General video game discussion thread

Concord, the new ?hero shooter? from Sony. Not my genre, so apologies if I got that wrong.

Made for an amusing read. Here’s a teaser.

I’ve always thought there was something presumptuous about hero shooters. Building an entire game around a bunch of characters I’m expected to like purely on vibes is a big ask. Even BioWare, with its decades-long legacy of character-driven storytelling, recently got dinged for assuming players would immediately buy into Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s new party in the game’s misguided initial trailer.

Sure, Blizzard got away with it back in 2016. But putting aside the fact Blizzard gets away with a lot of things it probably shouldn’t, the developer had two big advantages with Overwatch. First, the hero shooter was a new and shiny concept following a decade of playing with toy guns as faceless military men (with the exception of Team Fortress 2, although that’s a slightly different kettle of fish). Second, Overwatch was a masterclass in mascot manufacture.

Can this be the thread where we pop up with random questions or to seek advice of some old game, and not have to create a new thread, nor revive a long-dead one?

If so, how’d you all handle the second big boss fight of Deus Ex: Human Revolution — the one where you go seeking answers from the news anchor lady who turns out to be an AI and then a boss attacks you (in videos I’ve seen she’s called the “Mercenary Leader” when you get the XP points for defeating her). My Adam Jensen is not built up at all for this kind of fight*, and I have no idea how to proceed. Use the quick menu to take lots of painkillers etc. and maybe grab the heavy rifle and ammo in that room right before the fight? I’ve been all stealth-focused and I don’t have Typhoon or anything.

*somehow I never caught on to the fact that I could buy Praxis kits with money in order to buy more augments, and now I’m stuck in this mission. I recently started up an old save from 2016 so my memory is fuzzy, but I don’t even know if I got to return to Detroit after the China mission before setting off on this one.

I haven’t played that game, but I’d guess asking for help on a specific game, you’re more likely to get eyeballs from people who have played it by resurrecting the thread for it.

Yeah, that’s more in line with Qt3 culture I guess. Over on ArsTechnica they have a “Random Gaming Thoughts/Questions” type thread that never dies from lack of use.

Anyway this approach is how I beat (kinda cheezed) that boss–learned if from CohhCarnage’s video below: basically dodge the first big attack and stun gun zap her from the side, then strafe around her while reloading and she recovers, then fire again, repeat a few times (maybe 6 or 7–I would have at least 10 rounds handy) till she’s dead. If you miss any shots she takes off and you should reload the save.

They are actually taking it off the market already, after two weeks. That must be the biggest videogame-fail ever…
