Woot, finally! :D I will be snagging this tonight!

It better be good, it just better be good!!!

Disappointed that Populous is not being bundled with Populous II.

If GoG does get Populous II, I’d recommend picking it up over the original. It’s a better game.

Wait… FREE??? Did I miss something?

That’s awesome!

Ultima IV’s been free on and off for … a while.

I remember buying a copy of PC Games magazine which came packed with a copy of Ultima IV on the demo disc and that was maybe 94? 95?

Ultima IV is 25 MB. I downloaded so fast I missed it and had to check my recent downloads. Heck, the manual is 10MB.

I really wish GoG would offer an alternate zip file download for their dos box games so they would be easier to use on a Mac. It is annoying having to fire up a VM just to extract the files.

25MB? Why, in my day, we got our Ultima IVs on 90kB floppy disks, each bit transferred one at a time. And you had to swap disks coming and going to town! Kids these days…

I’m kind of amused by this blurb on the page: “A revolutionary title with a story so deep and complex that that it should be taught in schools.” U4 is certainly revolutionary, but there isn’t really that much story to it beyond “Go forth and become awesome! You’re awesome enough to get the Codex now? Awesome!” U5 through U7 were way more developed in the story department.

Edit: And oh yeah, the third blurb is a bit off too, Sosaria was the previous land and as of U4 it’s Britannia now.

I think most people would find XU4 (http://xu4.sourceforge.net) to be a better Ultima IV than Ultima IV. Same game, essentially, just wrapped in a better interface/engine.

I’m sure you think you are being very clever, but it is more a question of why is GoG leaving money on the table for people who use OSX or Linux and don’t want to jump through hoops.

Hey, don’t insult me by sayin’ I think.

As for your query, I honestly doubt the market share is there to support the effort entailed.

Mac has a very nice DOSBox wrapper in the form of Boxer.

I may have to give this a shot. I played Ultima IV on a C-64. The music was a big part of the atmosphere. The PC version doesn’t seem to have music, unless I’m missing something. Does the sourceforge version have the music?

Effort? It is posting what you already have as a zip file rather than exe.

As for being worth it, yeah, people who use linux or apple products definitely never spend money on games.

It wouldn’t be much technical effort, but I could see them potentially balking at the support effort needed, if they don’t have much Mac expertise on-staff already. It could be kind of a chicken-and-egg thing where they don’t want to spend money on hiring Mac support staff without a solid business case, but they can’t prove the business case without doing some sales and collecting data, but they can’t do that without some Mac support staff…

Yep, you basically get the ‘mockingboard’ quality music, which was state-of-the-art in 1985.

Oh man that’s great news. I MISS that game. That’s one I’d LOVE to see get a remake with a graphical overhaul, and like…NO other changes.

I post wantonly. Ignore me!

Those aren’t real aliens. They’re just polygons directed to move in a fashion similar to aliens. The game is a sham.
