If I can add onto Rock8man’s query -
For those who have played Haegemonia in the last few years, how does it stack up compared to a more modern game like Sins of a Solar Empire?

It’s not a serious strategy game, if it the one I’m thinking of. There was a series of story driven space strategy games years ago, and I think this was the last one. It’s entertaining, but not replayable and not that strategic. More like an adventure or light RPG that you interact with through 4x conventions instead of by walking around talking to people. If it’s the game I think it is.

IWD continues to be too frustrating to actually be enjoyable. You’ll have a decent yet potentially dangerous dungeon which will be capped off by some fight which is damn near impossible to defeat.
Are you using potions Eric P? Like I posted a while back, the game seemed really hard until we realized that the potions were there for us to use regularly. Not as regularly as in Diablo 2, of course, but close. You can buy a lot of potions, use them all, and then buy more from the shop. And the shops do eventually re-stock potions after a while. So you just have to be careful not to get caught in a situation where you’ve cleaned out the shops and have no potions left to use in a particularly tough fight.
Definitely use potions though. Lots of potions. Sometimes it’s better to use multiple potions on the same party member and make them invincible and strong, rather than have everyone in the party drink something. The invincible strong one can then take point and go nuts while everyone else provides support.

i’ll give it a shot, but i’m abstaining from the game for now. I’m in the first temple where there’s a huge amount of undead and my party gets overwhelmed far too quickly for me to really do much good.
Time to give ToEE a shot
Clerics and Paladins are your friend.
That doesn’t sound much like Haegemonia. At least not if you played past the initial Earth campaign which was the extended hand-holding tutorial. It starts off in a fairly basic manner but once you get into the Mars campaign it turns into Homeworld / Imperium Galactica type of strategy 4x hybrid. Of course it’s the IG / IG2 developers so that’s what you’d expect. The Mars campaign particularly Episode 2 onwards turns into a pretty tough strategy game from what I remember playing of it. The only real downside, and the reason I stopped playing it, was it’s no short game - it was taking several hours to play each scenario, and gone are the days when I had time for that even over several sesssions. Great game though, very tactical.
I know it’s not the present topic of discussion, but I bought the big Might and Magic package from Gog. I figured I’d start with M&M1, I remember watching my brothers play it as a kid. I figure I’m an RPG vet, how hard can it be? So I roll up characters and go running out into the hallway where a pack of poltergeists slaughter my whole party…
Hahahha epic fail!!

I loved Haegemonia - really brilliant game, and one of the few that starts you out as smalltime commander, then gives you command of bigger fleet, easing you into the role of Galactic Conquistador!
Might and Magic 1 was the first RPG I played (on the Mac, about 21 years ago) and it obsessed me for a while.
yet another reason why gog.com is the best games shop in the whole interwebz and CDProjekt my favourite company #1

Wow. She won the entire GOG catalog. Retro gamer heaven.
That is amazing.
In other news, I finally snagged the Age of Wonders soundtracks. Damn the soundtrack to AOW1 is GOOD…I’d forgotten how awesome it is.

One of these days I hope they release Domark’s Absolute Zero. Did anyone else play that game, may have had some rough edges and the difficulty ramped up way too high for me near the end with the massive relief armada mission but boy was it fun back in the late 90s.
Best planets in any 4X that I can remember.
