I think Kurina just nailed it.
But Outlaws is LucasArts, right?
Then what would the stars have anything to do with EA? Wing Commander?
But Outlaws was LucasArts right?
Could “outlaws” also mean Privateers? ;)

Since DOSBox is being discussed a little, I have a serious question about it. While I love all things GoG and think what they’re trying to do is utterly fantastic, I just cannot get any of their games that run on DOSBox to work at acceptabe speeds. I’ve never seen anyone talk about this, so I’m starting to wonder if it’s just me… somehow.
Basically, all games I run in DOSBox perform poorly on my system. I have a modern 2.5 GHz quad core machine so I don’t think procesisng power is the issue. The problem is that I cannot strike a balance between the audio playing smoothly without pops and clicks and latency in the emulator’s rendering. I was hoping the GoG releases would be tweaked to run just right, but at their default settings they still run like all the games I’ve tried on DOSBox since before GoG existed.
For example, I tried two different games with pretty disparate system requirements to see if I could get either one running both smoothly and playably. I picked Xargon and Crusader: No Regret because the former is a VGA platformer and the latter is an SVGA CD action game with movies and stuff. I assumed Xargon would run perfectly and Crusader would croak but after messing with the settings for each of them the end result was the same – smooth gameplay and stuttering audio, or smooth audio and laggy gameplay.
So what I’m asking is whether there’s some magical setting everyone uses that I don’t know about or if everyone’s just playing with laggy-ass controls or glitchy audio and doesn’t notice or care or something. Have people really gotten DOSBox running with good audio and very low latency or is this really how they expect us to play these older titles?

Right, but that clue doesn’t necessarily mean it is Outlaws for sure.
Panda, I usually use…I think CTRL + F12 to increase the CPU cycles until it’s at a good speed.
I’ve seen speculation that “riding with the outlaws” could be Road Rash.

Just to keep the confusion going, in regards to the outlaws clue, the text for it was written with a “Wild West” style font. that is why the LucasArts theory seemed so plausible at the time, as it matched their Outlaws game. Now though, who knows. At this point I just want to dream and pretend it is both LucasArts and EA, but I am sure that is pushing things a bit much. Definitely antsy for the announcement tomorrow!
Audio’s the rough part. Brian mentioned TIE Fighter and DOSBox earlier, and it is a bear to get the iMuse system working right in DOSBox. It basically boils down to your cycles setting. You have find the sweet spot where the game is playing at the smoothest you can get without blowing the sound up. I’ve also found that messing around with display settings – switching from surface, to D3D, to overlay, etc. – can affect this. Finally, for some games, even playing around with the CPU settings (dynamic to normal, etc.) is required.
It’s all about tweaking and understanding that some games are pretty much install and go while others are going to have you sweat over the config file.
If it’s Dungeon Keeper, I’m going to grow a penis specifically for the purpose of jizzing in my pants.
Even though I have one, QFMFT.
I’m certain somebody here would be glad to float you a loaner, so you don’t have to pay anything.

It’s not as nice as it sounds. It gets pretty sticky.

Yeah, but I’m a known drunk, and the owner could theoretically find their penis lying on a blanket on 2nd avenue next to a broken toaster oven.
You act like the potential loaner hasn’t already experienced that on his own. I’d call it likely, to be honest.
Glad someone else knows of King Missile.

Yeah, and if you increase the cycles either the performance won’t change and the controls will be laggy, or the game will run better and it will still be laggy. The only way to make the controls less laggy is to edit the millisecond delay of the audio engine in the configuration file, but then all you do is make the audio skip around. It’s like you just can’t win, and I can’t imagine gamers buying these things and not making a huge stink about how laggy the control is. So I’m left to assume that it must work well for most people.
Edit: “Detatchable peeeeeeeniiiis… Detachable peeeeeniiiiiis…”
I have little to no problems with GoG games. That is why I buy them from to time. HoMMIII for instance needed a driver update, but now all works fine.
