Some of the vendors were selling weapons, swords, daggers, etc. Every booth had a notice saying that anyone buying a weapon had to immediately take it out of the showroom.
Temple of Elemental Evil looked good. The LotR and EQ RTS games looked interchangeable. I asked both Vivendi and SOE to imagine neither game had the license attached to it and then tell me what was cool about the game, and both were stumped. Vivendi claimed that imagining the game didn’t have the LotR license was simply unimaginable – think Wally Shawn in Princess Bride saying, “Inconceivable!”. SOE just said they didn’t know because they weren’ t the official PR person, just someone who was showing the game.
There is still that Champions of Norrath Diablo type game that looks cool… and DnD Heroes looks nice too, are they at Gencon? and the Lotr/EQ RTS… we already have enough RTS games (and good ones too). If anything I wuold have loved an LotR Total War / Dynasty Warriors.
Hey, the RTS games looked ok to me, don’t get me wrong, but I wanted them to get me excited about them, and they couldn’t really come up with much.
The Xbox had a good GenCon show, such as it was for a show dominated by non-electronic gaming. Microsoft was there showing off Crimson Skies, Vivendi was showing a new Hunter game and a new Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance, Atari had a Magic game and D&D Heroes, and a few other games, and all were Xbox exclusives (though I can’t remember for sure about the Dark Alliance game).
D&D Heroes has four-player co-op and was kept busy by people wanting to play. It looks like Gauntlet but I think it has a bit more depth to it.
The Magic game on the Xbox was pretty frantic-looking. It’s all real-time, I don’t think there’s a deck but just spells each wizard can cast based on the cards.
Now why didn’t you save up all of these tidbits and slap them on the front page. I would have bought the excuse that you meant to have “GenCon is coming” up there.
YES!!! We need LOTR Dynasty Warriors! The whole thing is about the few heroic characters anyway, not about clever tactics and strategy. Get a powered-up Glamdring after hacking through 300 orcs! :D
