Oooohhh, never played this one, but always wanted to.

It turns out that Oblivion with the “Nehrim” mod is a better Gothic than all of Gothic 1, 2, and 3 combined.
Seriously.

Oh wow I remember when TA-K first came out. Old man feeling in 3…2…1…
Fenris - it is good but unforgivingly, painfully difficult.
edit: from what I recall, the defensive towers were insanely overpowered.
Don’t do it, man. I loved TA, but Kingdoms was an awful game.
Actually? The biggest reason I’d get it is for the soundtrack. ;)
Haven’t you heard? Fenris doesn’t “do” difficult.

I never gave TA:K much of a chance, but I remember enough to say don’t get it just because it has the Total Annihilation name.

I don’t remember TA: K being overly difficult. It did some interesting things like force you to use land and air units together for visibility (the fog of war was kind of nasty). I do have vague memories of not liking it, or at least being unsatisfied at the time. I don’t recommend it.

TAK is inferior to TA in pretty much every way.
I liked the streamlined harvesting in Kingdoms. One resource, mana or something like it, and all you did was plant a node on it. I like that approach to the harvest/build/attack games. You get to focus much more on building and attacking, yet the resource nodes still matter.

TA:Kingdoms was the best RTS game to mod. All unit values were nested in extremely easily edited text files. Even better, these values had no deeper hidden calls, so you could basically make it all up. For example, under the [ARMOR TYPE] catagory (i don’t remember the exact names) you could just write whatever you wanted, say LIGHT MEDIUM HEAVY, ect. Then go under the damage type categories and fill in the new armor type and the percent damage reduction, then go fill in the armor type on which ever units you wanted to edit.
This is important because TA:Kingdoms had, perhaps, the worst unit balance i’ve ever encountered in an RTS. By my tastes it’s almost unplayable in it’s default state.

Well they did completely rebalance it in one of the late patches with CUT mode, which was less awful.
Oh. Sorry, I had no idea.

I can’t comment on the storyline of Nehrim, but I stopped playing after about 30 minutes because of the terrible Oblivion style combat.
How in the world did you manage to play G1 & G2? Seriously, compared to combat in those two games, Oblivion’s is a slice of perfection sprinkled with fat little cherubs of gameplay joy.
Combat in Gothic was very tactical and it genuinely rewarded clever play. You did have to adjust to the unusual control scheme though.
Guys, quick question. What are y’all’s opinions of the Postal games? I’ve always had a hankering to try 'em, but never did.

I can’t imagine that the Postal games have aged gracefully, even if they were half worth playing when they new.
