The promotion this weekend is for the Gabriel Knight Collection. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to pick these up even though I own the disks. The second and third games are all time favourites of mine. They are not perfect, but have compelling stories that mix history and the supernatural.
The visuals don’t really hold up. The 3D in the third game is very dated, and the FMV in the second game is very low resolution/compressed. The first game… is very retro.
Well freaking finally, I was waiting for that ever since release of the first. Boughted !
Thank the maker! I can finally play 2 and 3! Plus #1 with digital sound!
I always thought that it was interesting how the GK series changed with the times, from classic adventure to FMV adventure to 3D adventure, and how each of the games is among the best within it’s own sub-genre. I’m buying this.

Get the complete GK collection for 12.57…or less. What’s the ‘or less’ part about on their ad? Is there some super secret coupon to use? In my cart it comes to a total of 12.57 exactly.
FYI: The cat hair moustache of Old Man Murray fame was in GK4. This may or may not be relevant to your purchase.
Here’s the relevant quote from GOG:
So for me, since I already own GK1 from GOG, I get a price of $8.38 if I buy the other two. That’s a pretty cool feature, especially compared to Steam, where if you already own something that’s part of a package there’s no way to exclude it and maintain the discount, or even gift the redundant copy.

So they mean if you already own one or two of the games then it would cost less? Guess that makes sense in a way but made me think I was somehow missing a further discount.
Yay. Jane Jensen’s new game also has a (terrible) new website here.

Man, I’ve got to get a bigger hard drive. I’d really like to replay the Gabriel Knight games.

This is being discussed in the Bargain Thread, but I figured it was more appropriate here.
I love I-War. It’s been years since I’ve played it, but it still stands out in my mind as the thinking man’s space shooter. Many of the missions were very puzzle-like, but incredibly satisfying once you figured out what you needed to do.
I also love that the best combat strategy in the game is displayed to you in the opening cinematic.
I never really got into I-War 2 - it was really freaking hard at first, and there were a ton of other games at the same time.
Oohhh, I-War, one of my favorite space sims. Such an excellent game with, IMO, the best opening cinematic I’ve ever seen in any game. Instant purchase for me. I’ve tried to get into I-War 2, but it seems a bit…puzzle like for me, and it kinda got annoying. I do need to revisit it though and finish it.

…the Trouble with Gunstars.
Hahahahaha, true enough, though I’d kill for a Last Starfighter sim of some sort.
Yes! Ever since I heard I-War had Newtonian physics I’ve been wanting to try it. I just hope my twist rudder stops acting weirdly.

One of my favorite parts of the game where the physics come into play is when you take damage, and some of the systems are disabled temporarily. Your ship has a very powerful ventral thruster, and if that is knocked offline, you have to adjust your tactics to compensate.
I have a very distinct memory of a firefight in I-War where things were going great until I was nailed by something, and lost all helm control. The stick was dead, and I was just there in space, rotating helplessly while I tried to prioritize repair order on the engineering screen.

God, why? Why do people continue to call this terrible, TERRIBLE opening as one of the finest?
I actually purchased I-War on the cheap just to see this opening. That ultra macho president is just cringe worthy. There’s no meaning, depth, drama, mystery or even particularly interesting visuals. It’s simply long.
Quake II has a good intro, Baldur’s Gate has a good intro, Dawn of War has a good intro. All serve to either establish background and setting, a mystery, or simply establish the atmosphere of the world you’re being drawn into. The I-War intro was just bad drama.
For my next act, I will explain why the Mech Warrior 2 intro isn’t really any good either.
Compare it to what else was available at the time.
Pfft, Quitch, it still holds a place in my heart as one of the best. Totally loved it. Those other games you mentioned have good intro’s too of course, but ahhh…I-War…
