GMT The Spanish Civil War (PBF)

2 brave Republican air squads support combat d, making it 1:1 odds.

Nationalist Combats were resolved in the following order:

A- 3-1 odds. Rolled a “2” , -1. net DRM. A “1” is 2/1 Result, 2 step attackers, 1 Defender loss. Santa Pau and Gistau Columns eliminated for the Attacker. The Defender is eliminated. Alonso Vega Column moves into Burgos.

North Combat Area Post-Operations:

B- 6-1 Odds shifted to the 5-1. Rolled a “5”. +1 Modifier to a “6”. 0/4 result. Defender eliminated with First Step loss. Attacker may advance into Huelva and then move 3 Breakthrough Hexes (3 unfulfilled steps, 1/2 Attacker’s movement is 3). Castejón Column moves to 1705.
C- 5-1 Odds shifted to the 4-1. Rolled a “2” . -1 Modifier to a “1”. 2/2 result. Defender eliminated with First Step loss. Attacker loses two steps, eliminating Vierna Column and reducing Ceuta Regulares. Attacker advances into 1505 and then moves 1 Breakthrough Hexes/MFs into 1606 (1 unfulfilled steps, 1/2 Attacker’s movement is 3). Ceuta Regulares moves to 1606.
E- 4-1 Odds. Rolled a “4”. 1/3 result. Defender eliminated with First Step loss. Attacker loses one step, reducing Sáenz de Buruaga Colonials. Both Attacking Columns have 2 Breakthrough MF’s due to 2 Unfulfilled step losses by Defender. Carranza Column moves to 1406, Sáenz de Buruaga moves into Sevilla.
D- 1-1 Odds. Rolled a “5”. No Modifier. Result is 2/1. All participants eliminated.

South Combat Area Post-Operations:

Franco%20%20Plane

Algunos huevos estaban rotos pero la tortilla se hizo (Some eggs were broken but the omelette got made).-General Franco to an aide, 23 August 1936.

Ok, so 6 Attacker casualties vs 3 defenders… Not bad, guys, not bad…

This is how things look when the Republican commanders look at the picture:

This turn the republicans drew

image

Which basically forces me to make an attack into Oviedo or forgot two Morale Points.

The Republicans look at Oviedo, look at their refueling bombers, and let the Morale points go. We might come to resent this later.

In the South the desperate Republicans try once more to delay reinforcements into Sevilla:

In Aragón, Republicans maneouver exploiting an opening and surround the troops there, who can’t be very happy.

And in the North, brave Asturians cut all supply to the troops in the center of the Peninsula:

Emboldened, the Republicans attack Huesca:

image

It’s a 10:3 attack (+1drm for the defender being OoS, -1drm for the defender being on a provincial capital, -1drm for rough terrain. Net drm -1).

Now, before attacking the Republican columns (not the division and brigades that will come later) need to make a motivational roll, and the firs two turns that roll has a -2drm.

Motivational roll is a 5. Minus 2 that’s a 3. That applies another -1drm to the roll, so it’s a roll on the 3:1 column with a net -2 drm.

And the attack is a 6. Minus 2, that’s a 4. That’s a 1/2 or one attackers and 2 defenders eliminated. Attacking units can advance into the hex and spend an additional MF.

Due top rough terrain (mountains, really) they can’t advance anymore on just one MF. And not all of them can advance into the hex anyways (6 units stacking limit), so this is how things stand:

Republicans now control 6 of the 10 morale levels in a city that they need to control to claim a sudden VIctory.

I have two more turns to enjoy this. Then the Nationalists arrive in force.

In the south a probable repeat of last turn train madness is likely to end badly for us, since now we have much fewer units active in the region.

In the South a probable repeat of last August’s railroad madness is likely to end badly for us, since now we have fewer units active in the region.-General José Riquelme y López Bago, newly-appointed Commander of the Ejército Popular Regular, to Republican Prime Minister Francisco Largo Caballero, September 2, 1936

Those words may prove prescient.

Some end of August cleanup:
D) END OF TURN PHASE
b) Fall of the Alcázar die roll (PB 16.1.1)
c) Check for removal of Ammo Shortage (15.16)- Ammo shortage in North Continues for Nationalists

The Alcázar falls on a “1”. The die roll is a “5”.

The Alcázar resists!

Markers moved forward and whatnot. Turn 2 (August, 1936) has ended. Coming soon: Turn 3 beginning with the Nationalist portion of the Mutual Administration Phase.

Turn 3 Begins-September, 1936

A) MUTUAL ADMINISTRATIVE PHASE (MAP)
(Nationalist, then Republican in all segments)
I. Event Chit Segment (6.0)
a) Draw chit
b) Add new chits (if appropriate)
II. General Mobilization Segment (Republican only, 7.10)
III. Resource Point and Reinforcement Segment
a) Withdrawals & Conversions
b) Receive RPs and Rebuild Units
c) Reinforcement Entry
IV. Strategic Movement Segment (11.0)
a) Sea Movement (11.5) & Paradrops (PB 17.5.5.12)
b) Rail movement
V. HQ and Reserve Formation Segment (12.1)
a) Flip all in-supply HQs to available side

We’ll go through the end of Nationalist III Segment. The The Republican atheists will go then,. Segment II, General Mobilization, cannot occur unless Republican Morale is 20 or less, which it is not. It is over 35.

So:
I. Event Chit Segment (6.0)
a) Draw chit
b) Add new chits (if appropriate)

The Nationalists drew:
Event 4: Nationalist RPs
This chit must be played when drawn. Add the number on the
chit to the current Nationalist RP total. These bonus RPs may be
used in the MAP of the current Game Turn.
1 RP added to the Nationalist total immediately, the total is now 1.

The Republicans drew:
Event 2: Durruti Dies
This chit must be played when drawn. The famous anarchist
leader Buenaventura Durruti, commander of the column of the
same name, dies in combat while trying to rally his men. Decrease
RML by one point.
Republican Morale is now 36.

On August 25, despite the best medical attention, Buenaventura Durruti died of wounds received at the Battle of Huesca.

Imitate the Hero of the People!

Now for Nationalist:
III. Resource Point and Reinforcement Segment
a) Withdrawals & Conversions
b) Receive RPs and Rebuild Units
c) Reinforcement Entry

There are no withdrawals or conversions.
The Nationalists receive 1 Resource Point giving them a total of 2. These are used to rebuild the García Iglesias Column and the Caso Column in Cadiz. The Bertomeu Column aarived in Cadiz as a reinforcement, and the Pujalte Column and the 3rd Tercio “Don Juan de Austria” of the Legión Española, both Colonial units, arrive there as well.

The delayed units are too many to relate. Let’s just say that between turn two and turn three delays there are FIVE Colonial Units and SIX standard Columns delayed. Two of those would arrive in Jaen/Granada, but NINE are due to the nonsense “offensive” put on my these militia mosquitoes in Sevilla and Cadiz Provinces. However…when things are cleared up…there will be a LOT of Nationalist columns, more than half of them colonial, arriving in one Turn, mad as hornets and ready to attack anything.

The Standard of the 3rd Tercio “Don Juan de Austria” of the Legión Española

Here is the Map at the end of Nationalist Resource Point and Reinforcement Segment. I now hand over to the President leading the godless criminals bent on destroying Spain.

This turn the Reuplican army is able to get the fleet out of stupor. We now can add 2 CF to any combat and support combats in the Mediterrean coast with a drm modifier…

image

Not going to be very helpful in the current situation.

Also, the military was informed that August’s glorious defense of Burgos didn’t happen. Apparently we got confused by out own propaganda (@Navaronegun applied a column shift he shouldn’t so the combat was really a 2/1 not a 1/0 ).

This turn we get a Northern Republican RP, that we use to rebuild the unit lost in Burgos, which raises again in Reinosa:

Also, we get an additional regular RP. Because we had one saved we now have a total of 2 RP. The situation in the south is dire, so we use both to rebuild these squads:

image

They deploy north of the Nationalist units, hoping to delay any breakthrough in the area.

Nationalist strategic move comes next!

Nationalist Strategic Movement Segment
IV. Strategic Movement Segment (11.0)
a) Sea Movement (11.5) & Paradrops (PB 17.5.5.12)
b) Rail movement

And again…(this feels like deja vu), since supply is checked for every unit of both sides at the moment of combat resolution and at the start of every…
• Strategic Movement Phase (A-IV);
• Operational Movement Phase (B-I and C-I);
• Exploitation Movement Phase (B-III and C-III); and
• End of Turn Phase (D-II-a).

The Nationalists have no sea movement capability this turn but have two rail points, which may move a division or two Brigade/Columns each.

In the South: The Caso Column rails from Cadiz to 1306. The Bertomeu Columns rails from Cadiz to 1507. Then the colonial Pujalte Column rails from Cadiz to 1608 (Osuna). Then, finally, the 3rd Tercio of La Legión rails to 1707.

The situation in the South after Nationalist Strategic Movement:

Veamos si están dispuestos a tirar la casa por la ventana (Let’s see if they are willing to throw the house out the window.)- General Yagüe to General Sáenz de Buruaga, Huelva, September 4, 1936

The Republican army sets up what they hope will be somewhat resilent defensive positions east of Cadiz. The delay strategy is officially over.

Turn 3 (September, 1936) Nationalist Operational Movement Phase

As supply checks are made at the beginning of each Operational Movement Phase, so now columns in 1705, 1606, 1607 (Sevilla), & 1406 (Jerez de la Frontera) are all in supply. Units shuffle around in tight spaces and end looking like this in the South:

In the North, and Aragon, there were minor moves (you see the arrows marking paths to final destinations) as various units OOS move half their movement to Towns (where they are allowed to move so as to remain in supply. One minor victory is that Soria (3114) is occupied. So after Nationalist Operational Movement, the map looks like this:

Combat declarations (all in the South Coming next).

After Breakthrough movements Nationalist Dispositions look like this:

Did you forget to roll for the fall of the Alcazar de Toledo at the end of last turn?

No, it held on a “5”.

Sadly, we can’t delay the NAtionals anymore.

The Republican army pivots into defense. No attacks are made this turn.

An opening allows a column to reach Medina del Campo. Republicans now control 7 out of 10 VP points needed for an automatic victory.

Medina del Campo has fallen, Prime Minister. Good, then it is over.–conversation between General José Riquelme y López Bago Commander of the Ejército Popular Regular and Republican Prime Minister Francisco Largo Caballero, September 29, 1936

End of September cleanup:
D) END OF TURN PHASE

c) Check for removal of Ammo Shortage (15.16)- Ammo shortage in North Continues for Nationalists

The Alcázar falls on a “1”. The die roll is a “4”.

The Alcázar holds!

Markers moved forward and suchlike. Turn 3 (September, 1936) has ended. Coming soon: Turn 4 beginning with the Nationalist portion of the Mutual Administration Phase.
