This Broken Sword free game is very weird. Voice over quality seems all over the place, and the story goes from being serious to goofy quite a lot.

Ground Control is excellent. Hard as a bastard though.

As does mine. I loaded it recently onto my netbook using an external CD drive, but then realized I couldn’t play it without that drive because of the disc check.
Which is why a GOG version would be nice.
Rise of Nations is so much better than Empire Earth, they barely deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence.

Rise of Nations is such a wonderful game, one of my favorites for playing against the wife. It’s one of those rare gems that no one ever seems to have any complaints about.
What it needs now is a graphical update, while everything else stays just about exactly the same, à la Starcraft 2, and Sid Meier’s Pirates!.
On the contrary, Rise of Nations still looks surprisingly good – probably the best-looking 2D game that was ever made. A 3D update wouldn’t easily match the sheer visual detail of the pre-rendered sprites and backgrounds.
My version doesn’t have a disk check, by the way, or any other DRM. That was a repackaged & republished edition, though – I assume that Amazon edition is the original one?
Which version did you guys purchase? Mine is the “classics”/“exclusives” (I forget the terminology) package with the blue background. No hack involved (I don’t do no-cd “patches”).
EDIT: Ahhhh, here it is - this version is a couple bucks more, but no check involved. http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Nations-Gold-PC/dp/B0002ZO2UW/ref=sr_1_8?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1317472787&sr=1-8
EDIT 2: The above posting should not be taken as an assertion that GoG shouldn’t get RoN. I’d rather I had it through them than a physical disc.
Nor do I. Anyone happen to know if the final official patch removed the CD-check?

Link no work. How can you tell that version doesn’t have a disc check?
Sorry to continue this no-GOG derail.

It had an extra http in it. Try this.
I played Lords of Magic when it first came out and didn’t like it. I REALLY wanted it to be the next MoM, but the realtime battles turned me off completely. I think, though, that my assumption about what it should be may have kept me from enjoying what it is. So someone sell it to me…for 3 bucks, or whatever!

If you do anything, go to Keith Zizza’s website and download the soundtrack for it, free

The 2.0 patch had an apology note from the developers and made massive changes to the game (is my understanding). Still real-time battles though.
Hahahaha holy crap. That was the first D&D module I ever played.

Yea, it was so substantial that they even re-released the game as Lords of Magic: Special Edition. The 'Special" being that it came patched, and had a small quest pack included.
Thankfully, this is the version at GoG. Just remember, it’s not supposed to be so much of a pure MoM rip-off as a combination of MoM and Lords of the Realm.

I thought there was some HoMM in there too.

I never played HoMM until recently, so I have no idea.
Yay soundtracks! Thanks for the tip!

Yea, that’s the place. I own all three collections listed there (2 of 3 were free), and when I play a game that has a shitty soundtrack I will mute music and play my own in the background. Just about every fantasy 4x or RPG game can be improved with the Lords of Magic soundtrack!
The actual album he has listed there “Memories of a Forgotten Age” sounds like straight up orchestral synth/new age/fantasy video game music, and fits in well with tons of games. It even works good as background music, if you want your life to have that certain epic feeling to it.
I downloaded all the Lords of Magic music from there many many years ago (after losing my discs), but I remember one of the links not working for one of the tracks, so I had to go to youtube and rip it from there. It’s worth having them all, as the whole LoM collection is only like 25 minutes long.
Not surprising. It was the module that came with the basic set and was meant to serve as an introduction to the game. It’s not a great module, though, IMO. I did find the rumor chart cool though as a kid, since it included all sorts of false rumors and you didn’t know what you were getting.
GOG hits a homerun this week.
SimCity 2000 Special Edition, $5.99.
