You just have to play that encounter -very- carefully. It’s hard. Really hard. Especially that early in the game. But there’s no magic out.

There’s quite a bit of that, which is one of the many reasons I’m not all that in love with the first BG.

Well dang. I’m not a big fan of those. Would you recommend skipping right to BG2?

Yes. Turning the snark up to 11, I’d actually recommend skipping right to Icewind Dale. But BG2 is miles better than BG.

Sorry for the Twitter post, but I just realized I bought Gothic 2 Gold from the holiday sale instead of pre-ordering The Witcher 2 and getting it for free. Oops.

Besides the big name rpgs like Baldur’s Gate and the rest of the Bioware games, what are some good older party based rpgs that are good on GoG?

I have been enjoying Baldur’s Gate all day. I never played it when it first came out, playing the second one based on hype but never once making it out of that horrible horrible opening dungeon, to the “joys” of the game series were well lost on me. BG has a far better opening, though I loathe the evil characters that get thrown into the party early on. if i didn’t need their muscle i’d have dumped them long before i actually did.

I’m putting together my list of games to get from GoG and I got most of it narrow down except for one thing. I’m debating getting icewind dale 1, 2, or temple of elemental evil. I’m looking for a good rpg that lets me create my own custom party sort of like the Etrian Odyssey series on the DS which was based on older CRPGs.

All 3 of those allow that. Do you like lots of phat loot (IWD) or more tactical options (ToEE)?

That’s always a tough choice :) I think I would go for more tactical options as I like party based rpgs that let me have the authority for developing my own custom group and whatever tactics I can come up with.

Eh, ID1 & 2 don’t so much have a loot advantage over ToEE. It’s really that ToEE spans character levels 1-10. You’ll almost certainly hit the cap before finishing (not to worry; you can keep making items and put xp gain to work). You’ll still see a crap load of loot. But you won’t be seeing +5 items or anything like that.

I can’t recall the level cap in Icewind Dale. I’m not sure there was one, and the expansions certainly added more content. Icewind Dale 2 had high level parties as well. The higher level content means more and more spectacular loots, of course. If you are into that sort of thing.

I bought a few games during the sale, but I’m having a hard time downloading them. I’m fed up with the way GOG deals with downloads. The files are too big for me to download via Firefox, and to be fair the GOG downloader is a buggy piece of shit… I keep getting errors, and the 1.5 Gb Icewindale complete I just downloaded after needing a few restarts of the program is corrupted, so I’ll have to download it again… sigh. I hope I won’t have the same problems with Planescape (1Gb) and Sanitarium (1.3 Gb).

That was okay when most of GOG games were around 500 meg, but they’re getting bigger. Weren’t they supposed to get a better download support when the site was relaunched ?

I haven’t used a third party download manager in ages, do they still make those ?

I download all my games (80+) through Firefox and never had a corrupted download ? Why cannot you use it?

As for their downloader, afaik they are not officialy supporting it right now, because they are working on new version.I never had to use it anyway though.

My connection isn’t that fast, and the downloads on Firefox tend to fail more often than not. So for larger files it’s not exactly worth it.

Maybe it’s because I play most GOG games on the laptop, so I download them via an arguably shitty wifi connection. And then I sometime close the laptop to move it around the flat, so it’s not the best condition.

I guess I’ve been spoiled by Steam’s ease of use… I pretty much expect a download to work seamlessly on the background.

Eventually, I’ll get the games downloaded, but it’s not a great customer experience imho.

I’m very happy with the service. Never had an issue with the downloader myself, seemed pretty fast and the games all ran just dandy without an issue. Well except for Sanitarium, it has some odd graphical glitches but is playable nonetheless.

Trying an add-on for Firefox like DownloadThemAll! which will support resuming. This might improve things for you.

  1. I dont think i had an interrupted download from GOG.
  2. Steam isn’t exactly “download seamlessly on the background”. Downloads stall from time to time.

YMMV, I guess I don’t have much luck with the service, and I’m stuck with a subpar connection because I live in one of the shittiest parts of Paris.

But I’ve had far more problems downloading the 20 or so GOG games I own than the 150 + I’ve got on Steam.

I needed to rant. :)

DownThemAll! is the cure for what ails you.

Go with IWD 1. It’s focused, well paced, challenging but not frustratingly so, has an amazing soundtrack and some memorable “dungeons”.

IWD 2 is a little all over the place when it comes to pacing - there are a few puzzle areas that aren’t well implemented and they really kill the pace and make the game drag a bit.

I never got far in TOEE but it has one of the best combat systems in an RPG in the short time I played it. It also has one of the dullest game openings ever. Never visit Homlet. Ever.

I’ve heard good things about Betrayal at Krondor. And the Might and Magic 1-6 bundle is a steal - the first couple are probably a bit more primitive than most people would want to deal with, but 3 onwards have plenty of RPG goodness. I’m particularly fond of the 4/5 combination, each of which were a full sized RPG on their own, but installed together they combine to form the World of Xeen, with transport points between the two game maps and quests that can only be completed with access to both maps. VI I personally never got into due to a major engine/gameplay change that kind of put me off, but I know a lot of people swear by it.
