Yeah, there’s an extra “world.” It’s short, but pretty cool.

Surprise release!
Icewind Dale Complete for $9.99!!!
Brilliant! Loved the IWD game so much. Nothing better than creating your own party for some serious dungeon delving regardless of lack of storyline. Can’t wait til IWD2 since I never played it.
GOG is really rocking the releases lately.

so IWD is more dungeon delving and less storyline stuff? I’m not familiar with the series.
I absolutely loved Icewind Dale. It really captured the flavor of the old Gold Box games, which I cut my gaming teeth on.
Can’t wait to play this over the winter.
Basically yes, but there is a story there that’s solid and a setting that is fantastically realized. The combat in Icewind Dale also marks the high point for the IE engine.
Anyway, Icewind Dale is my favorite IE game and I’m so glad that it finally came to GOG.
I really liked IWD as a straight-up dungeon crawl.
Good price for a great game with expansion on the IWD package. I’m actually replaying IWD2 right now in little snippets here and there as time permits. Great dungeon delve games using the excellent Baldur’s Gate style engine but with less focus on overall story and more focus on the fighting, exploring and looting. There is still a plot, and it’s not a bad one at all, it’s just not the epic story that BG/BG2 offered. The fights are the thing in IWD and IWD2, and they can be tough. Playing IWD2 again I’ve quickly remembered how often I would lose a fight and have to reload and rethink the strategy. These games really make you consider what spells to have memorized and what weapons and tactics to use with each encounter. Good stuff.
Yup. If you can get together and play it with friends at a LAN, that’s the best way to enjoy Icewind Dale. You can skip most conversations and don’t need to worry too much about the story. Plus the tactical possibilities of what happens in combat are so much more exciting when other people are controlling other party members instead of you.
For example, if one of your mages is about to cast a spell that forms a beam between him/her and the enemy, it’s one thing to pause the game and tell all other team members to get out of the way by manually giving them all orders. It’s another thing to shout it out to your friends at the LAN to get out of the way, and then watch everything become super-unpredictable when the enemy being “beamed” starts running around, getting other people caught in the beam. Believe me, it’s nowhere near as fun when you’re controlling it all yourself, just giving orders for the team, rather than people screaming and scrambling in the apartment.

I miss the Gold Box games and the ability to precisely tactically position your fireball /area of effect spell so it just singes the front line fighters nose and wipes out a mass of goblins and orcs. AoE spells in the infinity engine are so annoying for the above reasons.
That said, I wonder if the new hasbro deal gives them the Gold Box / SSI back catalogue as well? Potentially not as according to wikipedia, SSI is somewhere inside Ubisoft now.
I could see a pack of 5-6 gold box games selling well at $9.95
Hell, I could see some single Gold Box games selling well at $4.99. And I’d love to see some of the Eye of the Beholder games up there, too. I loved those.

When will they stop teasing and just give us BG2.

Haven’t noticed the pattern yet?
oh god, I love the IWD Artwork, the original character portaits where my favorites. I am still in the morgue in Planescape though… ohhh damn backlog!
When you and the rest of the games industry stop being so serious! All the teasing is good for you, apparently.
Are there any required/recommended mods for IWD? Widescreen, graphics update, anything like that?
I recall IWD having an excellent soundtrack. I’m tempted to grab the GOG version just for access to that. (Plus, I think I traded away my physical copy of IWD a while back.)
I never got around to IWD2, so I’m looking forward to that GOG release.
In some ways I found Icewind Dale to be my favorite of the Black Isle games because of its theme alone. The remote villages surrounded by the savage climate were captured beautifully in both the artistry and music. Sure, there isn’t much story to be had, but what’s there felt like a real, gritty D&D adventure as you slogged through dungeon after dungeon acquiring bigger and better loot. Highly recommended.
Icewind Dale 2 actually adapted some 3e game systems, so it was sort of a 2.5e D&D. There were feats and skills and I want to say a sorcerer class.
