Here’s why I never got far in BG2: I suck at the combat. After the first dungeon, when the world opens up, I would take a few ordinary quests, get into battles and have my ass handed to me. I would try micromanaging by pausing constantly, or go to the other extreme with no pausing and see if the AI scripts fared better, all to no avail. My character was a weak-ass mage, and even though I kept him well defended he wouldn’t last long. Maybe I just happened to have chosen a few too-tough quests. Didn’t want to resort to that difficulty slider.

I did play about half of BG1 (until I got bored with storyline) and most of PS:T, so I have had some success with Infinity Engine combat mechanics. But for some reason I had real difficulty getting far in BG2combat. This was several years ago. Maybe its time for another go at it. Its tempting with the GoG release.

I wouldn’t be able to create my party in this game without first refreshing my memory on how 2nd edition style dual classing and multi classing works. I know the shelf where that 2nd ed rulebook is. Opening that up would be like an Archaeologist opening up some ancient tome.

Urge to install BG rising… but its such a huge time commitment…

I used easyTUTU and everything works fine so far. Just got out of Candlekeep in BG1 with my BG2 Archer.

I pretty much threw the sequel in because if they put the first one up they might as well do the second as well. I’m sure I’d buy it as well since I only ever played my brothers copy of the sequel and never long enough to feel like I was giving it enough of a chance. Maybe I played it enough to know it wasn’t worth it, I don’t know.

Easy, Baldur’s Gate 2.

If you don’t do the opening you’re really going to miss out on seeing some of the elements of Irenicus’'s personality. What’s more, it’s not really that bad unless you’re REPLAYING the game, I think as an opening dungeon it sets the mood perfectly.

Skipping it on your first play through would be a huge mistake.

News from Eurogamer (can’t link it yet): GOG will sell The Witcher 2, DRM-free.

And here is that link:

So, as to be expected, GOG finally takes the step towards being a competitor to the other digital distributors? Thats pretty damn cool! I really like GOG and the way they do business, so this is great news to me!

Nicely done, GOG! Of course, they’re selling their own game, but they have to start from somewhere, right?

D’oh - I’d forgotten about that… But yeah, its a very nice start!

Obviously the next step. I hope GOG is wildly successful.

Where do I pay?

CDP is again proving to be most customer friendly and courageous game company. Now I just hope Witcher 2 is super successful and sends message to other idiot publishers that DRM is not really a way to go.

Though I am probably not going to help it, since I will be getting nice retail Collector’s Edition.

Wait, so does this mean that they were unsuccessful in finding a publisher for The Witcher 2 and are self-publishing instead? I hope that doesn’t mean a weak retail presence in places like Walmart and therefore a poor game launch before the Witcher 2 even gets a fair shot.

OTOH, if GoG.com is what’s successful enough to give CD Projeckt the capital to keep working on the game without a publisher, that’s pretty cool. I hope it continues to be successful for them. I just hope publishers don’t view it as competition now and start not granting GoG licenses because of that perception.

That CE is unusual, but cool. It’s also $130 from I’ve read, so I’ll pass.

It’s being published by Atari in the US and CD Projekt in Europe.

As for your fears, could you find The Orange Box in stores when it came out?

Most definitely. It was distributed by EA right? It was everywhere.

Indeed, the point being it was a set of Steam games that were sold online as well as in stores. I somehow doubt you’ll have a hard time coming across a retail copy of Witcher 2 when it releases.
