starting to kick in but later than I thought it would. And even then the visceral fun of the weaponry and the combat keeps it going. The variety of loot is fun too.
Not only are there very rare orange weapons (so far I’ve only seen one, at a vendor, at level 27 but it wasn’t one I wanted) but the one alien weapon I’ve found is a blast. Literally. On paper it looks ridiculously weak but in practice…it would be my main weapon if it recharged faster. Think shotgun that fires five or six balls of electricity in a horizontal line. The actual damage isn’t great but if one procs you see double digit DOT damage, the Shock element wipes out shields, and sometimes - especially at close range - you’ll get all the balls to hit and several to proc at once!
The kicker is that it never runs out of ammo but it does shutdown after three shots until the charge can build back up.
I use it for boss fights, for packs of critters that charge me, for tearing up destructible objects that are quest requirements. I tend to favor my other weapons (pistols/sniper rifles) for intelligent foes as running out of juice with the artifact can be very bad when dealing with foes you may miss alot as they run around or take cover.
Then again…that’s what grenades are for. Damn, grenades can be fun too. I finally got around to experimenting…any other snipers love the Longbow style grenades as much as I do? Yes, Virginia, there’s more out there than just Transfusion!
No, thanks god it’s not that mediocre :P :P. It much more near of being a great game, with just a few bad corners and stuff to nitpick here and there, than a promising but ultimately just above average game.
Does anyone own both the 360 and PC versions? If so and you’ve played both, which version do you prefer and why? I’m getting caught up in the fun talk and feel compelled to hop on board! I’m just not sure which train to choose and if I can afford the ticket!
I prefer Atlas’ Grenade Rain type over anything else. I sub in Bouncing Betties and MIRV’s when they have higher damage, but a fireball rain is almost too good to pass up.
Transfusion is the one I use most but Longbows are great with snipers. You can aim using the rifle’s scope and then toss a Longbow. It flies out and then pop teleports to the exact spot you were looking at regardless of range! Usually, of course, setting off all sorts of toxic and explosive barrels nearby because that’s how I roll.
I have the Corrosive Rain and it does come in handy sometimes too. Especially when NPCs start running around and cross-infecting each other. Gotta love that.

I have a question about the Steam 4-pack. If I buy the 4-pack do I have to specify who gets the licenses at the time of purchase or can I decide at a later time?

Indeed, it’s been a long time since I have felt so strongly that I WANT a sequel for a game to happen.

You can decide later. When I bought the 4-pack I only had 3 of them accounted for.
Actually you could do yourself a favor and save $30 and buy Torchlight instead, then, later when GoGamer marks Borderlands down to it’s actual
value $30, you’ll have 2 games for the price of one.
Heh, this will sound weird. ( me being diehard PC gamer )
But, offhand I’d say you’d be better off with the X360 version.
As the PC version appears to be a late stage beta rather than an actual gold release version.
- Shitty UI and controls.
- No hotkey for health packs? Fucking really?
- Doesn’t seem to support alt-tabbing. Only did this once so far and crashed to desktop. ( releasing a PC game in 2009 that doesn’t “Play well with others” is just fucking idiotic. Seriously how many minutes of beta testing before they shoveled this turd out the door?)
