Today’s release is all chapters of Heroes Chronicles, which I never got around to buying when they were out, but am totally doing so today to complete my Heroes of Might and Magic collection.

Why didn’t you guys tell me Crusader was out now? Totally buying that.

And why isn’t Alien Crossfire included in the SMAC release, GOG? You can’t expect me to dig up my CD after all these years!

As someone who really enjoyed Freelancer, would Freespace 2 be a good buy? Also consider that I’d be playing with the M&Kb since I don’t have a stick.

I played with M&K. Might not be ideal, but was fine IMO. Probably a must buy if you’re prepared to install some of the enhancements in this thread…

Awesome. I’m definitely getting that eventually when I get more time. Maybe after I’m done watching The Wire.

Originally I thought the cost for new campaigns like this was too high. But 9.99 for all of them? Sounds about right.

Now there’s a series I’d like to see on GOG. Probably never happen due to licensing, but still.

Weren’t the Heroes Chronicles just chopped up parts of Heroes III?

Just noticed that Die By The Sword is on promo at $2.99. If anybody hasn’t played this it’s well worth picking up just to get a glimpse of one possible, and quite satisfying way, of solving melee combat. Shame this wasn’t pursued further.

If anybody’s familiar with Duke Patrick and his realistic combat mods for Oblivion, DBTS was one of his favourite games prior to Oblivion. He thought it was the closest approach, in any game up to then, to a “realistic” feeling combat that’s also gamey game fun. (He’s a modder who’s also a SCA enthusiast - not that the SCA combat style is necessarily the acme of authenticity, but at least he’s a modder who’s also had extensive experience bashing people with swords, etc.)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the way combat works in Mount & Blade? I remember Die by the sword, and it was damn fun

Die By the Sword was incredible fun. But I had the best time with it with a joystick. I didn’t like the implementation on the mouse. It was basically the same idea, of the sword having one to one movement with your movement, but the joystick re-centered automatically, while you had to that yourself with the mouse all the time, and that made a big difference to me.

I had no idea that modders were trying to implement the DBTS system in other games. It’s definitely the best implementation of sword combat I’ve ever played.

Nope. 8 all new, original campaigns, though I don’t think they introduce any new assets.

There were a lot of cool things going on in Starshatter, but sadly it seems to be abandonware now. There was even a texture update at some point. I don’t think you can even buy it anymore.

Even at $9.99, you’re paying too much for 8 additional Heroes campaigns. They weren’t very good. There’s no new units or buildings. Better to stay with Heroes III complete, which at least has a random map generator.

Right? I loooooooove the SFC games so much.

Keep in mind that they’re quite different animals, really. Freelancer was built from the ground up to be flown with a mouse. Freelancer is also more of an action RPG wherein your avatar happens to be a spaceship. Freespace 2 can be flown effectively with a mouse and keyboard, but it’s much more intense than Freelancer and there are a lot more buttons to manage things like targeting, power control, communications and the like.

I disagree. I thought these campaigns were well done, challenging and fun to play through. They have a pretty decent story to go along with the great HoMMIII gameplay. At basically $1.00 per campaign, I don’t see how this is a bad buy. I guess you could wait for the inevitable sale and get it for 50% off, but it’s worth it at $9.99 to me.

Is HOMM3 the best one?

Some would disagree and say 2 is the best one, but the general consensus is that 3 is the best one.

I guess I gotta get one of them, one of these days…

I say get 1-3 because they’re all awesome in their own way. 4 is questionable. 3, IMO, has the best story along with one of the best random map generators in the business (maybe only outdone by the Kohan games), so there’s a TON of gameplay there. 3 also has an excellent soundtrack that’s only slightly not as good as 2’s in some way’s due to the operatic nature of it.

The mighty Brian Rubin has spoken.

I always pay attention to your posts. So, 3 it is. :)
