Are you sure you aren’t referring to Fantasy Wars instead?
Because FW kinda had this “puzzle” feel about it, imo, while it wasn’t remotely as bad in Fantasy General.
You could (and had to) focus your research efforts accordingly to avoid major road bumps, but if you did so, things were mostly going smooth.
I really liked FG.

G.O.G. is giving a freebie to beta users as a thanks (apology?) after the site closure: Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games.
Nice move. It appeared automatically on my gog game shelf. And they’re offering an alternative freebie to those who already have this, not sure what that one is.
Agreed, nice move. I’m not sure I’ll ever fire it up, but it’s not a bad piece to go on my virtual shelf.
It gave me a choice of Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, Strategic Command: European Theatre, Battle Chess, and a handful of different pinball games. Apparently other people have seen more choices, but I might have already had those. Edit: Actually, it seems to allow any other Strategy First game.

All is forgiven. Thank you, GOG team.
I cannot get ToEE to launch. I keep getting the cannot find ToEE.exe error. I’ve removed AVG and turned-off Microsoft Security Essentials, deleted ToEE and reinstalled several times, the last time with a fresh download.
Anyone have any ideas?
Motherfucker. Poking around, I found an >exe called ToEE3. Renamed it and everything works. What the fuck, man.

You had me at “Planescape: Torment” :)

I’m running the Co8 patch, so using their launcher, but I was also getting that error. I set ToEE.exe to run as administrator and it worked fine afterwards.
Yes, but until I renamed it, I did not have a “ToEE.exe” to run as administrator.
Propably a virus scanner interfering, as for some reason they some times identify toee.exe as a trojan and put it in quarantine.
I had all my virus scanners disabled.

The entire Strategy First collection is 50% off so I was perusing the game list. One game struck me as a turn based strategy game I missed: Strategic Command: European Theater. I tried googling up some reviews but all the links were dead. Anyone have impressions of this game? Worth playing if you are a turn based strategy guy?

I found a review written by Tom for Gamespot giving the game a 7.2. Since I know that Tom gives real numbers, not the 7-9 scale, that’s actually a decent score. I’m pretty tempted…
That’s a nice way to say “we’re sorry” as well as “thank you”. Deadly Games was the first JA game I ever played, so it’s a great choice, IMO. I wonder if one can still download maps and such for it…

I would have sprung for Strategic Command, but Tom seemed to suggest that the AI wasn’t very good, so I ended up bailing on it since I have enough WW2 strategic level games with lousy AI. I also considered Dark Star One, but I have that on Steam already, so I went with Port Royale 2 to complete my Port Royale collection on GOG.

Short form: not worth it. Clever idea, but they’re so committed to repeating what happened in world war II that the original setup is “gamed” a bit to prevent you from trying anything strategically interesting. e.g., as Germany, you don’t really have a “Don’t attack the Soviet Union, dumbass” choice - if you try that, Russia eventually declares war on you anyway.
Oooooh…Deadly Games. Not bad, not bad. Maybe grab this and make a couple of maps just for grins.

I’m not sure how it compares to PG (never played it) but FG punishes you heavily for specializing too much in one troop type. For instance, if you bump your cavalry research up by several points and get tons of cavalry, pretty soon you will start seeing elite LVL 5 troops everywhere. This has the nasty effect of rendering all your non-cavalry units useless because they are terribly outmatched. Sucks when he deploys a bunch of anti-cavalry units and you literally have no way of killing them without taking horrendous losses.
And yeah, the scenarios were designed so the maximum number of turns was juuust enough to complete it. If you wanted to make an army with lots of slow siege engines and spell casters, well tough.
I’d forgotten how much of an adventure game Planescape: Torment was. After getting through the Tenement, I’ve put in a few hours with zero combat, except against random encounters against some pissed off Harkonium guys. I love the game, but the pacing between combat and non-combat parts does seem slightly off.
I had to double check that this wasn’t an old thread that I had posted in. I swear I’ve posted that exact same sentence before. I could have been mistaken if I’d give it more of a chance but the game just felt wrong out of the box.

Be careful, they’ll laugh at you for saying that here.
