Well - its been a looong time since I played that particular game, but I do remember the minigames were damn annoying - and if they were optional, and still allowed me to do all the things the game offers, then no, I didnt know that.
The first game had me through and through though, the re-release not at all.

Did you play Space Rangers 2? That might hit the spot for you.
I also found the new Pirates! interface very sluggish and awkward on the PC … It felt as though every action took just a little too long, clicking just a bit too soft.
Altogether, I couldn’t get the enthusiasm going. Felt like I’d rather be playing Patrician.
Wish they’d done a more straight update.
For myself, I don’t have any problem with dancing being a minigame - I like the detail of ancillary activities in just about any sim.
But the execution was a bit boring.
Hell yes it would. I still load that game up every so often. Can’t believe it originally sold for $13.

While we are still talking about games we want to have on GoG, I’d love Missionforce: Cyberstorm and it’s sequel.
Oh hell yes. I still play those games regularly.
Which basically killed The Software Refinery, designers of the game. Interplay thought it was a budget release based on something Gremlin (the European publisher) said, or did, or something.
Shame. There was a ton of aftermarket support on this game, even one of the game designers popped in a couple of years after it was released to hand over an unofficial patch. Not sure where the community is with it now.
And to think I only gave this game 3 stars in CGW back in the day.
That is so weird. Such a shame, as it was such a wonderfully interesting and diverse game that totally deserved more support, marketing and recognition.
As an alternative view, I was also a Car Wars geek, and I loved Autoduel. I think if you were expecting Autoduel to be Car Wars on a computer, you were bound to be disappointed, because Autoduel was a (relatively) simple action game, and not at all trying to be a realistic simulation. Taken on its own merits, though, I think Autoduel was a fantastic game, with a great dynamic mission system. Think Privateer with cars.

Yeah, that was the problem. I wanted grognardy and I got “pew-pew-pew” Ultima IV.

This.
It was savy enough to throw in things like doing damage to drivers, weapons that reduced your chance for salvage. There was a difference in feel of the various types of weapons. The three attributes (driving, gunnery, salvage) had a huge impact on your player’s performance and character development. Yes, all of the mechanics were simplified relative to the table top version. But it was still an elegant collection of mechanics.
It was a very satisfying game, IMO.

Man, I was expecting a lot more Baldur’s Gate 2 discussion than this.

The silence is more telling.
Duhn-duh-DUHN!!!
Seriously, what’s to discuss? It’s a great game, and I’m sure many people were hoping that GoG would get it. Now they have.

The sequel? Dear God, why?
The sequel isn’t a really BAD game, it’s just not as good as the stellar original. I liked the variety found in the corporations in the second game, personally.
