We in this thread can’t know if it worked, because the point of a PR stunt is to make headlines and get people to find out about your product who had never heard of it before. This seems to have been all over the internet, and when all those same blogs posted about how they were back up and had Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment for sale, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that translated into some number of new customers for them.

I had the exact same issue. Running in a window seemed to fix it.

The forums had nothing on point sadly. As to running it in a window, when I check Properties it says it IS running in a window (I’ve tried “normal”, “minimized” and “maximized”) yet the game displays fullscreen. Is there a way to force it to run in an actual window?

I’ll have to check my settings when I get home, but I think I selected a slightly lower resolution too, like 1440x900 instead of 1920x1080.

There is a pretty good sale right now with 50% off for some pretty good games

Arcanum for 3 bucks? Picked it up eventhough I have retail already. The convenience…

Yeah, I finally got Jagged Alliance 2 and Psychonauts at prices I liked. :) Good sale for the n00bs.

Thanks, I’m pretty interested in arcanum, jagged 2 and psychonauts of those listed games.

those three are stellar games. among the best (if not the best) in their respective genres.

Yeah, I just got Jagged Alliance 2 and downloaded the 1.13 mod so it can run in windowed mode. Been meaning to try the game out for years.

I love JA2 but it’s one of those games that I play and do really great at until suddenly all my guys get cut down in a hail of gunfire no matter what I do.

I kind of envy those playing JA2 for the first time. It’s probably my most played game next to EQ, I freaking love it.

I picked up Arcanum as I’ve always wanted to play it, it’s going to be awhile though. So much stuff to play…

Why would it? There’s no better DD service. There’s not even a half-as-good DD service.

Now I just need a little price cut on baldurs gate, planescape and giants as I already have disc versions of those, but a digital backup might be nice + all the bonusses that come with the gog version.

Well, those playing it their first time might not have the 1.13 + AIM + NAS + HAM + WF + STOMP mod installed, and in that regard I pity the fool.

So any particular advice or suggestions for someone going into JA2 pretty much blind? I have 1.13, but not those other things you mentioned. When I downloaded 1.13, I saw everyone saying to turn off the Drassen counterattack, but that’s the only setting I’ve played with so far.

Hah! When I got my JA2 last year I installed 1.13 and checked the Bear’s Pit forums. And yes, despite my liking older games only 50% of the time when I play them recently, I really liked JA2.

What are those and where can I get them? I’ve only ever played vanilla JA2.

The Bear’s Pit forums, as belgerog mentioned, are the hub and lifeblood of Jagged Alliance 2 modding.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to link to a specific forum thread, it didn’t work for most people (though it worked for me). Here’s the link to the thread with the mod that I’m currently using.

Bear’s Pit Community -> Forums -> JA2 v1.13 Modders HQ -> v1.13 Mod General Discussion -> Single Click Installers STOMP + HAM + WF + AIM (+NAS)

The hottest new SCIs (single-click installers) seem to be made by Tai, who has his own thread on the same forum. It is also possible to download using SVN and/or combine mods on your own, but that’s pretty power-user. Even the “single-click” installers require some knowledge to use, though the forum users are pretty helpful with technical questions.

Because Bear’s Pit speaks in its own lingo of abbreviations, I’ll break down a few of the mods as I understand them.

v1.13 - the most popular base mod for JA2. It adds a more realistic inventory system, true automatic fire on guns, some balance changes, high-res support (kinda), and various other tweaks. They have rolled HAM (Headrock’s Assorted Modifications) into the base code, which most notably has a system for suppression fire.

AIM - Alpha Item Mod. This one is relatively new and I’m not entirely sure what it does.

NAS - New attachment system. Vanilla JA2 limits each gun to four attachments, this mod creates attachment hardpoints in all the areas that one would realistically expect being able to attach or swap out components, and then some. Attachments are, of course, restricted to hardpoints where they would actually fit, i.e. no silencers hanging off the end of a magazine.

WF - Wildfire. This is a mod that changes maps and mercs from basic JA2. It later went retail, but can still be enjoyed as a mod. It’s not necessarily better, though I like the new maps because they feature more close quarters for ambushing. The main perk is really just having variety when you’ve played the basic JA2 campaign to death.

STOMP - Sandro’s Trait and Other Modifications Project. I cannot bring myself to play Jagged Alliance 2 without this mod anymore (much like 1.13). It revamps the trait and personality systems into more transparent mechanics with greater possible variety and tighter character focus. If you want a character who runs fast, specializes in rifles, and punches people in the face, you can do that. Speaking of which, in conjunction with the traits, it also improves JA2’s close combat (fisticuffs and melee weapons) and AI. Vanilla JA2 close combat is kind of . . . not useful.

All the trait values are externalized into an .ini file, so you can tweak them to your liking as you get a better feel for the game. Personally, I gave close combat specialties a huge defensive buff, since modern soldiers are more likely to have to defend themselves in close quarters than attack with fists and knives. It doesn’t solve the issue of point blank shooting, but nothing’s perfect.

IoV - Don’t know what this mod is either. I haven’t found a version with STOMP, so for me it’s a non-issue atm.

So yeah, it sounds complicated, it is. That said, I truly think most of these mods (except Wildfire) add logical features to JA2 without fundamentally changing its flavor. If you have any questions, Bear Pit and/or myself can probably help.

Wow, that’s an awesome amount of info, and very helpful to boot! Thanks Cl_Flushentityhero! I’ll install the game this weekend and give these a whirl. :)

I picked up Arcanum and Under a Killing Moon since I haven’t played them yet. I’m getting to the point of, for the first time, having games piling up that I probably won’t get to for a long time. Too cheap to pass up these, though.

Games like Myst, The Longest Journey, and Syberia are all among my favorite games of all time, but there’s no point in me rebuying them while I’m this far behind in play time. Still, I’d recommend them if anyone is looking for some good Adventure genre games.
