Gomorrah

Beautiful Italian film about an ugly subject: the Mafia in Naples. There are a number of interconnected stories that show how organized crime permeates every level of society. Personally, the story of the humble tailor under the thumb of a scummy Neapolitan boss was the strongest. It is on Netflix Instant right now, but I recommend the DVD or BD if it’s out. It reminds me of the one thing I always love about Italian cinema: the faces. Like Leonardo caricatures come to life.

Wait, how does the giant flying turtle fit into this?

Ugh, I saw this when it was in theaters and thought it was just insufferable.

You’re thinking of Gamera. The movie is about these guys.

Loved this film, one of the best I’ve seen in years. I recommend the Criterion edition, the transfer is gorgeous.

That’s what Netflix has.
