GOG has two unique selling points, besides the obvious.

No DRM - (In this case, you don’t have to rely on Steam to play the game)

Making the game work on modern systems (Something steam doesn’t really care about)

The end result may be the same in this particular case, but many would rather have their games from GOG than steam, if given the choice.

With close to 200 games on GoG.com I can safely say: Fuck you for trying to mock us non DRM people!

No DRM + sending a signal to Activision (Sierra) and Lucas Arts (don’t forget your past) is the main reason I bought every Sierra game from it + will buy every Lucasfilm / Lucas Arts game from there full price the day it comes out.
Money talks.

By the way I own every Sierra On-Line and Lucasfilm / Lucas Arts adventure game boxed already.
Also the whole classic Star Wars range of Lucasfilm / Lucas Arts.

What game made you go to the underworld?

Are there old games that Steam sells that don’t work? I’ve played the Lucasarts ones, XCom… all work fine. Which ones don’t, for my future information?

Aye, mostly windows xp games actually, and a few older games - they sell them “as is” - which is fine . They don’t claim they work on newer systems either. Thats what GOG does, which makes a difference.

Not at home right now, so can’t show you exactly what games do this as examples, but I’m sure you understand what I mean.

Many - including myself - have trouble running Dues Ex: Invisible War properly.

Though maybe that’s for the best.

I had lots of problems with Shattered Union and Freedom Force, in Windows 7.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines will run, but at an ultrafast speed. There is a fix for this one admittedly done by a member of the community and found via the forums, however, the point still stands, the release by way of Steam is not functioning properly. The game is nigh unplayable at the fast speeds.

Heh - try playing the first jedi knight games… or was it dark forces? Man that went fast! :-D

And if they come pre-tweaked, all the better. I just want my iMuse soundtrack.

Grim Fandango?

Commandos - Behind Enemy Lines

It’s CPU limited which means it runs far too fast these days.
The successor (Commandos - Beyond the Call of Duty) has a slider built-in to reduce the speed.

I could only make the GoG version work on any recent computer.
No idea what they did but it works perfectly on Windows 7 64 bit.

Ooops saw your reply too late.
By the way the GoG version works for whatever reason so major kudos for the wizards there.
The game is still a blast after all these years (played it through at the beginning of this year).

Doesn’t matter with LucasArts adventures because of ScummVM.

I have never played Grim Fandango. That would be excellent.

I played The Dig for the first time only a few months ago - that game was really awesome. I think it was different than a lot of other games of the time though.

The difference is on Steam is the publisher responsibility to make games work Valve only sells the games. On GOG they are more close to being the publisher they test the games they use DosBox for older games and some other tricks, so I’m more comfortable buying old games from GOG than from Steam. The LucasArts games were tested, re-purposed to run on modern system by LucasArts before going to Steam but that it’s not true for all games.

“What game made you go to the Underworld”

this, except I bought Outlaws on ebay year ago for a lot of money…still I would buy it again from GOG. Brilliant game, only bested by Red Dead Redemption :)

Holy shit if it is EA AND Lucasarts I will jizz in my pants.

Now try to get the soundtrack (the original CD not the mp3s). :)

The soundtrack is in CD-Audio form on CD1 of the original game, so no need :P

I still ocasionally listen to it, have it mp3ed. It is incredible.

edit - ah, Anna’s Theme…
