I did really like some things in the story, now that I’m thinking about it. Actually, I’ll probably pick it up if I ever finish my Ur-Quan Masters playthrough.

Star Control 3 spoiler

When the Arilou revealed their true intentions for humanity and you had to fight them off, at the end of the game, I thought that was a good payoff.

I will never forgive it for its treatment of the Orz.

Anyone had trouble getting the music to work in Nox?

Also, I dug up the CDs for this after I spotted in on GOG. What the hell is the 2nd CD for?

I seem to recall that it had something to do with multiplayer, but I don’t seem to own the game anymore. Must have traded it in back in the day. I didn’t really care for it.

Yeah, I have the original CDs as well. CD 2 is for multiplayer but I never used it.

I only played a wee bit of SC3, but it left a very bad impression. It actually re-used jokes from 2 in the dialogue. The new ships were generally pretty bad as well, with a couple of exceptions.

Looks like they may try going to greater lengths to make more problematic games work…

SC3 had really bad claymation stop-motion FMV.

My wife is playing Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. Is there a way to speed things up, for those times when you want time to move a bit faster, rather than just waiting? The usual plus and bracket keys don’t seem to work.

No speed control, unfortunately.

That’s an odd oversight. Oh well. I guess she can keep walking away and letting it play itself for a while.

New game, Operation Flashpoint + Resistance

Well, it’s actually more like they’re just putting OpFlash up again (probably minus Red Hammer this time). I’m still glad to see it up there again, but it’s also on every other digital distributor on the face of the planet as well so it’s a bit less special now. Doesn’t make it any less of a gem, though.

Oh, i didn’t know it was in gog before.

Do you have any idea how well it holds-up?

Did it have the soundtrack last time? I don’t recall it having a soundtrack, or I would’ve purchased it back when it was OpFlash.

Doesn’t look like it, it’s not among my archived extras from the original. On the other hand, the original release had wallpapers which aren’t part of the new one, but that’s not a particularly big loss.

It’s not mechanically as fleshed-out as the more recent Arma games, but I almost feel it’s worth playing just for the Resistance campaign alone. It allows you to wage a semi-persistent rebellion against the Soviets where you have to scrounge up weapons, ammunition and vehicles that carry over from mission to mission to fight your war. The tension you can get from having to scavenge a battlefield before Soviet reinforcements arrive is an experience you can’t really get anywhere else.

It’s also ridiculously tough at times for obvious reasons, but if you want a straightforward and simple experience then you can choose the original campaign or the single missions (some of which are extremely lengthy). It also comes with the typical mission customization tools that let you lay out whatever mission you want down to the last rifleman. There’s a lot of potential gameplay in there for the price, but if you don’t find Arma even remotely appealing then I find it hard to recommend this one since (once I pull off my nostalgia goggles) it’s just a more primitive version of the game.

It will run on pretty much any computer ever, though, which is more than can be said of Arma.

From a single player perspective, it’s still the best Bohemia game.
It’s epic story of defeat and victory, with drama and thrilling moments, long (40 missions in the original campaign?), varied (grunt soldier, squad leader, tank commander, helicopter pilot, stealth ops, defense, attack, ambush, recon missions, etc), and with decent characterization and development of the war.
I love the vision of being a grunt soldier in a near-URSS island in the Cold War era which are attacked by the red army and they don’t even know what is happening, but it seems they are looking at the start of WW3 from the first row.

I played the original campaign recently. It wasn’t quite compelling enough to put up with the checkpoint saves. I cheated past a few missions I didn’t feel like retrying multiple times. I’m sure back in the day I would’ve loved to play each mission legitimately. I did finish the campaign though.

On a related note, I played a few missions in Dragon Rising on Gametap and it’s not quite compelling enough to put up with checkpoints either. As soon as I die twice and restart in the same place, my mind wanders to all the other games I could be playing. I’m quitting that one.

Your mileage may vary on both games.
