I only played a game or two of ES2 at launch. I think ES2 has a lot of cool sounding ideas, but I think I liked playing ES1 better.

You shouldn’t. Even if there were no ES2, ES1 was pretty vanilla and simple. It got famous cause it was one of the first 4X that came out after Civ5 allowed everyone to make 4X games, and it had a good UI and graphics and music. Also it was the first game to pioneer Steam Early Access and it made a great progress. Nowadays other 4X games have upped their game, including but not limited to ES2.
