Steam Daily Deal for September 1st is Alien Shooter for the princely sum of $1.66 (67% off). It appears that one does indeed shoot aliens in this game.
2011 Bargain Thread ----------> that way
This is the thread where we bitch about GoG charging $6 for Populous 1.
Dang, that’s twice in as many days now. I promise to look before I post next time!
The first step is admitting you have a drinking problem.
But doesn’t work on x64 OS, it seems.
I get the “version of the file is not compatable with the version of windows you are running” message. I tried some compatability settings for fun and no good.
There’s a dude on the GoG forums claiming he got UX4 working on Win 7 x64, but he’s probably a lying liar.
I’m surprised they want that much for Populous 1. But people seemed to want it desperately, so they must feel like they can get away with charging that much for it. I’m sure it will be a deep-discount deal for a weekend before much longer.
GOG has two standard prices, $6 and $10. Populous has been set at the cheap one. But yes, sooner or later it’ll show up at half price, if you don’t mind waiting.
The graphics look so…crappy. Even for GOG. Did I actually play that game?!
lesslucid – indeed, but I think the game is old enough they could have bundled 1 + 2 for a $6 and it would have been a steal. Charging $6 for a 20-year-old game is a little much, IMO. But it’s also not a game I was chomping at the bit for. If this was a QfG game, I’d buy it for the $10 price in a heartbeat. :)

Like Creole Ned said earlier, they really should have bundled it with Populous 2. Populous was great when it was released in 1989, but today it’s not worth $6 (or even half that on bargain), in my opinion.
Sadly they likely didn’t have a choice, as EA likely strong armed 'em into prices such as $6 for Populous. Sigh.
So I’m stuck in Ultima 2. I’m near Port Linda with very little in the way of HP. But I can’t figure out how to create a new character (I keep getting “disk full” messages or something when I do it). I don’t recall this being an issue on the Ultimate Ultima Collection version of U2. I Could reinstall, but that’s mildly annoying.

We’re discussing a $6 game as ‘too expensive’? Really? It’s exactly the same game as it was when last patched. Is somehow $3 a significantly better price? I realize though that it is easy to get lost in the minutiae of pricing. I do it myself sometimes.
It really depends on the value of the game. Looks like some folks don’t see Populous being work $6 on its own. shrug

My point is that at any point under $6, I don’t see the real difference. So I can save $3 if it goes half price. What other game will I buy with that $3 (if you want to constrain the value to games)? Nothing. Whereas if a game is $40 and then goes on sale for $6, then I can buy several games for the difference.

The thing about GOG is that they rarely put just one game on sale at a time. This weekend, for example, there are six games on sale at half price. You can save $20 if you were to buy them all, but let’s assume you only want two. Now you’ve saved (at least) $6, which is another game at full price.
Individually, the sales don’t make a big difference. GOG understands that, and so they tend to price in such a way as to incentivize bulk purchases and provide more tangible savings for the customer.
As it relates to the pricing of a single game like Populous, though, I agree that a minute difference in pricing from its current level would have zero impact on my plans to purchase it one way or another.

Well, most games on GOG seem to eventually go on sale for about half price, so you could get one of those for $3. Still, in my opinion, $3 is $3 (and it’s not a trivial amount to everybody) and populous is not worth that much. Then again, I don’t think I’d buy Populous at any price, since I have no desire to play it again.
Eh, it’s like $1.50 is ok for a coke at McDonald’s but $3.50 would be way too much. You’re thirsty, you like Coke, but damn you’re not paying that much for one.
My respite is patience. I know at some point most GOG games will go on sale at half price.

The real Ultima 2 saved your character right on the game floppy disk, and I don’t remember it allowing more than one character. I think you have to delete the old one first from the setup screen. I’m going on 20+ year old memories though, so I don’t remember the details exactly. Something about renewing/formatting/clearing the player disk.
