Finally I think I’ll pick up Lords of Magic again. Haven’t played it in years.

Which is the Empire Earth to get? The second one?

I think if you want an EE, get the first one. I got the second one, and it felt pretty lifeless yet overwhelming and hectic. At launch it also had awful, awful bugs – the tutorial was unwinnable because your units couldn’t cross a bridge. I’m sure it’s been fixed since then, but I never got back into it.

Honestly, don’t bother (with Empire Earth). Get Rise of Nations. Better in every single way.

I so wish RoN was on GoG.

I’m sure you already have a disc version, but as a general service announcement, RON:Gold is $9 on Amazon. It’s one of the best deals in strategy gaming.

Yeah, Rise of Nations is much better. While there, get Rise of Legends, too!

Wasn’t Lords of the Realm 2 the sweet spot? The first one didn’t do much for me and the third one lost whatever the second had I felt.

I remember correctly.

Yeah, LoTR2 is the best in the series, no question.

I remember loving that game too.

I loved Evil Genius. Am I alone in here?

No. It’s awesome.

Never played it, I hear it’s fun though.

Another vote for Rise of Nations over Empire Earth. That $9 Amazon deal for Gold includes Thrones and Patriots, the expansion to RoN that makes the core gameplay even better.

Back to GoG : $6 is a steal for all the Lords of the Realm goodness. The Royal Edition contains both Lords of the Realm I and II plus the siege pack for II, making it essentially $1 for each piece. Lords of the Realm 3 took the series in a different direction that fans of II were not happy with, but it’s still a fun game in it’s own right and worth $3 if you like these types of games.

Since nobody can talk about Rise of Nations without drawing me in, it’s a very serious candidate for my personal game of the decade, and it is definitely better than any entry in the Empire Earth franchise in every way.

I would allow that EE1 is worth playing if you’re curious, since it’s like a primitive 3D Age of Empires game with 14 ages (15 with the expansion). Not many games let you use mechs to obliterate hoplites or to destroy a Frankish knight charge with attack helicopters.

So about Empire Earth… I’m incredibly disappointed with AOEO… so I gathered from here and other comments that EE3 is totally not worth it… but is EE2 that much worse than EE1? Is EE2 at least mildly redeemable? It seems it has decent depth and complexity.

Argh, people posted about it while I posted here. I had RoN when it first came out and played it to death, so Im interested in EE as another take on RTS… so Im curious about EE2.

My kid, at this very moment, is playing Rise of Nations on his PC. Love the game. FYI for those who don’t have it - you can get the gold edition on Amazon for <$10. There’s no disc check, and it has a self-updater. GoG would still be an ideal place for it, so here’s hoping it makes it there.

? Mine checks for the disc.

Yeah, I’ll fourth or fifth this, or whatever number we’re up to now.

I enjoyed it, flawed but very fun. I wished that they had a chance to make a sequel to fine tune it.

Also I’ll submit my vote for how great Rise of Nations was.
