XIII was great fun, except the last boss was completely unbeatable for me without a trainer.
Great cliffhanger ending, though.
Oohhh, I’ve always wanted to give Realms of the Haunting a whirl. And it has the soundtrack. Eeeeeeeeeexcellent. :)
Good lord. Does it still have the painful control scheme?
I just read Bill Abner’s post about Darklands on nohighscores. I really wish GoG could spruce up a working version of this. I had convinced myself that I dreamed up the entire idea of this game and never actually played it until I saw Bill’s post.
I loved Realms of the Haunting, despite the switching-of-the disks (which may be reason enough for me to grab this now), and the weird controls (IIRC, I was able to bind a few of them, such as to WASD—I think?). But once I was adjusted, I got totally lost in the settings and atmosphere. Never finished it though. Got to Chapter 16 out of 20, and by then I was confused as to what I needed to do next, even after consulting a walkthrough.
I remember wondering who exactly did the level design and artwork, as a lot of effort went into both, and yet the game’s credits were vague on this.
RotH is the EU version, which didn’t have the improved controls and difficulty settings when it was released in the US. Surprised they used Gremlin’s version and not Interplay’s.
One thing this Gremlin/Interplay release tells me – and this is just me thinking out loud, mind you – is that we could possibly get [H]ardWar. I have this on disk, but a new distro to get fresh blood in would be lovely.
I would totally DIE if they got [H]ardWar. Looooooooooooooooooooove that game, would buy it day one even though I have the disks. They’d HAVE to keep the cutscenes in there somehow though.

So you’re saying that the GoG version still doesn’t have the improved controls and difficulty settings? I’ve always wanted to try this game but hearing that it might not be the best version out there is giving me pause.
Does it make you a sad panda?

Is South Park where the “sad panda” meme came from? As a fan, I’m surprised I missed that.
And yes, Hardwar was and is “the sh*t.”

Yes, it is. And I guarantee you I’ve never heard that one before! (Panda’s my real name too so I’ve extra-never-heard-that-one-before!)
Seeeeeeriously?
Indeed, or as the students in my girlfriend’s high school music classes like to say, “it’s the business”.

Wow, Realms of the Haunting is an instant purchase. In pre- GOG days you could only find that title at a steep price on Amazon or eBay. Not even the cough torrent sites had it available.
Realms of the Haunting is one of those ‘almost bought it’ games that I nearly picked up when it was new but I’m hesitant now when I hear the talk about unwieldy control schemes.
On an unrelated note, I’ve wondered why GoG hasn’t put up the original Witcher for sale yet, as an appetizer for the sequel. I’d probably buy it…again!

I’m still waiting for them to do that. I would buy the sequel from GOG, but then every time I went into my game shelf and saw I didn’t have the original, my OCD side would come out and never forgive me. If they put the original up, I’ll instantly buy both.

Yep! Before I joined, I thoroughly read Tom’s post about the forum’s style of conduct and saw how many others were using their real names so I decided to do the same. I just so happen to have a name that doubles as an internet handle. =P
So uh, as for Realms of the Haunting… what exactly were those control changes? And is the difficulty selection necessary, like the original game was too hard for a lot of folks?
Holy crap Realms!
What a game, instant buy! Damn I love this thread.

I actually found a copy of Realms of the Haunting one or two years ago (I had never played it). I loved what I saw of the game, but it was just far too buggy on my WinXP box. I can’t remember what the exact problems were, but it got to a point where I just couldn’t play it any more.
These were compatibility bugs… so now that it’s on GOG, I can’t wait to try it again.
I picked up King’s Bounty: The Legend during this weekend sale. I had, quite literally, bought it when it was released, walked out of the store reading the box, then returned it immediately when I saw that it was only supported on 32-bit OSes, fearing that there was some copy protection or other factor that would make it play poorly on 64-bit systems. While I don’t know if that’s been settled, I care a lot less about $5 than I do about the full price game and can deal with any issues, although GoG states that it works with Win7 x64.
Something different to play soon, at least.
